Unfortunately I did not have a good experience at the Violin shop. I had several things done to my…read moreviolin; fingerboard planed, reshaping of the bridge, a little varnish touch up, clean and polish and bow rehair, new leather grip and clean and polish. They had my instrument for over 2 weeks. When I called to check on how much longer to expect the repair they said "oh, yes it's sitting right here all finished". I couldn't believe they didn't call me to tell me it was done! When I came to pick it up they set the case on the floor beside me to go over the bill. I was shocked they didn't open the case and have me play it for the amount of work that was done. I opened the case and gasped when I saw RAW exposed wood on my bow. The new leather grip was placed a bit higher on the bow leaving a spot that was under the old grip raw exposed wood. My heart sank! When I removed to blanket off the violin ALL the strings were completely loose. I don't know how the bridge or sound post was even standing!!! They staff talked to me as if I was a beginner or low intermediate student when I expressed my concern. I paid the $400 bill. When I got home and played it I simply wanted to cry. It sounded terrible as if the sound post had fallen but not properly replaced or possibly the bridge hadn't been reshaped properly. I went to another shop in town Williams Fine Violins to see if they could fix it and the luthier there was able to fix my bow. He also worked with me to adjust the sound post till my violin sounded back to its old self. I don't understand WHY the violin shop didn't have me play it ESPECIALLY if they knew the sound post fell during the repairs!!! I looked up the owner of the violin shop on their website and sent him an email but got NO reply. Save yourself time, money and energy. Go to Williams Fine Violins. They will take good care of you!!

Recently I brought out an older Chinese-made guitar expecting snorts of derision. Another tech had told me it needed all new frets, bridge, and nut. I suspect he just couldn't get the buzz out of a few positions and wanted to be rid of me. The dude behind the counter at Glaser's, played it and then talked to me about my use of the guitar. He then told me, I would likely just need some new strings, and handed it back, no charge! That's service!

So I had to find a new home for all my fiddling needs.  I went to Williams yesterday to get a new set of strings. I'm admittedly dumb and lazy, so I was happy and relieved that not only did they carry my favorite brand, but they also offered to put them on for free. This was one of the reasons I was loyal to my old place because they always put them on for me. I like having an expert restring my fiddle so they can catch any other problems I may be having. It's kind of like getting my oil change. It also allows me some time to daydream and kick some tires.  Williams has a great selection of violins, violas, cellos, and double basses. Lately, I've been interested in electric fiddles. They have a wide selection of those, which I was able to test out, and acoustic amps.  The young lady who took care of me did a great job! She was kind, friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. She did expert work restringing my fiddle. The strings were reasonably priced and sound great!  I think my two fiddles and I have found a new home.

I am a long-time time fan of Gibson guitars. Gibson was started by Orville Gibson in 1902 in Kalamazoo, Michigan as the Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Manufacturing Company. The company is now based in Nashville, Tennessee. Gibson is the guitar of choice for many rockstars. This long list of rockstars include Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, Angus Young of AC/DC, Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath and many more. In the blues world, B.B.King's beloved guitar, "Lucille" is a Gibson. My favorite Gibson guitar by far is the Gibson Les Paul. Yes, it was developed and named for musician Les Paul. All in all, Gibson is an iconic brand and a guitar that I would definitely recommend.

My second stop in Nashville, this little shop seemed inviting when I initially walked in. My…read morefavorite hippy décor for any place that surrounds selling instruments; there were oriental rugs of all different patterns covering the wood floors; and the furniture they had for people to sit and test the instruments paired nicely into shabby chic. These two elements were the only organic entities that brought a sense of charm to this business. Old Time Pickin' Parlor was a far cry from anything that the name would lend itself to. I could tell right away that the people who ran the joint were ready for us to leave as soon as my friend and I walked in. I don't know if they were high on weed and tweaked out or what. All I know is that they barely mumbled a "hello," to greet us; and they practically slammed the door to their in-house recording studio as soon as we passed it walking in. I understand that this kind of equipment is expensive, but clearly we don't look like teens and therefore we're not going to assume that it's there for us to play with; much less think anything in there is for sale. I caught the clerks constantly shifting their eyes back and forth at each other, and they weren't smiling; rather, they were concerned. Did you honestly think we were going to break something or steal? Both of them stood there with their hands in their pockets making no effort to try to talk to us regarding what their shop was about; much less where the name for their business comes from. I could tell the product they had was not just stuff they ordered from a distribution center. Therefore I could only assume the product was expensive. Perhaps the instruments had previous owners, well-known in the industry. They could have at least shared the stories surrounding how they came into possession of their obviously coveted collection. I wouldn't recommend visiting this place unless you were some kind of over-entitled trust fund baby, with a narcissistic hipster attitude, ready to blow your parents' money. I think these guys feel like they shouldn't have to talk to you unless you weigh in starting at this point. I'd love to see the quality of their elevated customer service when concerning a potential buyer. Perhaps had they extended such an inviting attitude and not made assumptions regarding whom my friend and I were; then maybe I would have had a better review to write. Sorry guys, you deserve it. Especially when you're right next to a shop that's part of a major TV Network show. You are going to get clients from all walks of life. If you're burnt out, then you need to sell your shop to someone who can handle the general customer traffic.
