I'm from the Portland area, and my friends and I have always enjoyed spending many an afternoon in…read morethe Jay Garment Antique Mall. The outside is somewhat misleading as it normally is with antique stores - it's much larger on the inside with the main building with an additional back area full of even more goodies. They have an amazing selection of everything - coins, china, magazines, postcards, furniture, mattresses, jewelry, knick-knacks, records, assorted collectibles, country charm-type stuff, primitives, Americana - everything you'd expect at a great antique mall, and generally all of it is good quality stuff at very reasonable prices. The staff is so helpful and friendly - if you need something, they will not hesitate to assist you, and if you don't need help, they won't pester you. For being a small-town store, they certainly have a lot of great treasures to be found. Of course, some of these treasures require a little more digging than others, but all of the wares in the place are organized rather well, so finding what you're looking for is rarely a problem. Overall, if you're ever in the Portland area, you should definitely pay a visit to the Jay Garment Antique Mall - you won't be sorry. It's a must-visit for any antiquing excursion in the Central Indiana area.

Some of the booths are well organized and some are just a mess. I did find one fantastic basket but not much else. The lady working here was delightful. She reached out to the person that had the booth and tried to get me the best price possible. That was appreciated. Especially since the basket was marked pretty high. If I was in the area I would definitely check back but I wouldn't drive the 45 minutes I drove to get here again just to come in. Worth checking out though if in the area.

The first time I came here, I was looking for something very specific (they didn't have it); it was…read morearound the holiday season and many booths were holiday-oriented. I left disappointed, especially for the size of the place. My mom commented "this place isn't what it used to be". The second time I really took my time browsing and had much better luck, leaving with several items (at excellent prices). I later regretted not buying more! Normally I can tell within a second's glance if a booth is worth my time or not, but here you really should examine each booth. I saw things here that are no longer easy to come across in your average antique mall. I definitely have my favorite dealers here, but there really are great pieces scattered throughout the mall. They keep junk to a minimum and many booths almost look like mini museums (if you prefer flea market junk, by all means, head over to Maumee). The place is well staffed and everyone was nice enough. One small anecdote: they do apparently have a very small cabinet booth with Nazi paraphernalia. I only know this because I overheard customers pointing it out. I would have never noticed this cabinet otherwise, but I still think those objects belong in museums rather than antique malls.

I love that I'm 20 minutes from this HUGE mall. One of my favorite places to search. Everything…read morefrom mid century items to albums and even some antiques. Search for the bargains and the friendly staff will check you out. They do a good job of holding you items for you also.

I walked out with postcards, stamps, and an old 4th of July publication all originals from the late 1800's as well as an original civil war letter written home from Georgia in 1862. Just about anything you could think of in there - a lot of various sports paraphernalia . "Friendly" crowd of guys playing cards in the front, let you wander the store for diamonds in the rough without having to talk to 20 guys at 20 "booths" like some flea markets. Shelves and side rooms are well organized with stuff from different sellers, but its all handled up at the front of the store. This is one place I'll definitely be stopping in every time I get back home to visit!

There was so much stuff and such a huge variety of things that I'm sure we could've walked through a second time and found more. Prices were good but as with any store you just have to know what you're shopping for to make sure you get the best deals. Only downfall is the aisles are a little close together and you can't access what's in the back on the bottom 2 shelves without fully getting down on the floor.
