One of the more interesting stops we made on our trip up to Illinois was stopping in Metropolis, where the fascinating story of how this town became "Superman's home" - the fictional city of the same name. We had a great time stopping by and checking out the huge statue, and enjoying the little gift shop adjacent. Definitely something we'd recommend for a stop if you're passing through! DC fans and road trippers alike will enjoy stopping by this interesting and unique place!

It is literally what the name says it is. A GIANT statue of Super Man! The town of Metropolis, IL has definitely embraced the Superman style and this statue is the center of it all!!

Worth seeing the 'Man of Steel' and liked how they put the eclipse glasses on him. Went to 1 of the food trucks ( about 5 there) and they were out of food! Parking on street can be challenging but area appeared safe as police presence were there.

"It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a statue of Superman!" Yes, Metropolis Illinois goes straight for it with Superman Square here in the center of the city next to the Superman Store. There is street parking and you can get your selfie with the Man of Steel himself. I was here ten years ago and it hasn't changed now that I'm back. I brought the same tshirt and I've lost a bunch of weight since then. All good. If you plan ahead, you might be able to find the shirt at a Walmart so you can do it properly. There is a spot next to Superman where you can set up your tripod or maybe you'll luck out and someone else will be here to snap your picture. [Review 16298 overall - 98 in Illinois - 1804 of 2021.]

Fun, cheesy little stop in southern Illinois, along the Kentucky border. This isn't a destination or anything, but worth 10 minutes to a half hour or so if its on your way. It's about three easy, flat miles off the interstate. Kitschy photo ops, a souvenir shop, a game and memorabilia shop, and a few small town offerings like antique shops and eateries. Great addition to a road trip in the Midwest or starting toward Route 66.

Great statue in the town square and this is not even the only giant statue in town. I can't think of any better town, or any better spot to put such a figure. I thought it may be at the city limits but I kept driving and following the signs from the interstate and found it in the only other spot that made sense. This is where the bulk of the activity in town is except for harrahs which is just about 5 blocks away on the waterfront. Of course the Superman gift shops , themed stores and even the metropolis museum celebrating the fictional home of superman is just blocks away so make sure to check those out if coming to town during the day.

How cool is this? This is a real life giant superman statue located right on the corner of Illinois. Who's in the city of Metropolis and in the heart of the city is it in a giant Superman's that you were all to see. I mean I think this is awesome cool idea and definitely get people to come to the city to take photos and explore the town.

Very neat! Has a nice fence around it too to help people stay out of the street while they look at it. It's kind of just in the middle of the road. Two little steps to stand on as well to get a good angle. Fun stop on a road trip.

This is one of my highlights of our trip to Marion . We took a beautiful scenic drive to metropolis to see this giant statue . So much fun and a must do when you are in the area.

This place should be listed as one of the wonders of southern Illinois. Superman stands with authority, as if he's mayor of the town.

While the town doesn't have much, there are a few places to eat, a unique vintage store, and a Superman museum.

Along this area of the Ohio river, the mural walls stretch out about 3 city blocks in length, with over 50 murals telling various stories of the Paducah area. Each is 14 feet high and various widths. There's a lot to learn by studying these gorgeous murals and the accompanying plaques. There are also a number of train cars the line a portion of the mural walls. Being a big fan of trains, I took my time meandering around this steal beats. It's easy to spend over an hour taking it all in. We were there on a weekend and there were a fair amount of people visiting and taking photos. The detail and the artistry for these murals is amazing. It's amazing to think how much time these murals, took, and the fact that they were all done by just two artists. I got educated as well. I had no idea there used to be a Coca-Cola® plant located in Paducah, much less the fact that it was in use for over 100 years! (sadly, it ceased operations in 2005). Visiting the Flood Mural Walls is something I didn't expect when we went to Paducah, but I'm glad we took the time.
