The two things that stick out in my mind about this pub was that the staff were quiet friendly, but…read morethe pub itself really did lack that charm that I tend to like in pubs. Mind you, it isn't located in the centre of Bendigo which meant that when I ended up here it was rather quiet, and I do like that in a pub, but then again, it might also have had something to do when I passed by. Still, as a pub it wasn't all that bad, and of course, having friendly staff really does help at times as well. Sure, it may not have been a favourite, but it was still nice.

An old school gold rush hotel with solid pub staples for a relaxed family lunch…read more You can make a reservation for the dining room yet there is no table service. Specials are on the wall and once you have made your choice, remember your table number and head to the bar to order. The service is very friendly and accommodating, the bar tender was more than happy to allow us to switch up a few menu items which we greatly appreciated. One menu item I couldn't go past was the damper. You don't see that on too many menus and I was pleased to see it arrive hot from the oven. Parents take note, the damper was hugely popular with the kids. The little ones also seemed to enjoy their little miner's menu options of pizza, fish n'chips and nuggets n'chips. The guys enjoyed their steaks and my salmon was simple and healthy. The front bar has a pool table and the usual gambling options. Outdoor seating is available on the footpath. We didn't have time for dessert but I was impressed to note that gluten free options were available.

Thought I would post on today's experience…read more First time in Bendigo, as soon as we drove in the wife and I both commented on how much it reminds us of New Orleans, it has a very similar look/feel. So decided to see if there was some American food, was not disappointed by the yard bird. Sitting out on the balcony eating hot wings, brisket burger, southern fried chicken, drinking bourbon and Dr Pepper. Feels like I'm back in the states.

We had a late-ish (after 2pm) lunch on a Saturday afternoon at Yard Bird so there weren't very many…read moreother patrons. We opted to sit inside in the air conditioning but the bar is also surrounded by a great balcony with tables overlooking the centre of town. The menu offers pretty much everything you'd expect from an American restaurant and is fairly priced but the theme is poorly reflected in the decor. Yard Bird is situated upstairs in an old Irish hotel so it's hard to throw a couple of baseball cards and Budweiser signs around and call it an American bar. I ordered the shrimp po boy and while I was impressed with the generous portion of food I received it was night impossible to eat. When something comes in sandwich/roll form you expect the be able to pick it up and eat it but the whole outside of the roll was covered in shrimp sauce and it was poorly packed (for presentation). It didn't taste too bad but the shrimp really did feel like they were pre-packaged, crumbed and frozen. I understand that seafood is generally on ice but I would expect crumbing/battering/coasting to happen in-house and whilst I can't say for certain this hasn't been the case here, I can say that it didn't seem like it to me. My partner ordered the southern fried yard bird (chicken) and was impressed with the fact that he received breast meat rather than drumsticks and wings. It wasn't amazing food but it certainly wasn't terrible and the price helps that along a bit too. I'd definitely like to give Yard Bird another try at a bustling time.
