I came here for one day and never went back. All they do is give worksheets and lecture you. No interactive activities. DBT can be all worksheets but it can also be interactive without worksheets. It felt like school, not therapy. People were on their phones and one person was studying for their EMT exam. That's how bad it was. ok so it's been quite some time since experiencing this place - two times - back in 2012. i think the had just opened their facility in florham park (i see they have moved to a livingston location). most of everything that's being mentioned for those who gave this place 1 start...... they are on point. you have two rooms - one CBT and another for DBT. all others rooms are the offices for the therapists and i recall one for the psychiatrist. DBT.... i still have nightmares of going into that room with the others. when the therapist said i would be better off in DBT.... i got sick to my stomach. this place all in all is one big trigger for me. they are the definition of one of the least helpful outpatient rehab. you come out just as you came in... and sometimes maybe a bit more eschewed to put it lightly. it's honestly a pleasure to see how far this place has come since 2012..... seems like no change. read more

I am in crisis and they abandoned me. Saying that I missed seeing my provider in 3 months I must start new and can't see me for a month. I am suicidal and they wouldn't help me. GenPsych Livingston itself was not bad. If you or anyone you know has an eating disorder, do not send them here. The program was very disorganized. The therapist did more harm than good. He was extremely shaming and didn't know what he was doing. There was no meal plan that we had to follow which can be extremely dangerous for someone who is struggling. There was no discharge in place either nor any therapy set up for after (IOP). Very unimpressed. read more

Going to the Livingston GenPsych was one of the best things I have ever done for myself - if not the best thing I have ever done for myself. The therapists there are incredible - Julie, Charlotte, Mike, Kayla, Eric are all fantastic, incredible people who have changed so many lives including my own. They truly care. The office receptionist, Provy, is a queen and a kind, friendly face who instantly makes you feel safe and the security guard, Max, is a gem as well. Stay away. The incompetence and total lack of patient care here is astounding. We are using them to manage the MENTAL HEALTH medication of a TWELVE YEAR OLD CHILD. First, the have a nonstop revoloving door of providers. No one ever stays more than a few months. Next when a provider leaves and you have an appointment with that provider, NO ONE reaches out to let you know that provider has left or to move your care. You simply show up for appointments where no one shows up. They never follow up to get you moved to a new provider and when you call you are always told the person who can help you is assisting other people and to leave a voicemial. - a voicemail no one will respond to. They are risking patients' mential health and stability and show little regard for that. You have follow up over and over and basically raise hell to get anyone to help you. read more

Do not send your kids here, there was one great therapist there doing all the work. My daughter did not receive proper treatment nor guidance. The director of the facility and most of the staffing is unequipped to support proper treatment. The Schooling program cannot follow the school guided work to have your child be successful. I'm sorry we ever gave this place a chance. When things get tough all the director wants to do is quickly remove from program. I wanted to alert you to a mental health and substance use organization that has kept thousands of dollars from its 1099 Contracted Virtual Therapists. The organization is GenPsych and it currently has nine offices in New Jersey. I am a Licensed Social Worker who worked there as a 1099 employee for four months. I resigned, after needing to beg for my paychecks on their due dates. I have not been paid since my resignation and have only been paid for nine out of the 55 sessions I had while employed with GenPsych. I am owed thousands of dollars. Sadly, I am not alone. This is common practice for GenPsych. This is an organization in the business of saving lives by providing mental health and substance use services through its invaluable Clinicians. One of the most challenging problems Clients have with their mental health services is lack of consistency in Clinicians. The turnover rate is high. Sadly, GenPsych continues this cycle by not only harming their employees, but creating even more challenges and struggles for their clients. I am motivated to obtain my pay, but more so for the unethical practices this organization has been able to get away with. My son has been going here for a few months. I can definitely say he has shown great improvement in his temperament. Things that would make him angry and upset, he now has the coping skills to figure out on his own the best corse of action for him. Everyone involved with his care are absolutely outstanding people. They treat him very well, and listen to him. He was having some issues at school, not feeling like they were listening to him, but at GenPsych anytime he would speak, whoever he was talking to would stop what they were doing and listen to him. And we all know a 9 year old can talk. I have had nothing but positive interactions with all the staff and do recommend if you need a place to go for help or a family member needs the help then GenPsych is definitely a place to go. The only thing I could ask for would be better communication throughout the staff. Like when I got permission for him to work from home one day, the people running the youth group didn't seem to know that he was going to be from home. They will bill you late if you are patient and slam you with a bill for hundreds to thousands of dollars because payroll and billing departments are incompetent. I began my treatment with GenPsych in their outpatient program and once completed, I was placed with an outpatient psychiatrist, Dr. Oyem, to manage my medications moving forward. Since then, my experience has been horrible. I currently have been without my anti-depressant medication for over 1 week because it is absolutely impossible to reach the doctor unless you have an appointment, which is rarely even with himself to begin with. At the end of my appointments, I am told that my medications will be sent to my pharmacy right away. They pick and choose what medications to send to the pharmacy and which ones to give you a hard time about. The doctor changed the dosage of one of my medications and never told me, I found out at the pharmacy. I have been calling their office for 1 week now and every one of them insist that all they can do is email the doctor and hope for a response to approve the medication refill (which should have been sent at my last appointment, but wasn't). Dr. Oyem's "assistant", Saidin Ubpon, is worse. He is not helpful, at all, extremely rude, and he hung up on me during a phone call of me practically begging for them to send my medication to the pharmacy. They will not allow me to speak to a manager, as they insist that this is not something the manager deals with and this can only be handled by the doctor himself. This is the THIRD time that Dr. Oyem and his staff have withheld medication from me. Please save what's left of your mental sanity and health and stay away from this place. read more

