Osteria Broccaindosso - Tagliatelle Al ragu (2nd of the 3 pasta sampler) and the best I've had yet. The ragu was meaty and really flavorful.

Intro: After exploring Bologna to the fullest, we made our way to Osteria Broccaindosso for dinner…read more Located outside of the heart of Bologna, despite being away from the center of the action, the restaurant was almost full. They didn't have any tables outside so we were seated inside. Service (3.5/5): No WiFi unfortunately which isn't great for an international traveler like me. Standard European service. Not terribly friendly and not terribly efficient but I would say they were a bit more attentive than the norm. They did hook us up with some complimentary limoncello shots which was a really nice touch. Ambiance (3.5/5): A little quieter since it's off the beaten path which I like. A pleasant, homey restaurant. Drinks (4.5/5): We shared a bottle of wine. And the aforementioned limoncello shots. Food (4/5): We went with their pasta for two deal where each person gets three different types of pasta that you choose from six or so options. I love getting a variety of dishes so this was a nice way to do it. Not huge portions given the price but still delicious. The dishes were served to us quickly and we got to try some pastas we had never heard of. Overall: When in Bologna, Osteria Broccaindosso makes for a fine choice. It's a 15-minute walk or so from the center of town.

I'm glad we did because it because it was one of the best mid-day meals of our entire two week trip through Italy, Germany and Austria. La Vegana is a small, unassuming restaurant and shop in a quiet neighborhood. There are a few tables for eating in but it appears to me that much of their business is take away and selling vegan grocery items. The menu for the day is written out on a chalk board. We were able to decipher it with no problem but if your Italian is marginal the woman at the counter spoke excellent English and was helpful in making our selections. I ordered ravioli spinaci. It was very good. I ate vegan ravioli three times while in Italy, once when we made it ourselves in a cooking class in Como, then at an upscale vegan restaurant in Venezia, and finally here at La Vegana. The ravioli at La Vegana was not as fancy as at the restaurant in Venezia -- but the taste was just as good. The ravioli we made ourselves was also good -- but we're just beginners when it comes to making pasta. My traveling companions report that they also enjoyed there selections. If you are a vegan and looking for good vegan food in Ferrara, I recommend La Vegana. They open at 11:00am and close at 9:00pm. It is worth seeking out.

This is a large, bustling restaurant and bar in a great location in Ravenna, in the historic…read morecenter. Menu offered a variety of intriguing options including seasonal specials and dishes that made it clear we were in Emilia Romagna. Since there were three of us we were able to sample a variety of dishes and all were very good to exceptional. To start I had the radicchio salad with crispy bacon, companions had the soft cheese budino with crispy parma ham in wine cream, and the parma ham and parmesan cheese salad. Both the salads were so huge (and wonderfully fresh tasting) they could have been a "light" lunch all on their own! The budino was beautiful and tasty as well. It was hard not to keep munching on the warm piadina bread served to the table as well, but we had to save room for our mains. I absolutely adore venison and can't resist ordering it when I see it on a menu. Here they had it in a stew with polenta. Delicious, much like the way I prepare it at home slow-cooked in wine with fresh herbs like rosemary. One companion, after a week of heavy pasta and rice dishes felt drawn to the grilled chicken. As simple as that sounds, it was terrific. I'd love a place back home that made such a flavorful grilled chicken dish. Third main course was the winner of the day, though - the risotto with sausage and radicchio. Perfectly cooked risotto (according to my native Italian dining companion) and rich with autumn flavors. Needless to say, no room was left for dessert. I would definitely come back here and recommend this restaurant as a great place to sample some of the cuisine of this region of Italy. It's not an intimate or romantic choice, but good for a group, especially if you want to sample a variety of dishes.

This wonderful restaurant just steps from the piazza del poppolo is a quiet refined space perfect for a great meal. The interior is housed in an old hat shop where those cabinets now display the wines and provide a very nice backdrop. There is soft piano music playing and the tables are large enough to provide plenty of room for your dishes nor are they packed in. The service is friendly, crisp and professional. The wine list has something for everyone. The bread basket is home made and it shows. We were each given a complementary vegetarian meatball which was very good,We ordered the tortellini with a an aged Parmesan sauce. This is an excellent version of this dish. The tortellini were obviously hand made, cooked perfectly al dente and the flavor worked beautifully with the Parmesan. The veal was perfectly cooked, crispy with the right amount of ham and a nice sauce that fished off the dish. The potatoes were also perfectly cooked and flavored with some rosemary. We tried the tiramisu for dessert. A tiramisu that has been tweaked with a bit more mascarpone and amazing chocolate shavings. Proving a perfect dish can be improved Overall just an excellent experience at a place that hits all the right notes.
