I was fortunate enough to find Dr Marron a few months after 9/11 when I was depressed and struggling on a number of fronts. She helped me get a handle on my anxieties then, and over the years since I've accessed her help whenever I was going through something sticky or making a leap forward in some crucial way. I love her style: she is a judgment-free listener (over time I've shared some doozies!), appropriately clinical but without being the cold, detached feeling, and her cognitive-behavioral bent focuses more on coaching me toward more productive ways of dealing with my anxieties or negative emotions, rather than just endlessly swirling around in whatever childhood forces "made me this way..." Which is not to say we haven't talked plenty about those forces (and she brings great insight to those dynamics), but those understandings are used to drive me forward rather than stay stuck or feel sorry for myself.
A note for you looking at therapists: do it. Like I said, I was lucky to find such a skilled clinician I clicked with. I have grown and changed so much as a person - through many experiences, of course, but working with a great therapist has without a doubt helped me design who I want to be, and to grow in a direction I've chosen rather than one that just happened to me. I am such a happier, stronger, more well-adjusted person than I would have been otherwise - a better mother, better friend, everything. It started out to ride out a depression/crisis, but over time, it turns out that the proactive aspects of therapy (ie not just fixing what's "wrong" but creating with intention) are even more valuable. Invest in yourself and your health! It will pay off, I promise. And you absolutely can't go wrong with Dr Marron. Good luck!! read more
