This has probably been one of the best things to hit Panzer in a long time. Two years ago, I wrote an ICE complaint, detailing the need for a restaurant on base which serves breakfast. Yes, Burger King and Charley's serve breakfast, but they aren't restaurant, nor are they really any good.
The Kantine re-opened in April 2015 under new management, and the change has been immediate and welcome. The owners and service staff are friendly and take pride in the food they serve and the ambiance in the restaurant. In December 2015, the Kantine held a Christmas cookie decorating event, which was outstanding. The staff not only put the event on, they took the time to help the kids decorate, bake, and eat the cookies...not something you'll find in Charley's or Burger King.
As far as breakfast, you aren't going to find a better breakfast on Panzer or in a 5 miles radius; Cafe Shilling gives it a run for its money (read my review). The omelets are as big as your head, the breakfast burritos will leave you feeling full until dinner, and the daily breakfast specials are a nice way to breakup the menu. Oh, besides the portions, the breakfast is tasty and rivals any breakfast joint in the states. Most important to me, the coffee is hot, good, and plentiful.
You can't go wrong with lunch here as well. You have your run-in-the-mill German lunches (schnitzel, brats, currywurst, et al), as well as a few American favorites. You also have the daily lunch specials, so when you get tired of schnitzel (not sure why you would), you can mix it up with the daily specials. Again, the portions and the taste are outstanding, two things which are integral to any good restaurant. I have yet to come back from lunch hungry or feeling like I made a bad decision (thank you Burger King).
So the prices must be expensive, right? Nope! The prices are comparable to what you would pay in the states for a good breakfast and lunch. They don't take credit cards, so bring your Euro or Dollars. But, this is one of the few places where I don't swear under my breath that they don't take credit cards. There are two ATMs within 100 yards of the Kantine, so no excuse for not having cash.
Bottom line, this restaurant is one of the shining spots here at Panzer. The quality, portions, and price of the food is better than you'll find off or on base. The owner and service staff also sets this place above any place in recent memory (again, Cafe Shilling gives it a run for its money). Not only are they nice to the customers, they are nice to my kids when they come in, which is a HUGE deal for me. My only regret with the German American Kantine is they don't serve dinner! read more
