We chanced into this lovely bistro looking for hot soup on a chilly day. On nicer days they set out tables in the square but it was overcast and a bit rainy. The soupe du marche change weekly. Ours was a hearty carrot lentil with a hint of ginger. The portion was ample and the soup served piping hot from a cauldron. On a lark we ordered a trio of "half" sandwiches. They were huge!! We were served a smoked salmon goat cheese sandwich, a duck confit with cornichon and a chicken salad sandwich on a bed of fresh greens with balsamic sauce and several slices of Parma ham. The duck confit was thinly applied, rich and bacony. I loved the flavor and the portion was perfect. The chicken salad had cubes of chicken breast in a light mayo sauce with veggies cut in. Very tasty. The salmon was generous in portion with a lovely appearance. Of course the star of the show was the sturdy brown bread that carried the ingredients. I tried other breads around town and have yet to be disappointed with any. The service was excellent and our waiter friendly and helpful in English. I truly enjoyed this rustic gem and plan to return again while in Avignon. read more

Man, was this place a saving grace on an unexpectedly cold day. We arrived shortly after lunch time and were immediately sat in this unexpectedly large restaurant. Service was incredibly prompt and with beer, sandwiches and soup, I think we were in an out within the hour, which was wonderful after several days in slow, but lovely, France. We ordered the soup of the day, which was a delicious blend of tomato, celery and lentils. In addition, we got the salami and croque monsieur. Surprisingly, the salami with butter sandwich with gherkin in the side was probably the best thing we had. The whole experience was lovely. read more

While traveling in France recently I had the opportunity to eat in an unassuming little square in Avignon and fell in love with Ginette Et Marcel's little quintessential french bistro. Abundant tartines await your decisions. We were lucky enough to capture an inside table which allowed us to escape the rain and to enjoy to aroma waffling out of the tiny kitchen station taht cranks out cover after cover of delicious food. A large outside common square, shaded by a large tree is shared by other small businesses. We were served in a timely manor by a friendly waiter who first spoke English but realized I was fluent in french and off we went.. He recommended the daily special which we happily agreed to. a tartine of fresh sardines, tomatoes, onions and capers, and the fois with fig compote, walnuts and a side salad that was dressed not drowning in a lemon vinaigrette, and a fresh glass of the house Rose. after walking around town it was such a pleasure to turn the corner and see this location. The plates were just right. Ingredients were fresh and on point. I did spy another tables fair of salmon and charcuterie which looked great but would of been way too much food for us. I also thought as far as food costs go they could of back off a bit on the proteins without any disappointments, as I saw the return plates with 20 % of the food still on the plates. When I asked the couple if their food was good they loved it but said it was way too much. I'm sure the cost margins are covered. This meal was capped off with scrumptious pear tart and espresso. Situated in the most splendid square in Avignon, all the items are well priced, especially given how delicious the food is. The service is kind and quick and the overall experience is really 5-star worthy. We sat down for a quick gouter that turned into a leisurely hour in the square with the lovely fountain behind us and the beautiful church in front of us. It's a bit far from the papal palace and the bridge but if you're alright to stroll through the lovely city to make it for a meal of drink, I really cannot recommend it enough! read more

This is the oddest of places! What you will remember the most.... is probably the bees that are flying about! Tartines are toast with something on it... Cheese, meat, whatever. The price is cheap. The taste is good. It's a pretty good small meal at a good price. But what you will remember.... Is the bees! read more

Very cozy place to people watch, enjoy a glass of rose and the tartine du jour. I like the ambience enough to return, but I wouldn't order the tartine I had. It was tartine with tomatoes, cheese and jambon cru. The ham was far too fatty. I know some fat is flavor but when I separated it out, it was a rather huge pile of unappetizing goo. Don't need that clogging my arteries. No one does. It is a limited menu, half of it sweets. There's Fischer on tap, salamis air-drying. The bags hold ice for your carafe or bottle of wine. read more

Lovely atmosphere, lovely waiters. Tartines delish, and so are les planchettes ( and there is a decent amount of food). Some local beers that are interesting at least to an American (moi). We stayed here for at least 3 hrs imbibing, talking and eating. read more

Nice little bistro serving home made tartines and other french dishes. The food was hood but I was a bit disappointed with the lack of any kid's menus as well as the soup of the say (home made mixed vegetable) which was not as tasty as I hoped. All in all good restaurant and we will go there again if we're in the mood for tartines. read more
