I rarely write reviews but I am doing this one so Mr. Goltz will hopefully improve his instruction to emphasize safety and to help other parents. This is not a place for kids who are completely new to judo or self defense classes. When my kids were in the class, they both got injured due to the lack of proper instruction and safety. Once you are in the class, there is no separation for beginners, intermediate or advanced. Everyone is expected to do the same thing on their first day. Due to lack of supervision and proper instruction, one of my kids injured her neck and was taken to ER. We also noticed advanced students were paired up beginner students while and larger students were paired with smaller students. As a result my other kid also got hurt. When this was brought up to one of the instructors (not Mr. Goltz), the instructor just scolded my child. read more

Best judo club I have been a part of. The senseis are knowledgeable friendly and the club is a family.

Goltz Judo has been a great place for my kids for the last couple of years. Unlike other sports or activities that come and go, they enjoy the classes, the friendships, the lessons thru the years. Sensei Gary is passionate about teaching the sport and making it a memorable experience. read more

Gary Goltz was nice enough to invite my family to Claremont to visit his Judo Dojo. We have know him for quite a few years as my kids have progressed through Judo. Gary Sensei is an 8th degree Black belt and when you go to his clinic, he always has some awesome stories/anecdotes about his Judo adventures. Ask him about Tiger rolls and the actor Jack Black! Gary Sensei has many accolades during his career. Not only was he induced into the USJA hall of fame, but served USJA as COO for like years and president for 5 years or more. He is currently the president of the Nanka Yudanshakai. There as so many more, but you get the idea. It is obvious his love for judo and his community. With my 5 kids visiting, Gary Sensei lead the second class. The kids really enjoyed his teaching style. He took the time to correct the kids stances and Uchi-komis. He had a ton Of complements for my kids. read more

Where do I begin with Goltz Judo. My son started here at the age of six ('04). He took to it very well. As a mom, I myself joined shortly thereafter. I must say, we have nothing but great memories of this awesome dojo! Goltz Judo teaches discipline, respect, how to roll and slap the mat, and how to throw an opponent while using maximum efficiency with minimum effort. My oldest son recently went back to Goltz Judo, and it was nice seeing the same faces teach the exact same way years ago. This dojo has always remained consistent. The fee itself to come here and learn Judo with exceptional Sensei's is yet anoher reason why this place is amazing. It's unbeatable! If you are looking for a dojo who treats you like family, who teaches you the history of Judo and how to perfect your techniques and most importantly how to be safe while on the mat, then I 100% recommend coming here. read more

This is an traditional Judo Dojo. This means they are not in business to make up diplomas, sell colorful belts, make a new style of martial arts, or profit from your registration. No-one has a "natural talent" for Judo because everyone discovers that while they might have a technique or two that comes easily, there are plenty of other weakness and skills to work on! Each person encounters their own challenges, and is taught the tricks on how to do the moves so they work. The club nurtures the traditional mind-body discipline that martial arts are supposed to be. When you show-up, a dedicated team of kind and entertaining sensei instructors will teach all levels of grappling, throws, fights, physical fitness including mental integrity. All sizes, ages of students, are welcome. And for you ladies - where else can women wrestle? Participants will be sweaty - and proud of themselves. The instructors are superb, and the price is right. I highly recommend the experience of a work-out on a judo mat. Go for it! read more

Outstanding place to learn judo. Great for kids. Great for families. Great for anyone that wants to learn the sport. They have numerous programs to meet the needs of beginners all the way up to world class competitors. Along with several "friendlies" (scrimmages) they host the USJA/USJF Winter Nationals each December. Well, worth checking out. The spinoff clubs Discover Judo (in Rancho Cucamonga), Industry Sheriff's (In Industry) & Empire Judo (Fontana) are also well worth of a look. read more

This is probably an okay place to practice judo if you have some experience. However, if you are like me and lack martial arts experience and/or are not in great shape, then be warned; you could be seriously injured! I attended classes here for about two weeks before I severely injured my shoulder. I haven't been back since. That was over three months ago and my shoulder still isn't fully recovered. I'm not sure if it ever will be the same. My injury could've been avoided, but they spent about forty-five minutes "teaching" me the basics before throwing me in with the rest of the class where the skill level ranges from beginner to over-zealous-relatively-experienced. After my initial lesson, I was never separated from the rest of the class and this is how I injured my shoulder. We were warming up, which involved doing falling rolls on the mats. Well I was doing them incorrectly and tweaked my shoulder. No one corrected my form because no one paid attention to what the new guy was doing. Later that night I was doing randori with another student who is very enthusiastic. He sent me for a throw, I landed on my tweaked shoulder, I heard a snap, and just like that I was in the worst pain of my life. The older guys tried telling me that I "should've taken the fall" as if I knew what that meant. I had just spent money on the class, gi, and a book outlining moves for advancement. So I spent quite a bit of money on this place and you'd think that they'd show some level of concern for my well-being if for no other reason than the fact that I was a paying customer. I haven't heard a peep out of anyone since I hobbled out of the community center that night, save for the mass e-mailing list, which I had to request to be taken off of. Bottom line: you get what you pay for. read more