They completely lied to a family member about a certain treatment Program and then refused to change the Therapist when her Therapist turned out to be under-qualified and had ZERO work experience. Unfortunately this organization is one of a few that will treat teenagers with eating disorders. Our daughter's health declined after eight weeks of increasingly intense care, with the last four weeks being 6 hours per day. Our daughter "learned" far more "triggering" foods and behaviors while in group therapy and accelerated her weight loss despite intense focus on eating meals and snacks at home. The dietician indicated that an Ensure drink, 350 Calories, is a "good meal replacement", which could not be further from the truth. Generally speaking, the counselors seemed to be "mailing it in" without genuine individual care for the patient.....however, I did receive a phone call and email demanding payment within 3 days of the statement being created, it had not even reached my mailbox before they were calling to demand payment. We pulled our daughter out of the center and are working with her at home, its more than a part time job, but it's far better than what is offered at GenPsych. read more

We had a great experience at GenPsych Livingston. My 11-year-old daughter was hospitalized at the beginning of the summer because she was struggling with severe depression and anxiety issues and had become a danger to herself. As you can imagine, my wife and I were totally heartbroken. But she got better in the hospital and when she was discharged the doctors recommended GenPsych. What we liked is that they have a holistic approach to the therapy for the kids, which included art therapy, music therapy, mindfulness, and other mechanisms for coping. (Of course we try to do these things at home, but sometimes it clicks better when they hear it from other adults!) At any rate, the doctor was very good with our daughter, as was the rest of the staff. Our daughter made good progress through the summer and was discharged in time to start school. In all respects we found GenPsych Livingston to be clean, professional, cheerful, and a safe place for our daughter to work on her issues. Highly recommended. read more

I would give negative starts if I could. I was bounced around from psychologist to psychologist. One was walking around her house on her cell phone while talking to me as I just looked at her chin and ceiling. Another had her child in the video just repeating "mommy...mommy...mommy". I understand childcare is difficult, but when you are working with someone's mental health, that person needs to be the priority. There was no interest in listening to anything I had to say - I would often have to repeat basic things about my life such as what I did for a living, who I lived with, etc. It was starting from the beginning at every session. The therapist would literally just read a questionaire and record my answers. I often felt like they were just looking at a menu deciding what to get for lunch or dinner as I was speaking. And these calls would literally be under 5 minutes. Tell me you are only in this for the paycheck without telling me you are only in this for the paycheck. read more

My father was set up for medication management after leaving a recovery program. He received his intake appointment via telehealth which is fine. The provider did not really listen to him and he kept needing to repeat himself. He was prescribed a medication while in recovery house that the provider never heard of and therefore refused to prescribe it to him. She then asked for him to schedule an appointment for a 2 week follow up. Genpsych was impossible to schedule this with, as no one answers the phone. He was in danger of being without his medication but thankfully we found a different provider (NOT genpsych) that he will be able to get connected with. Definitely do not recommend genpsych if you want an attentive provider Edit to add: we left messages and no one returned our calls for weeks. Very unprofessional staff. read more

There is an upstairs and downstairs to the building. Bottom floor is for people with issues and the upstairs for people with more serious problems. They will tell you that they are separated; which is true to a point. However, what we didn't know is that everyone is combined in the SAME group counseling sessions together, which can be a traumatic experience, a real eye opener, or give new food for thought so to speak. I felt our 3 Specialists diagnosis (which was the same diagnosis), didn't matter. GenPsych came up with their own diagnosis (totally different) and started treatment (medication, etc.). Had adverse reactions to meds. If your child is under the age of 18, and you sign their contract, you need to question how much of your rights as a parent, are you signing away. read more

I had never been in therapy before, and I work in the field, so I had a difficult time engaging in the beginning for concern of being recognized, and a feeling of being ashamed. My counselor Felicia was so instrumental in helping me to break out of my shell and work with my feelings and thoughts. I truly believe that my experience not only benefited me and my family, but it will further benefit clients of mine in the future. In addition, my experience with GenPsych has given me the courage to not hide in my difficulties, but to embrace them and encourage others to open up about their own struggles with mental and emotional well-being. read more

To be blunt and honest, I have been treated by multiple mental health physicians since 1993, and I must say that my overall care and experience with GenPsych and Veronica Adeoye have been the worst I have ever experienced. Caring for mental health issues is terrible enough via Telehealth. Still, they have found ways to make it worse by over-booking their physicians and forcing patients into timeslots for appointments that are far too short to accomplish anything that approaches meaningful care. read more

