Great pinball tables
Adrian H.

This was my first time in Gestalt in a couple years, and it feels better than it's ever been. I hear it's under new ownership and it feels like it's getting the refresh it needed. Great beers on tap, fun folks in here watching the Super Bowl, bartenders handling the crowd well, and a really nice selection of modern pinball tables that seem like they were set up by someone who really knows what they're doing. My partner got the soju margarita and did *not* like it...so maybe stick to the beers. Black Knight, Mars Attacks, Foo Fighters, Dr No, and - a clean bathroom! A buck for three balls, woohoo! And there's a pool table now. Haven't tried the food, but I'll be back.

Pretzel - 2 stars. Not fresh. I'm pretty sure this was microwaved. This was way too hot when came out. Sat lunch 2018-07-07

I was excited to find another German spot in the Mission, but this is more of a bar. My boyfriend likes their beer options, but they have limited food options. * Pretzel - 2 stars Not fresh. I'm pretty sure this was microwaved. This was way too hot when came out. It also came with a weird fake-looking, but spicy, mustard dip. * Bratwurst - 2.5 stars Not great, bread pretty stale, not very memorable.

Gestalt is actually a branch of psychology which is based on a theory that what people need to do in order to "heal" or "be complete" is to look at the big picture, in which the whole is more than the sum of its parts. So why is this bar called Gestalt, you ask? Answer: I have NO effing idea. It's known for being a hipster beer bar in the Mission where you can hang your bicycle on the wall while downing pints of quality international brews. The walls are red, it has a pool table, and the bathroom is gross. There are some well-worn couches/chairs at the front of the bar, but the music (did I mention the live DJ?) might make it difficult to sit back and read. The bar advertises that it's a great place to watch sporting events, and rocks 4 big screen TVs. They also serve various 'wursts, including a vegetarian bratwurst (welcome to SF!!), so nobody has to go hungry. Drink-wise, they offer 20 beers on tap in additon to a variety of bottled foreign beers, and the bartender will permit you to taste the beers before you buy one. I went with Young's Double Chocolate Stout, which was fantastic. All of my friends enjoyed their draughts, served up in fancy glasses. Prices are generally in the $5-$6 range. This Gestalt definitely has a lot of parts, but I'm not sure that it makes a cohesive whole.

Fairly chill bar in the mission Most bars in the area has a hipster vibe, and this place is no exception! Pinball machines, retro lamps, graffiti on the walls are all part of the decor. The crowd is also young and somewhat hipster, but in general the place is fairly open. The doors are wide open, and it certainly feels like anyone walking by can just swing in for a quick drink. The waitstaff is pretty friendly as well. A good place to swing by whenever happen to walk by.

Their sweetest cider. Just ask for that. I don't know its name.

Ended a fun night here! It was nice and low key at 1am on a Saturday/Sunday so plenty of seating. Enjoyed how colorful the place was, maybe it was the dim lighting? They have TVs and a big screen playing the most random things. I saw clowns, a person being tied up, and whales. So. No need to take anything to feel like you're high lol. They also have three arcade type games here. Did not play but looked cool, possible free? Since we got in so late (or early?) the kitchen was closed. But I'd come back next time for some andouille sausage or a pretzel, or both. I had a sweet cider and my friend just picked some beers, chill end to the late night!

This place is a nice bar to come to & just hang out. They have good beer selection, food, board games, and pin ball machines! I ordered their spicy link hotdog and it was good, but unfortunately my bread fell apart as soon as I look my first bite. Regardless, I finished it and the link was delicious.

Tasty lunch.

Very please to find this institution open for pick up in these trying times. I got a tasty sausage Sando and a cold bowl of water for my pup. Well worth the drive from San Francisco will be back for more.

They have some pretty awesome pinball machines here. The music selection was also good. I can't say much for the food or the drinks.

