Fake Cubans. Very tricky employee.
This is my first Yelp review ever, which I felt compelled to write as I unfortunately fell victim to purchasing a box of fake Cuban cigars here. Here's how they did it.
I asked to see a certain type of Cuban cigar (Cohiba Genios). The young employee pulled out a half-empty box of this brand. Over the years, I've learned what to look for in fake Cubans (printing on box, date on box, precision cigar label printing, label adhesives, Habanos label printing, hinges on wooden boxes, triple caps on cigars, and general craftsmanship of both boxes and cigars). As I studied both the box and the remaining cigars closely, I could not find any visual imperfections, so I asked for a full box. He pulled out a full box, but before handing it to me, asked if I wanted anything else. Besides this box, I wanted some individual cigars so I started shopping for individual cigars before I was able to closely inspect the new box he was holding. As I continued to shop for individual cigars, at some point, he placed the box near the register maybe 5 feet away. This is when I lost sight of it. At some point after that, while I was inspecting other cigars and other boxes, either he or another employee placed either the new box or some other box entirely in a black plastic bag. Once I chose a few more individual cigars, he quickly added them to the black plastic bag. He was then very quick to run my credit card as he asked me if I wanted anything else. I honestly wanted to purchase a Habanos ashtray, but he had already handed me a receipt to sign. I didn't think anything of it at the time.
It wasn't until I was back at my hotel later that day, getting ready to leave the country and return home, that I inspected the box, expecting it to have the same characteristics and same general date as the original half-empty box I inspected initially, only to find some very small differences. Though small, this was obviously a box of fakes. Both the box and the cigars were fake.
My mistake was not taking the box out of the bag and inspecting it closely before leaving the store.
One other point worth mentioning - on many of the boxes of real Cubans they did have (and they did have some), the dates on the boxes were generally 3 years old (April 2013). I noticed this on most of the boxes I inspected. Something to keep in mind. read more
