One of the nicer looking and more professional of the datacenters I've been to, GS is well located near East India DLR and also close to a shop that sells peanut butter M&Ms.
As with many datacenters, the difficult thing about this one is getting in - it always takes them rather a long time to find the email saying that you're going to be turning up, and it usually seems something of a surprise, so it can seem a little nervewracking talking to the speaker-on-a-post next to the one-at-a-time tube doors with weight sensitive panels as to whether they're going to let you in, and if they are you often wonder if it's all a trick and they're just going to seal you in the tube and blast you in to space.
The other problem is getting things out again - unless you've emailed 3 months in advance in triplicate that you're going to be removing some servers, getting in to the service elevator can seem like a bit of a chore, and getting out past security on the ground floor at the service entrance is again apparently a huge deal.
You can imagine that this is all probably just a deterrent for people who might decide to do something untoward however. Other than that, the facilities are modern and clean, the staff are friendly enough and you certainly feel like nobody is going to steal any of your servers. It also has the advantage over many other datacenters that the corridors between server rooms follow normal euclidean geometry and it's pretty difficult to get lost.
It's all about par for the course, but at least it looks professional :) read more
