We were not disappointed. In fact, it was really awesome. We had a hard time choosing our entrees, because the menu is quite large, offering pasta dishes (pasta made on premises), meat, fish as well as the obligatory pizza. Note: my meal was ordered from their daily handwritten menu board. We shared a bruschetta, which was nicely garlicky with tomatoes that had a great taste. This was followed by a simple green salad with a light oil/vinegar dressing and freshly baked bread (part of the meal). For entrees, the hubby had Saltimbocca alla Romana - and he loved it. And he knows his Saltimbocca. I ordered a Seezunge (sole) in a white wine sauce with potatoes and seasonal veg. My fish was heavenly! The waiter even offered to filet it for me, but I managed just fine. After our great meal, we couldn't pass up dessert - Panna Cotta, which was also very creamy and yummy. Our dinner was rounded out with a dry Verdicchio (white Italian wine) and expresso. Including tip, our meal was 80€. Definitely will do dinner here again, rather than just a quick lunch outside. We were at the Altes Forstamt for dinner last August, and were seated outside in the lovely patio area, which overlooks a peaceful little square beside the moated Kirchheim Palace. The ambiance both outside and inside the resto is very very nice, and the menu is a bit more sophisticated then the usual boring south German fare of dishes overloaded with gravy. Both our fish and beef orders were nicely prepared and presented. The service was very good, even though the timing felt a bit rushed - we barely had time to finish our pre-dinner drinks before our first course arrived. But this seems on par with other German restaurants. We likely visit again.

From the street (see photos), it looks very inviting with a lovely wrought iron gate and fence covered in greenery. Also from the street, there is an amazing scent of .. well, meat. As my husband calls it 'dead animals on the grill'. The restaurant has a large outdoor area with lots of mature trees that provide great dappled shade and has both Bavarian-style picnic tables, as well as cute little tables and chairs. To our mouthwatering delight, there was a suckling pig roasting on an open rotisserie. There were many other Bavarian beer garden type of food choices, but we both went with the suckling pig. I had it with rye bread and hubby with fries. And of course, I had beer. The hubby seemed quite happy with his order, but I was a bit disappointed. The portion was large - unnecessarily so - but the meat was quite dried out and not a bit of the yummy crackling skin I had expected. Also, much too lean .. not even a teeny bit of fat.
