Hook Line & Land Em Fishing Adventures - Caught our limit of 6 sockeye in just 30 minutes once the run hit!

I found Hook, Line, & Land Em via an online search, and their rates were reasonable so I gave a…read morecall. Felix did a good job talking about the salmon runs and the tide tables -- it was clear to me that we was a true fisherman who clearly knew his stuff, so that made me confident we would be able to catch some fish (in our case, we only wanted to do a half day of sockeye fishing.) We ended up being assigned his other guide, JD, but that wasn't a problem because he is also very skilled and experienced fishing for salmon in this area! We had one snag at the beginning: we hadn't been told we needed to bring waders or boots, neither of which we had -- but JD quickly remedied that situation, and from that point on it was smooth sailing, with some great fishing in perfect weather on the beautiful Kasilof River. Sockeye fishing is a very different technique and procedure to any other fishing we had ever done (no casting? no reeling? no lure or bait??), so it took some getting used to and some trust in JD's instructions, especially when we had dropped the line hundreds of times with no bites. But JD knew his stuff, and he had placed us in the right spot at the right time, so once the salmon run came up, we hit them pretty fast and furious. We were there for over an hour before hooking one, but once we caught one, we started hooking them left and right. Within 30 minutes, we had maxed our 6-catch limit, and we headed in for JD to masterfully fillet them for us. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these guys -- they have competitive prices and they know what they are doing, just trust them and listen to them and you will catch fish!

Let me tell you about our trip with Felix. Our trip started off with 4 good friends who have not…read morecaught up in a while. We were pleased to see that Felix is there to WIN and catch fish. If you are looking for a soft experience and don't want to catch fish, then I would recommend you use any other guide on the Kasilof. There is no chardonnay and cabernet served in a stem glass, however there are custom cures Felix puts on wild king salmon eggs, with the optimal nitrate balance. Felix was incredibly detailed, always using gloves, as King Salmon can smell 'parts per billion'. Additionally, there are a bunch of guides that use juke lures. - Felix only uses lures that were made prior to Quick Fish getting soft and having their manufacturing done in China - Felix only uses lures that have a minimum of 5 king teeth marks cut deeply on the lure - Felix will row a hole 2-3x more than other guides to get tight lines - and 'communicate' to other captains that interfere with your path to the gloryholes With the above said, Felix is somewhat timid about breaking out a very amazing technique on the Kasilof. This technique is not for everyone, it is for those who want to catch fish. It is called the Mooch. At the start of the trip, it is key to ask Felix about 'Mooching' some eggs. Depending on the conditions, Felix may be open to it. If you make it to the 3rd hole, and there is no mention of 'mooching' from the captain, kindly ask, and you might be rewarded. Once Felix identifies you are able to master the technique, you may be fortunate enough to Mooch off his boat. Felix was able to adjust during our mooch, and put some special cured eggs. These eggs were so cured that when he inserted the hook and the egg squirted everywhere. Most Kasilof captains will put a drop or 2 of cure on the eggs, but we didn't fly 3,000 miles to have a few drops - ours were dripping with his proprietary cure. In summary - we landed king salmon, sockeye, and steelhead. Being from Montana, I was surprised to see disappointment in landing a steelhead. After landing a King Salmon - I see why. I would highly recommend Felix and his buddy Brian for those who want not only a great time, but to catch fish and have plenty of King Salmon on the deck. Just don't forget to ask about the Mooch.