I've now been twice in the past few months and consider this part of my regular bar rotation in SF. My favorite thing about The Summer Place is the way they deck the halls for holidays. I'm a sucker for a good themed bar, or a bar that isn't afraid to dress itself up for holidays or special occasions (we have plenty of speakeasies and upscale cocktail lounges, y'all - bring back some of the kitsch!). And The Summer Place definitely hits that mark. For Halloween, they had a ton of Nightmare Before Christmas decor adorning every square inch of the interior real estate. It's a relatively small bar, so seating or standing areas may be tough to come by on crowded nights, but if you hang around, something seems to usually open up. The drinks are all fun and pretty good too - nothing too crazy, but consistently enjoyable and creative, with prices that won't break the bank. We tried just about every drink on their Halloween menu, from Oogie Boogie's Bog Water to Worm Wort, and found them all quite good. The servers have all been very kind and really contribute to the fun atmosphere. This is one of those bars that feels like a true neighborhood haunt, where everyone is a regular and knows each other. So if you're looking for a fun, mildly chaotic, quintessential neighborhood bar experience with good drinks and a great energy in the Tendernob area, The Summer Place is your place!

I wish I could remember the bartender's name because we had a great conversation, but he was so sweet, welcoming, and treated me like a local/regular. He made me a delicious lemon drop and I went upstairs to one of the tables at the front window to people-watch the street below and catch up on all the many text messages I haven't sent back. It's a quirky, colorful, fun dive bar with 2 levels, the upstairs being kind of a balcony that wraps around the whole area. They don't serve food, but they do accept cards now... I saw in other reviews that it used to be cash only. As the night went on, they dimmed the lights and played upbeat club/dance music with party lights. I still had a good time just chilling, but it would be a fun place to get turned up or dance with friends, too. I'll definitely be back here! It's good San Francisco character and vibes!

The atmosphere, although sometimes loud, is quite chill and inviting. This is also a cool stop to make if you are on a date; especially if you head upstairs to the seating on the mezzanine. I haven't been back here since the late 1990's-early 2000's, when I was a club kid coming up from the suburbs to party late into the night in the Folsom, SOMA, TL, Nob Hill, & Castro neighborhoods. I believe that it used to be called the Arrow Bar? And the venerable Tu Lan is still next door. Everything else around here has seriously gone downhill... open drug usage, unhoused, unstable, and just plain derelict & bizarre behavior & people going on in front of this bar. But, if you can wade through the depressing sea of inhumanity out front, the Rumpus Room is your sanctuary for good drinks, great music, cool/divy ambiance, and a crowd that just wants to have fun, drink, and party! Outside, sure it's not much. You'll have to pass by the saddest sights, but once you cross the threshold that is the front door, you are greeted by some sweet music, a long packed bar, ambient lighting, and some mighty comfortable stools. The bartenders here are friendly, social, engaging, composed, chill, and just plain nice, despite this place being super busy, crowded, and on the verge of being overwhelmed. The music being played here is probably better than the concert that I'm about to attend. Always cutting edge, sometimes metal, sometimes electronica, sometimes indy, always on point. The bar itself is clean, comfortable, cozy, and a great place to pre-game before heading to a concert. They even post showtimes & tell you who is going on & when at the Warfield, so you can time your drinking according to when you want to leave to see your favorite bands. The drinks here are great. The list is extensive & awesome. All of my favorites of beers, ciders, IPA's, hazys, seltzers, lagers, stouts, ales, and booze. I tried their house Mule, and now I'm addicted. It is pre-made and poured from a tap, but it is so delicious. I usually end up having 3-4. Their other cocktails like the Paloma, Old Fashioned, It'll Do, and Whiskey Smash are all amazing too. I could drink here all night, but I'm in town to see a show, so parting is bittersweet & hard to do. The bartenders, bar backs, and even fellow drinkers are all amazing here. Everyone is here to have fun, is super nice, and downright chill. The space is clean, it's roomy, there's even an upstairs, and the bathroom isn't as noxious as most dive bars can be. Love this bar, will be back every time we come to the area for music, arts, entertainment, or amusement. No excuse needed to head to Rumpus Room before going anywhere else around mid-Market, this place is amazing, fun, safe, and satisfying. Get your drink on here before doing anything else around SF.
