My Samoa Polynesian Food & Takeaway

If you're looking for typical Polynesian foods, My Samoa in Kelston is a pretty good place to…read morestart. Family run and owned, this little place is on the side street near Kelston Boys High School. West Auckland boasts many similar shops that claim to do "quality" and "traditional" Pacific foods. It can be so hard to find a shop bought meal that will match your mums, grandmas or maybe even your dads Sunday lunch - but My Samoa makes a valiant effort. Their taro is firm (not soggy/low quality) and covered well in coconut cream- $3 for a piece bigger than your hand isn't too bad going. They also sell cooked banana's (fa'i) for $1, again - great price and great taste. They then do a smorgasboard of prepared dishes including lamb flaps, chopsuey, chicken curry and other 'bulk' styled meals that can be bought in $5-$11 dollar chinese takeaway style boxes. They also offer many other samoan delicacies - $5 Luau (taro leaves filled with coconut cream), Panikekes (fried banana doughnuts), Keke Pua'a (pork buns) and much much more. The chopsuey is decent - they use a enough soy sauce for it to be tasty, however they do use some cheap cuts of meat, meaning you may find some small bones throughout your vermicelli. The pumpkin and lamb we tried today was delicious and just needed a bit of seasoning. The taro and banana's were all fantastic and alot better than the ones found down the road in Glendene- so I will definitely be back for that. We also get the fish/coocnut cream dish (Eleni) which was also very nice. If you've ever wanted to try some traditional Island grub, outside of the Pasifika Festival - My Samoa would be a fantastic place to start.

I don't know if I have ever eaten so much food for so little money!…read more I'm told Mr Zhou was the previous owner of New Flavour and plenty of dishes are the similar to what you'll find there but what surprised me is that, contrary to the name, Mr Zhou does a whole heap more than dumplings. Don't worry there's still plenty of those doughy delights but there's also hand-pulled noodles, savoury pancakes and this refreshingly zingy salad of cucumber and tofu that fans of New fFavour will know well. Seriously, how does this man find the time.... The interior isn't much to write home about with only a couple of cheap tables and chairs but the food comes out fresh and fast and of course, there's takeaway. You can even purchase the dumplings frozen for $2 less than the menu price to cook at home. I know what I'll be serving at my next dinner party....

There are only about 3-4 small tables, and the food is served in plastic takeaway containers. On the night we visited they were doing a roaring takeaway trade. The owners used to run New Flavour, so they know their way around homemade dumplings, hand-pulled noodles & tasty Chinese food. The menu is very similar to New Flavour, so dumplings are a must - choose from such flavours, and my personal favourites, of Pork, prawn & chives, Mutton & onion and Egg, chives & prawn. You can order them steamed or fried, or even frozen to take them away & cook at home! Other dish recommendations are: Sliced dried tofu & cucumber salad if you can handle a tangy hit of chilli in the dressing, the Fried pancakes, any of the noodle dishes and the Deep-fried eggplant with pork mince stuffing. In fact, give me time & I'd probably list the entire menu! Would love to hear some other tried & true favourites though. Cheap, cheerful Chinese - you can't go wrong!