Gary Goltz is very informative and loves what he does. The Judo club I used to teach at faced against Goltz Judo last June and they were so professional, respectful, and welcoming. When I moved away from my old Judo Club I immediately enrolled into Goltz Judo. read more

My daughter joined the Olympic Judo class in September 2006. I was impressed by the high quality of instruction, the low instructor-to-student ratio, the number of female students in the class, and the sense of camaraderie in the club. My daughter still thinks it's just good fun. At $75 per quarter for one-hour lessons three times a week, the class is not only an excellent bargain, but a tremendous value as well. We highly recommend it! read more

Goltz Judo Club has exceptional instruction that can be compared to any other judo club. With various degrees of experience, there is something for everyone here. There are many aspects in joining. Learning traditional judo, getting a great cardiovascular workout, learning self-defense, and meeting new friends to name a few. Safety is always a priority and members choose what level they wish to participate in. All in all, Goltz Judo Club is a friendly environment that welcomes everyone. read more

My previous review is included below. I started at Goltz Judo when I was 42 after watching my young kids do judo for a year or so. Since then I have pretty much become a judo addict and have earned my black belt. (I wil be 45 in July). Not everyone will want to spend as much time on judo as I do, but there is something for everyone in this club. Yelp's automatic filter periodically removes my review, but I am just a member of the club and do not earn any pay from the club or get any reward for writing this review. I just love playing judo and helping other people learn it. If you try it out, you are going to meet a lot of people who feel the same way. Come give the club a try and good luck! Here is my old review which I still think is useful. The prices may have gone up by 5 or 10 bucks. ------------------------------------- For $75 plus $35 for a judo gi your 6-12 year old gets a 13 week session with 3 classes per week. The instructors are experts who are patient, effective and who are giving their time this way because they love practicing and teaching judo. They are all about helping kids improve themselves. The "tiny tots" (3-6 years) classes are also excellent and run by amazingly patient and effective teachers. The approach in "tiny tots" is more playful and gradual, but over the course of a session or two, the youngsters really start to become judo players. For both age groups, Judo helps kids become rugged and confident. There is also emphasis on sportsmanship and courtesy which is evident in the demeanor of all the kids at this dojo. After watching my kids at Goltz Judo Club for about a year, I started the adult class (at age 42) and dropped about 20 pounds in 5 months. The classes can be tough and there are some aches and pains involved, but overall I feel better than I have in years. Judo is certainly one of the funnest sports I have played. I highly recommend Goltz Judo Club. read more

Im 51 years old, and just started taking judo lesson about 4 months ago. The instruction in nothing but high quality. Senseis Gary, Oj and Brad wants you to learn and have high expectations for their students and it shows, we are the best judo club in the US. The black belts are always teaching, training, doing randori, ground fighting. Come to the club and see for yourself, and if you are up to the challenge take some lessons. you'll have no regrets. I truly highly recommend Goltz Judo Club read more

My son has been with Goltz going on four years. It is a well priced (80% less than the karate classes I considered) and run by mature experienced sensis including the president of the American Judo Association and a former US Olympic judo team alternate. I like that you don't pay for belt advancements either - you earn them. read more

I started my association with Goltz Judo over 10 years ago. I was looking for a physical education class to complement the PE portion for my kids home schooling program. My son took the first class, he was 13. My daughter who was 12 watched. After class was over, my son's face was beaming and my daughter would not stop asking me to sign her up. We discovered a lot deeper program than just PE. Sensei Gary Goltz and the other instructors teach Judo as a Martial Art, as a sport, as a fun activity and also as a philosophy for life. A year or so after my kids started doing Judo and I was no longer able to handle my son as we wrestled at home (he put some wicked chokes and arm bars on me), I decided to join. All 3 of us are black belts now, we learn, teach and love our Goltz family. I recommend Goltz Judo for anyone and especially for those home schoolers who are looking for extra activities for their kids. You won't find a better deal anywhere both price and quality. I am extremely proud to be part of this group. read more
