I'll start off by saying that Bergen has no lack of coffee shops or bakeries- Godt Brød, or "Good Bread," lives up to its name and has a remarkable selection of breads and other baked goods. Upon arriving into Bergen after an overnight ride on the NSB from Oslo, my boyfriend and I were desperate for a place with not only great breakfast but a strong cup of coffee and free wifi so we could map our day and get suggestions about what to do in Bergen. Godt Brød checks almost all of those boxes. They offer a variety of breakfast options- I chose to have a scone with jam, while my boyfriend opted for a sandwich of assorted meats and accoutrements. The scone I had was absolutely delicious- it was dense but not at all dry and had a nice mix of dried fruits and nuts through out. My boyfriend's sandwich, which they let him customize from scratch, was hearty and all ingredients were very fresh and well prepared. We both had hot coffee, which was good but not great (Norway seems to really love coffee, so if you're a coffee enthusiast I would check out some of the other cafes in Bergen), but gave us the caffeine we needed to start our day of exploring. The major reason I am detracting a star is because, while there is free wifi offered at this shop, to access it you need to enter a phone number, which they send an access code to. This would typically not be a problem, but like many travelers I know, I did not purchase an international phone plan and was solely relying on wifi to do things like get directions and suggestions for what to do while in Bergen. I did not have a phone number that could receive the text with the access code and so I was unable to access the wifi that was offered. It was also frustrating because the ambience of the cafe is really lovely and comfortable and would have been the perfect space to plan out our day! Ultimately, we had a wonderful breakfast and Godt Brød is definitely worth checking out, we just opted for other cafes for the rest of our trip that offered free wifi! read more
