On day two of our spring break vacation in rural BC, we found ourselves in need of some essentials,…read moretherefore necessitating a grocery run. Since my grumpy tween twins had NO desire to venture out, much less go shopping with dad, I made the excursion alone. This was good because although the snow had stopped, the roads were pretty sketchy (especially since we are residents of Honolulu and winter driving skills are limited). I originally thought to stop at IGA, but my prior visit to them was disappointing to say the least, so I ventured further into Golden and spied Save On Foods. Being that we live in a large city, this store was small in comparison, but I found it to be fully stocked and reasonably priced. The location was easy to find (but Golden isn't a large town) and I found the parking to be sufficient for the size of the store. The store itself was very clean and organized. As I mentioned, the store was nicely stocked and I was able to find both the things on the "honey do list" as well as some extras to serve as gifts upon heading home (like maple cookies). The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Upon realizing that I didn't have a member savings card, they offered to scan the "tourist" card that was taped to the register. Obviously this request wasn't something new. Very happy with my experience and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Save-On-Foods to everyone and anyone who might ask.

We were staying in Golden on vacation and Overwaitea was our go-to store daily (and sometimes even…read moretwice daily)! I love that they have a water re-filling station for big jugs if you want to be eco-friendly. It's cheaper and more green than buying new liters of water each time. The store is organized very neatly, and has plenty of room for carts to roam about without feeling cramped. Another +1 is having free, super speedy Wi-Fi. A godsend for foreign travelers without a data plan. The service here is what really sets this store apart. They're genuinely friendly and helpful, and make you feel like you're part of their community. Overall, friendly, local grocery store with a great selection and variety of foods. We checked out IGA one day, and we can say that we 100% prefer Overwaitea over IGA. I highly recommend this be your stop when you're in town!

I'm just thankful there was something. Could there be more stores? Sure. But is the community large…read moreenough to support it when it isn't tourist season? Dunno. There was a sports store to get winter or hiking gear that you forgot. I can't remember though if there were swim suits. There was a cute gift store with some stuff for the kiddies, books, etc. There was a more kitschy souvenir shop with all your souvenir doodads. There was also a rock store with some fossils and jewelry. The mall is run by the local tribe, so at least you know you aren't supporting some faceless conglomerate. And a lot of the items sold at the stores were by locals, which I think is more unique. There was also a post office, a liquor store, a grocery store, a boba cafe (of all things), and a normal cafe. Behind the cafe are some picnic tables you can sit at. There were also a lot of tour buses coming in. If you aren't on one of these buses, be prepared for the crowds. If you're on one of these buses, I hope this isn't your final stop - I hope you have a stop at Lake Louise. I didn't really understand the effort of the tour bus groups to take photos of the river by the parking lot. Or of the parking lot. There will be better photo opportunities, I promise.

It also has a visitor center that will provide information if you don't know your way around the area. It is a nice place to stop for supplies, food or gifts. Unfortunately, the power went out while we were here and all of the stores had to temporarily close up. But it is a nice place to stop while in the park if you need anything.

My trips have been in the winter and seeing The Crossing for gasoline and a little something to eat is a welcome sight. The Crossing Resort also offers Motel rooms along with a Dining Room, Cafeteria, and a huge Gift Shop. At the peak season, it takes about 80 staff members to operate the resort. Walking into their gift shop turned out to be a welcome afterthought. The sales floor is huge and there's lots of stuff to consider, even if I didn't really need any of it. And since I may never pass this way again, of course I bought something! And I'm sure it had a Maple Leaf on it.

It is definately a fun browse before you hit the highway; Right in the middle of the shopping area, there is a large jewellery counter that has everything from assembly line inexpensive jewellery for kids, to beautiful semi-precious stone jewellery for adults. In the back, there is a grocery aisle if you are looking for snacks. There is also a large selection of books, dvds and CDs if you are looking to entertain passengers with a new movie or some new music. There are tonnes of souvenirs. Almost anything you can think of. Tshirts, sweatshirts, carvings and artwork, maple syrup and Canadian souvenirs. It is almost impossible to get out of this store without purchasing "something". And the prices aren't too bad! If you are looking to stock up on anything for your road trip, or to find some unique souvenirs, the crossing is definately worth checking out!
