Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory - Milan Chapel

Opinion of Jeff Taraschke. Recently my family chose Groff Funeral home in Milan, OH to lay my…read morefather to rest. I am sorry to say the services provided by Groff Funeral home staff were an unmitigated disaster in virtually every aspect. Starting with the obituary the funeral home staff published inappropriate and factually inaccurate information, that was not agreed upon by the family in the obituary. Two of the family members named in the obituary called them to remove the false information and advise the staff the information was not agreed upon. The funeral home staff refused to change the information. The manager explained since our mother approved the wording of the obituary and she was financially responsible for paying for their services they would not remove the information from their website they knew was false. The manager made it clear she only cared about money and she did not care how much distress it caused the rest of the family. The manager did offer to publish a second obituary (for an additional fee of course) to correct the lies they published, but I had to call back later for the price. When I called back later for the price, the staff member who answered the phone used the opportunity to berate me and tell me how offended she was that I would ask to have the inaccurate information removed. When my family arrived for my father's viewing my father's casket was open. While preparing my father for the service the funeral home staff drastically altered the appearance of my father so much, so he had no resemblance to the man who I was with days before when he passed away. It is understood some change in appearance occurs after death, However, I would later learn my father's drastic change in appearance was a tell-tale sign of a botched preparation, failure to follow industry standard, and / or cost cutting measures by the funeral home. In this case, the entire family agreed my father was so horribly disfigured by the funeral home staff, we had to make the decision to close the casket. Additionally, for the viewing, hundreds of friends and relatives came to show respect to my father and family. The reception line stretched out the door and down the block. The funeral home staff was completely unprepared and provided absolutely no organization. Van loads of mourners who traveled over an hour from Cleveland were forced to leave without paying their respects to my father and our family due to the funeral homes staff lack of preparation. The following day, the funeral service for my father was also "standing room only". Again, the funeral home staff stood around and did absolutely nothing as family members and pal bearers scoured the church to find and set up folding chairs for the overflow of guest causing a delay in the service. As part of the funeral home "services" they offered to broadcast the funeral service for my father on Facebook Live for mourners who were unable to attend the service in person. Unfortunately, even this was ruined by funeral home staff. The camera broadcasting the service was pointed in the wrong direction for the entire service. During most of the broadcast all you can see was my fathers closed casket and an empty lectern. Funeral home staff made no effort to correct the technical difficulties. You could not see any of the family members speaking about our father and of course the sound quality was horrible so you can barely hear anything which was said. Finally, throughout this entire ordeal not a single member of the funeral home staff spoke to me even once or offered their condolences on the loss of my father (his only son). I urge you to consider what I have shared and use another funeral home to avoid these money-grubbing and unprofessional shysters.
