I decided to be responsible and forgo my contact-lens wearing for several days, thinking I'd scratched my eye. Well, a week later on Sunday, I tried putting in a new pair of contacts only to again experience the irritable eyes of contact-lens anger. Worried, I figured I should stop in to see an optician. My local Specsavers store (Liverpool Street) is not-so-handily closed on Sundays, so I cycled over to the Strand store at its opening time of 12pm. Unfortunately, I found the doors locked despite there being a guy inside sitting on a chair, staring at me bemusedly. He did nothing. It was blazingly sunny outside. I was wearing my glasses. I was sweaty. And now annoyed. Begrudgingly I got back on my bicycle, resigned to cycling home. But then I thought, 'I know, I'll just head down to Walworth'. Something you wouldn't hear yourself uttering unless you too needed to see an optician on a Sunday. That is, unless you're particularly into enthusiastic Baptist gospel music, which Walworth would seem to have an abundance of. Well, the Walworth Specsavers exceeded my expectations. Not only did it have an enormous selection of spectacles on offer (my 3 previous local Specsaverses seemed to have a rather pitiful stock in comparison), but it had an optician on duty who was able to see me without an appointment, within a matter of 45 minutes. The optician put some orange drops in my eyes, had me look up, down and to the side, and then - having not found anything curious - flipped my eyelids up. That was weird. But she discovered my problem. An eyelid infection, prescribed some eye drops, told me to come back in a week for a follow-up. Perfect. Oh, and I didn't have to pay anything. Even better. I might just have to make this my local Specsavers.

Everytime I booked an appointment I had to wait at least 10 minutes because they were unable to handle the lunchtime rush. All three times that I went in I needed to be informed of when my glasses/contacts had arrived at the store and they didn't contact me once. When "a few days" became two weeks I couldn't get through on the telephone to enquire, which was just another hassle. I won't be going back unless I have to!

Like many of the other branches, this branch offers a 30% discount for students (bring your ID card), though you need to get a pair worth above 75 pounds for the discount to apply, which was okay for me as I was looking for one in this range anyway (scratch-resistant treatment on the lens and all). The selection of glasses is reasonable, though if you tend to like a lot of choice, you may prefer to try a large branch elsewhere (especially for designer brands).

These glasses that I picked up first were also the ones I ended up buying. The frame is called Cartwright and I immediately liked them. The service was great and although they said that it would take up to 7 business days for my glasses to be ready, I received a notification the next business day that I'd be able to pick them up. Also, I thought they were a good value for money: £150 including prescription lenses.

These would be the styles to show up in our part of the country in a year, or two. The wife liked the styles. We did some looking, and in a few minutes we had frames to take with us. These were not something we were going to be able to get in the States. We will get her prescription updated at home and lenses made. The young lady who helped us could not have been be nicer. She made sure the frames were the correct size for my wife's head, and that they fit properly. We are happy.
