I do want to say that I know she tried very hard to help my son. I also think she probably is a…read morereally good with younger children. I sought counseling really to be proactive due to a traumatic and somewhat prolonged separation from my then soon to be teen son. I wanted to make sure he was able to process everything and could feel safe to honestly express any anger or other issues that may have come up. The first few visits were ok. After that things got complicated. She began putting words in my sons mouth and even when he openly expressed that he did not relate to what she was saying she continued to insist he was just not comfortable being honest. This made my son begin to doubt her but he wanted to continue to see if there was anything she could teach him. The next visit went ok but unlike before, he insisted I go into the session with him and we played games. There were another session or two like this and then she basically told me that he seemed very well rounded and he is a good kid and seems to have a good head on his shoulders so I really should t worry too much. At a later appointment things just got very bizarre as she would tell us to wait in the car and then when she was ready for us to come in she would open the back door and text us when she was ready. At this particular visit for some reason she chose not to text when she was ready and my son and I were talking and failed to notice her standing at the back door trying to get our attention. She was very upset by this and basically told me that obviously my son did not want to be there bc otherwise he would have paid better attention and that as an adult I should be more considerate of her time. At a later appointment she tried to provoke my son so that he would "admit how he truly felt" and my son did get angry bc he felt she was not listening to him or understanding at all but he wasn't going to argue with her he just shut down. When I tried to help her understand his position she tried to make light of it as if it was a specific technique and she laughed it off. Neither of us was amused. After that we had one more session but my son told me and we discussed with her that we think we have gotten everything we can out of therapy at this time. She insisted we have at least a few more sessions spaced out before just ending therapy. Reluctantly my son agreed. The last appointment I was unable to attend due to work so my mom took him and at that session she apparently told my son that he was oppositionally defiant and was at high risk of a conduct disorder and that was beyond the scope of her care and said she wouldn't see him any more he needed to go to ACCESS. I got a voicemail from her following the appointment where she sounded almost hysterical and advising me to take him to access and not bring him back to her. All in all it was a very disconcerting experience. We never knew what to expect going in and while the experience was not all bad I wouldn't want to do it again.
