last night (Saturday) was my third visit to Golden Guinea, and I've really fallen in love with the place. It has previously been crowned 'Bristol Best Back Street Boozer' and I can see why!
It's a really small pub that has no more than 8 tables. Inside it has a proper pub feel, with a big wooden bar and a couple of old chesterfields. Walk to the back of the pub and there's a really nice decked terrace area with pub benches and a couple of patio heaters. I've not used the terrace in the summer, but I bet it's a really nice place to hang out. Downstairs there's another small room and a terrace area and graffiti decor. You can hire it our for private parties and it's a really decent space for a party.
Really though, it's nothing spectacular or ground breaking to look at and it doesn't offer anything aesthetically that sets it apart from many other pubs - but what it does have, is a really unique atmosphere and coolness about it. It's all very casual. It's like being at a mates house with a full stocked bar. Every time I've been in there I've found myself chatting to different groups of people and having banter with the bar staff.
I'm gutted that The Golden Guinea is a little too far away to make me a regular, but I like having it as a spontanious little gem to visit every now and again. read more
