When I contacted FreightWorldWide to ask them about this, they mentioned that they received the boxes in horrible condition and they packed them that way. Since the boxes were in perfect condition when they were picked up by TNT, somehow, somewhere in transit between the TNT pickup and the delivery to the UK, these boxes were mishandled and several items were broken. I am in the midst of making a formal complaint against the driver that did the pickup. I just moved back to Canada from Palma de Mallorca after 4 years in Spain. Never in my life have I encountered someone who actively refused to do their job. Not in Canada, nor in Spain. I don't know if this driver was just lazy, but he was completely unhelpful, stating that he did not want to move the boxes himself. FreightWorldWide contracted TNT Spain to collect my shipment to deliver it to the UK so it could be put on the ship to Canada. The TNT driver, from Palma de Mallorca, refused to collect the 26 boxes unless they were moved from the 3rd floor to the main lobby. I had to hire 2 men to do this and pay them 100 Euros in order to have my personal items shipped via TNT to the UK. And even after the boxes were moved to the lobby, he refused to load them onto his own truck and had both men do it for them, threatening to leave them there if they did not do the work for him. What I fail to understand is that the driver should have had notice and/or the paperwork that gave him the details of this pickup. He should have known that he was to pickup 26 boxes. I also fail to understand why I was to print out the invoices to give to the driver. These are TNT invoices and they should have given it to the driver at the start of his day. This pickup was discussed with TNT for several days as I tried to arrange pickup while I was in transit to Canada. I took pictures of some of the badly damaged boxes and I also have pictures of the damaged items. I worked as a courier for 2 years and drove a cube van to deliver and receive shipments of boxes from customers outside of the city. I am fully aware of how damages can happen and how to prevent them as a courier and as a customer. If what FreightWorldWide says is true, then TNT is responsible for the damages to the boxes and the items inside. Some of the boxes had rips that allowed items to hang outside of the boxes. Freightworldwide could have tried to repair those boxes but just decided to shrinkwrap them on the pallets regardless of the damages. As a courier, I would not have let this happen. As FreightWorldWide is the main contractor, I am dealing with them for damages. Both FreightWorldWide and myself are saying that TNT is responsible for the damages to the shipment. I can accept that and look to making some sort of agreement on compensation. I also wan't to make sure that the TNT driver is dealt with. As I have said already, I have never seen such behaviour in a courier before. The complete lack of professionalism is shocking. I will be sending a copy of this email to everyone I possibly can at TNT to make sure that my complaint is heard and I expect this driver to be dealt with. His actions, or lack of actions, cost me money that was completely unnecessary to spend.
