In my case, it was easier to pick my board up at the store and the exchange was flawless. Marty was busy at the times when i was at the shop, but he is friendly and personable regardless. Dude sounds like he has surfed all over the world, so i bet he is a great resource for planning your surf experience in France, but we had an agenda already. For the good quality board you get, the price of the rental is reasonable. I rented a ding-free 5-9 Firewire GoFish for a clean 3-4 foot (Hawaiian scale) swell. It was just a little bit surprising to have to pay for a bar of wax, but everyone has to make a living, so it is what it is. I do believe that if you are a serious surfer, for a hi-quality surf location like Biarritz/Hossegor you should bring your own gear, but Marty's selection allows for most people to get something close to what they would ride on their similar home breaks. Our trip involved different agendas and multiple stops in Europe and USA, so we could not travel with boards, and we are thankful that Marty's Surf Shop exists. FYI the shop is an easy straight shot 5-10 min town drive south from Cote de Basques.

The water was a bit cold and the weather was kind of cool while I was visiting, so many of the surfers had wet suits. There are stations for lifeguards and first aid that are open based on the season and a set schedule. Many restaurants, cafes and shops are located right across the beach.

And it's a really nice place to just chill and watch surfers surf! There are designated areas when people can go in the water and play. The lifeguards try and ensure that people aren't getting too close to the high waves and surfers. In terms of the surf, the waves are pretty decent. You'll usually come across knee high to waist high waves (at least that's what is was when I was there). This is a great place for beginner/intermediate surfers to improve their skill level! Beware though, the waves come in very quickly, one after the other. This made me a little exhausted because every time I surfed a wave, it would take me a while to get back to the "safe spot" or the break (I am not the strongest swimmer or most skilled surfer). You'll see many of the more skilled surfers drop out of a wave to avoid coming to close to the shore, if this makes sense. For the 1st timers, if you stay near the left side of the beach, the waves are ankle to knee high! Great place to learn, you'll see all the surf schools out here too!

Xabier was responsive and easy to deal with via email, and the instructor they assigned was wonderful, according to my family--very nice, generous with his time, and spoke English. Can't recommend them enough, as good as it gets!
