If you're planning on visiting Barcelona, I highly recommend that you make a wine tasting reservation here. Recaredo Winery is located in a historic Barcelona wine valley called The Penedes Wine Region. They are pioneers in biodynamic, viticulture, and is a step beyond organic farming. Their vineyards are handled with care by hand without the use of industrial machinery, chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or fungicides. They also use old-fashioned, traditional techniques of disgorgement when making wines. It's still done by true artisans, who expel the lees manually at the naturally cool temperatures of the cellars. What also makes their wines unique is the use of their grape juice (instead of using processed sugar) during the fermentation process. Recaredo's long-aged sparkling wines spend a minimum of 2.5 to 20 years in their dark cellars and are only aged with natural cork stoppers. Their dedication and commitment to their community, land, traditional techniques, and quality wines are what makes Recaredo's Corpinnat Sparkling Wines exceptional! I highly recommend a visit if you are staying in the Barcelona area.

We had asked our guide to take us to small boutique wineries that are doing something special and this place certainly fit the bill. They are located in the little town that is the center of Cava production and just up the street from the larger producers like Frexinet. You need to have an appointment to visit and the cost for the tasting is 18€. We learned a bit about Cava product during the tour deep into the Caves well below the surface that was finished with a pleasant seated tasting of a number of styles of their sparkling wine. The caves seem to go on forever with bottles as far as the eyes can see. Our guide clearly explained everything about the production process and their different types of cava and allowed plenty of time for questions. They were the only tour that allowed us to take pictures in the caves (without the flash of course). At the end you can taste about six different varieties. They also brought out some tasty snacks: a local sausage, olives, and crackers. It was a lot for a snack! I bought six bottles and wanted to buy more. Out of all the cava I tasted on this trip, Gramona was my favorite. The cava is so creamy. Their ice wine is also delicious. You get to taste one (Riesling on our visit) during the tasting, but I also inquired about the Gewürztraminer since I love this grape. She let us taste it too. They were so different, but I loved both and took a bottle of each home. They also have a Jasmine wine that is unique and lovely. If you're on the fence about which place to tour, choose Gramona. Others think it's delicious as well as we even saw Disfrutar serving it up a few days later during the first course for some tables. This is a fabulous cava and an excellent tour!

He attempted to sneak into the US about 8 times and was finally successful on his last attempt. I would have loved to have had a conversation with him. He was friends with lots of Hollywood actors (including Marilyn Monroe, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Marlon Brando, Robert Wagner, ...) and several American presidents (Ronald Reagon, John F. Kenney, George Bush, ...). He worked for Frank Sinatra and Joe DiMaggio. He was a business partner with actor James Dean. His wine was served at the inauguration of president Ronald Reagon, his friend; although he was a life long democrat. He owned and operated the finest Italian restaurant, La Scala, in Hollywood. The food at his restaurant was so good that the government of Italy declared him Italy's top food ambassador to America. He served Mayilyn Monroe her last meal before she passed away. His was the first major winery to plant French varietals in Spain and win awards with his results. The list of amazing feats in his life go on and on. I strongly encourage you to google his name for more facts about his amazing life story. I have only scratched the surface with the few facts that I have highlighted. Moreover, why am I writing about his winery? Well, I had the privilege to have toured his beautiful award winning winery. The location is very beautiful, its located on the country side of Catalonia. The wine I was offered during my tour was simply excellent. Overall, I am not a big fan of Chardonnay, yet, the one I tasted here was simply the best I have ever tasted. It was bright and vibrant, it was not aged in a wood barrel which changes the character of the final grape product. It was a very delicious white wine that would pair up perfectly with seafood. I am now officially a fan of their young unaged unoaked Chardonnay. His cabernet sauvigon was also very good as was his mix of cabernat franc and cabernet sauvigon. Both of his red wines were heavy complex reds with excellent residual flavors that would pair up well with a beef or lamb meal. All of the wines would be excellent choices with tapas. Now, I should mention the tour guide was excellent. He never lost anyone's attention in the group. He was just an all around excellent presenter. I am sorry that I don't remember his name, but he is in my photographs. I highly recommend stopping here for a tour of the winery and a tasting of the great wines! Buen provecho!!

Like many of the wineries in California today, this one revels in celebrating their story and your tour starts with a slick 10-minute bio-pic about the scrappy founder and his connections to some of the Hollywood elite from the 1950's like Frank Sinatra. He later went on to create the legendary Hollywood restaurant La Scala and created the winery to supply the restaurant. You can learn the rest of the story when you visit. Despite the somewhat overdone homage, the wines were surprisingly good. We tasted three - a Chardonnay, Gigi, produced for the restaurant that was light and without the heavy buttery flavors of California, a 100% merlot that was rich and velvety and a Cabernet blend with big bold aromas and very low tannins. All were excellent. It is a pity they don't ship to America although they do have a distributor so it might be possible to find them on the coasts. Recommended

Second, great tour. We learned about the terroir- the soil, the atmosphere, how the cover crops help with the soil. The biodynamic principals of the winery mean they not only are organic, and use organic manure and special herbs in their compost (as well as cattle horns) but they also plant, and trim vines and harvest according to the phases of the moon. We tasted a cava, a white called cosmic- 10 euros, a red called Indigena (2013)- 10 Euros, and a red called Mas Irene (2014)- 16 Euros. They were all delicious. But I ALSO tried Music- a white dessert wine, with lots of honey notes, and raisin, but not syrupy at all- it was so good (21.50 euros) that I bought 2 bottles of that, 1 of Indigena, and 4 bottles of honey (5 euros each)- and they said the honey was from their own hives and was rosemary honey. It was very good. You can try it if you ask. Their olive oil is also fabulous- but you've got limits on how much you can carry home, so I had to pace myself. For the tasting we were given crackers and cheese and sliced sausage. We also got some bread to dip in the olive oil at the end of the tasting. The tasting room is lovely, and there is a gorgeous outdoor seating area. The story of the family is fascinating, and if you are in Spain, and you have the chance to go here- take it! I'm from the SF Bay Area like the other reviewer, and I'm a member of many wineries and I've worked at the wineries as a pourer (because who doesn't want to be paid in wine?) And I loved this place. I thought it might be too much of the same thing- that I'm used to at home, but not at all. If you are disabled, you will NOT be able to go to the cava caves via the steps. I'm mildly disabled and I opted not to do them- a lot of rather dark, narrow steps.

This was my first visit to a European winery so I didn't know what to expect. Pares Malta is an old family-run winery that specializes in Cava (sparkling wine), using organic farming and the process of biodynamics. They make their own compost and rely on natural methods of pest control. To help time harvesting vs planting the tour guide mentioned using the moon and stars (!?). The tour itself was educational and fascinating - from previewing their wines, visiting the fields, composting area, barrel storage, cellars, and finally the tasting room! We tasted a white cava, a rose, and then a red wine. Pairings went with crackers, Machego Cheese, or dried salami. We also sampled their olive oil. Our gorgeous wine host gave lots of tips on serving wine and meals. She mentioned a very good snack is to dip bread in high-quality EVOO, add salt, and then grated dark chocolate. A strange combination but I'm willing to try it!
