The Lion Hotel

Oh the Lion. I really liked this place at first. Nice beers and not too pricey. Not a dark…read moreatmosphere. Pretty quiet place, on the small side, but a few tvs tunes to news and pop entertainment. The issue I had was staff. The barman the night I went could not have been less than interested in serving me and/or taking my money. Fine- not everyone needs to be my best friend. But it continued on during the night and that's annoying. He also started turning over chairs about 10:50 when they close at 11. Also not usually a big deal but there aren't many tables in there and I feel the could have not tried to kick us out in a passive aggressive way. Finally, the barman didn't even wait until my companion and I were both out of the door before making fun of that fact that we were Americans- which I funny because I am, but my companion is not only Welsh but lived in this tiny town. Won't spend my money there again.

A trip to Wales! We grabbed a change of plans to hop in the car and booked this last minute. What a…read moregreat service! First there was an immediate personal thank you email upon booking asking us to confirm arrival times. Then there was the welcome when we got there - they knew our names - plus immediate email responses when we were updating ETA times. Staying here is like staying at your long lost Aunty's place, you feel you should know them better than you do. There were huge breakfasts made to order plus an array of cereals and fruits to be had washed down with plentiful coffee. On Easter Sunday, we had a cream egg on the tablespoon left for us! Highly recommended and just a few minutes walk to the beach, castle and local shops. Parking too!

Hopefully they will do something with the 'back garden' as we had views of rubble and a fire escape. A few flowers and bushes would have done wonders! Staff were very friendly, rooms nice and clean and comfy (but HOT - we kept the windows permanently open!!) On-suite showers great, lots of hot water, bathrooms spotless. Food pleasant and affordable. Clientele seems to be primarily coaching holidays (at least it was when we were there). Waitresses European so no Welsh spoken, but they are really very friendly and obviously take great pride in their work. Popped in to the bingo in the evening - the caller was a scream! Not sure if that's how it's usually done as I've never been to a bingo hall, but it's well worth a visit if your staying! The children had a whale of a time.

I went to a wedding in Cirrieth recently and had booked no accodomation. After asking at the sea…read morefront B&Bs, with little luck, we decided upon trying the hotels. The proprietors - a lovely couple - had 1 single room left, but agreed to erect a put-you-up style bed into the room as well, to accomodate me and my mate. The rooms are nicely furnished and en suite, the breakfast is decent quality, and the owners are extremely welcoming and helpful. Also the honesty bar (after hours help yourself and write it in the book) was most welcome when we returned after the wedding reception. Criccieth itself is beautiful - with coastline, peninsular jutting out in the distance, and a ruined castle on a hill dominating the town. I'd stay at Min Y Gaer again on a visit to Criccieth!
