Located on a traffic island near downtown Oyster Bay, this equestrian statue of Theodore Roosevelt…read moredepicts him as the rough rider as he was known during the 1898-1902 Spanish-American War. The Rough Riders was a nickname given to the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry, one of three such regiments raised in 1898 for the Spanish-American War and the only one to see combat. With the beginning of the Spanish-American War in late April 1898, Roosevelt resigned from his post as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Along with Army Colonel Leonard Wood, he formed the First US Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) was the 25th Vice President of the United States under William McKinley and took over on March 4 1901 after he was assassinated. This made Roosevelt the 26th President and he served until 1909. The regiment trained for several weeks in San Antonio, Texas, and in his autobiography, Roosevelt wrote that his prior experience with the New York National Guard had been invaluable, in that it enabled him to immediately begin teaching his men basic soldiering skills. Under his leadership, the Rough Riders became famous for the charge up Kettle Hill on July 1, 1898, while supporting the regulars. Roosevelt always recalled the Battle of Kettle Hill (part of the San Juan Heights) as "the great day of my life" and "my crowded hour" and in 2001, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions. Roosevelt accomplished much in office. He prioritized conservation and established national parks, forests, and monuments intended to preserve the nation's natural resources. In foreign policy, he focused on Central America where he began construction of the Panama Canal. He expanded the Navy and sent the Great White Fleet on a world tour to project American naval power. His successful efforts to broker the end of the Russo-Japanese War won him the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize. Roosevelt was elected to a full term in 1904 and continued to promote progressive policies. Theodore Roosevelt had many family ties in the area and the "Summer White House" was in Oyster Bay. He died here in Oyster Bay of a blood clot at age 60 and is laid to rest in the town's Youngs Memorial Cemetery. [Review 15328 overall, 830 of 2021, number 213 in New York.]
