Gilchrist Park has a way of feeling alive even on a cool winter morning. I arrived around 9am on a Sunday expecting a quiet start, but the place was already humming with tennis players, dog walkers, and people easing into the day along the Harborwalk. The breeze off the water made everything feel crisp and unhurried. The public restrooms were open, clean, and very welcome after my morning coffee, which is not something you can take for granted in a waterfront park. Parking is probably tight when there is an event, but on this visit it was easy enough to slip into a spot and enjoy the shoreline without any stress. The view of the bridges was especially lovely, stretching across the wide river with a kind of quiet confidence. From here you really appreciate how much engineering went into building and maintaining them, and how gracefully they connect the two sides of the harbor. The seagulls added their own bit of drama. They were unusually active, circling and calling, and once they noticed I was eating a sandwich they fell into formation behind me like a feathery escort. This 11 acre park is named for Governor Albert Gilchrist, a real estate broker, surveyor, and political leader and one of the founding fathers of the City. Gilchrist grew up in Georgia and came to Punta Gorda as surveyor. Governor Gilchrist first served on the City Council, then in the State Legislature before becoming the 20th Governor of Florida from 1909 to 1913. Upon his death, Governor Gilchrist established a $5,000 endowment to the City for the provision of ice cream to all the children of Punta Gorda on Halloween. This tradition still continues today with the help of community sponsors. The park is located at 400 W. Retta Esplanade in historic Punta Gorda, Gilchrist Park runs along the waterfront between the downtown and Fishermen's Village. In the the park you get a view of Charlotte Harbor. Park amenities include a large pirate themed playground, basketball, tennis and pickleball courts, fishing pier (closed), gazebo, picnic pavilions, and open green space. In the center of the park along the water there is a large statue of Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon memorializing when he came ashore as the first European in this area in the 16th century. The statue was donated by the Royal Order of Ponce de Leon Conquistadors,an organization "dedicated to the preservation of the Spanish heritage of Charlotte County and Florida." The statue was dedicated on March 27, 2005. Weddings, craft shows and concerts are some of the events held in the park. Also located within the park is the Bayfront Center operated by the YMCA of Charlotte County. This facility hosts YMCA programs including a sailing center. The YMCA rents this waterfront facility. read more

The park is a local favorite with pickle ball courts dominating the scene. However the two nearby tennis courts have been neglected and fallen into barely playable conditions. City Council to hopefully approve much needed repairs/resurfacing which have not been done since 1996. Also basketball courts nearby. Free tai chi Saturdays 930-1030am near gazebo, rain or shine. read more

Beautiful park in downtown Punta Gorda with offerings for all ages. Plenty of covered picnic areas. Tennis, pickle ball and basketball courts. Clean restrooms. Plenty of land for kids to run and play. This is a great place to watch sunsets in the evening. read more

Beautiful park with a spectacular harbor views and walkway. You can catch a glimpse of the dolphins or stingrays. Very clean and well maintained. Plenty of parking by Fisherman's village area. There are areas for picnic and BBQ, playground, tennis courts, pickle balls courts, basketball court... Although the park is under construction for more parking, it's still open for public to enjoy the best that Florida can offer. read more

Punta Gorda set aside eleven acres along the Peace River and developed a lovely, community park. There are gazebos to watch the water and the sun or to take as cover when it rains. There is a wooden fishing pier. A sidewalk follows the River's edge that is shored up by those rocky edges called rip rap. A fountain has a ltall statue of Ponce de Leon who is said to have landed here in the 1500's, but didnt stay long. It wasn't exactly the Pilgrim and Indians story here. A Calusa reportedly shot him with an arrow, his sailors scooped him up ,and they headed south where he died of his wounds in Cuba. The park has several tennis courts that are well maintained and popular. A sandy, fenced area has play equipment. I was glad to see an actual merry-go-round with kids spinning each other off with great joy. And there's lots of parking, facing the water, that allowss even the laziest to enjoy a view of the River and the US41 bridge. read more

If finding a spot where you can let the kids go and relax with a beautiful view , then Gilchrist Park is a great find. The playground area is fneced in so the tikes can't escape and there is plenty of seating , swings and benches to rest these ole bones while they zip around. "They" are my grandkids, and let me tell you they do zip. The biggest attration in the playground is a huge tree that is a kids dream come true. What kid doesn't like climbing trees. When the kids tire out you can take a lovely walk on the sidewalk along the water front to the pier. I have to say, this is a well thought out park, with lots to do for all ages including tennis couts, basletball courts at the next door Y . Couldn't have had a better better afternoon. read more

Wow! This park is really big! Jogging trail, tennis courts and a pier! We went at night and accidentally interrupted a cute couple having a "conversation" on the pier. I'm sure they found another shady spot in the park to talk. It's quiet at night and a great place to clear your mind to relax after a long day. read more

Nice waterfront park - good views of the sunset. There's a gazebo for all, some tennis courts, a walkway near the river, a playground with a great climbing tree for the kids, and occasional entertainment. Good place to walk around, or sit and relax, or watch the kids. read more

Beautiful park, beautiful views.. come in the morning to jog, play tennis, hit the play ground with the kids or return in the evening to watch the sunset. I would give the park 5 stars but the playground for the kids could be better maintained. Some equipment is out of date and recently the city removed several pieces that were questionable but new pieces were not erected in their place leaving voids. Overall this is a hidden gem in downtown and a nice place to spend the afternoon. read more

The 1 star rating is not for the park but the City of Punta Gorda who in their infinite elected wisdom has opted to close Gilchrist and the entire waterfront along it at the height of tourist season. Forget walking, jogging, pickle ball, gazebo, kids playground, impromptu music and sitting enjoying the views. The City is ripping the entire thing apart and given the pace of how they work in this town, we will be lucky to have it back next year. Barricades and dire warning signs went up on Jan 4th. Gilchrist Park is a very beautiful park along the Peace River. The sunsets are breath taking. There are several shelters with picnic tables, a gazebo, restrooms, playground, tennis and basketball courts, plenty of paved sidewalks for walking, jogging and biking, a fishing pier, plus more... My favorite time to visit the park is every Tuesday evening. At 6:00 there is music in the shelters and gazebo. My husband and I are musicians. We join other musicians and singers there for a fun evening of music. There are many good players and singers on hand and the crowd is always very responsive. (See photos I posted) read more

Long park along the Peace River where it flows into Charlotte Harbor. Angled just right for those beautiful Florida sunsets. Features include tennis court and fishing pier, several benches to rest in, a gazebo by the shore where musicians perform. Covered picnic area by restrooms a great idea. Seems to be the town gathering place, pleasant people who say hello as they pass you. Impressive Ponce de Leon monument, he supposedly anchored along here in 1513 and met hostile Calusa tribe. read more

Nice park to chill. Even to have a barbecue. You can easily take a nap, eat your sandwich and progress to you destination.