With limited choices for care of a minor for depression, we are currently being followed on telehealth. Since the onset, we have had challenges with scheduling, getting return phone calls, follow up on medication changes and general care. I am not sure what is going on but a mental health office should have more accountability for its staff to at the very least do the bare minimum of their job which means responding to emails, calls, texts regarding the care of a minor. They advertise themselves as Premier - appears to be false advertising to me. read more

UPDATE: On Thursday after I posted this review (on a Tuesday), I finally received a phone call back from Catreisha, about and hour before my new psychiatrist appointment. She made several excuses as to why it was a week since I had heard from the office (she doesn't check her voicemails, someone else does, she did get the emails but didn't respond, etc etc) and that she finally checked with the pharmacy and had the prescription called in. Quite honestly, she seemed annoyed and that she was calling out of obligation, presumably because the office had seen the reviews I left. I had her cancel my follow up appointment as I had a new psychiatrist. For reference, I had originally made my appointment because I believed I have ADHD and suffer from PMDD. Dr. Akinyemi said that while I scored high on the ADHD assessment, what I really had was bipolar disorder and the medication she prescribed was a bipolar medication. After my appointment with my new psychiatrist (Ashley from Jersey Medical Care), I was informed that I was absolutely misdiagnosed by Dr. Akinyemi, and that being on bipolar medication when what I really have is ADHD and PMDD could have been detrimental and actually caused more harm than good. She informed me that bipolar disorder does not align with my cycle at all and the symptoms I was describing were classic ADHD and PMDD. She prescribed a daily medication for ADHD and set me up with a protocol for my PMDD. The staff at Jersey Medical worked quickly to get preauthorization from my insurance with zero legwork having to be done on my part. I was able to start my new regimen immediately and quite honestly, I feel 100000x better and more functional since starting it a few weeks ago. Dr. Akinyemi clearly has a bias against ADHD, as a friend of mine with ADHD had a similarly negative appointment with her, to which she complained to GenPsych about and was told that Dr. Akinyemi was the only doctor available to her currently. My friend also went with Jersey Medical, got an appointment quickly, and had a wonderful experience with her doctor and the staff. In retrospect, thank goodness the bipolar medication was never called in as it led me to get a proper diagnosis from a much better mental health office. Everything happens for a reason. I would absolutely suggest you look elsewhere if you're struggling with your mental health. On Wednesday May 11, I finally had my zoom appointment with Dr. Akinyemi after waiting over a month for my appointment. Although she was over fifteen minutes late to the appointment and was a bit short at the start (I have three little kids and they were being uncooperative at the time), she was able to give me a diagnosis, explain it in a way I understood, and outlined what treatment would look like. She was to call in a prescription to my pharmacy. After several hours and me checking in with the pharmacy on the status of the prescription and an email to her, I was finally able to get Catriesha (the doctor's administrative assistant) on the phone. She informed me that my paperwork was not submitted (it was, I submitted via Kipu Messenger as directed and have triple checked it) and they therefore did not have my pharmacy on file. I gave her the pharmacy information for her to call in the prescription and she told me she would resend the forms through email and just to get them back to her at my convenience. I never received the paperwork, nor was my prescription called in to the pharmacy. I spent Thursday and Friday calling the pharmacy, calling and emailing Catriesha, and when I received absolutely no response to any of my voicemails or emails, sent an email to GenPsych on Saturday. No response. It is now Tuesday morning. Still no calls or emails from Catriesha or any other representative from GenPsych , nor has my prescription been called in. This is an unacceptable standard level of care. I have since made an appointment with another psychiatrist as GenPsych clearly is unreliable and does not care in the slightest about their patients' wellbeing. read more

They treat the kids as paychecks and use scare tactics to enroll clients. There is one actual doctor on-site, who they said is "over-subscribed" and so a nurse practitioner "the provider" manages the medication for the kids. I was sent to East Orange, I thought for sitting next to a black woman. The nurse practitioner yelled at me not to shop around. She told me not to take other medications that worked and would not collect them. This is an expensive outpatient where most wear handbags and brag about what they have. My copayment was 1800 and the billing maxed out my insurance. When the billing maxes out they kick you out otherwise I heard they have frequent fliers where they see the same people again. It was hard to be there 10AM-1PM with the hours and it was hard with the billing of $55 per day. I had a problem where I was hearing voices and doing what they said. The therapist said not to talk to the nurse practitioner about getting the hallucinations and voices to stop and not to reveal anything to her. I was yelled at in class to avoid politics which is hard since I watch World Nightly News with David Muir and used to watch the news alot. The nurse practitioner wouldnt change the medication from Newark Beth Israel, Seroquel and Abilify. She said she wanted to observe how I got with the group. The therapist was against me going back to school which the group wanted and just said outpatient. She said I wouldn't be able to last. In the groups they asked how far I was getting in going back to school one student said accounting was too hard. We had an overbillling problem where they charged for days I didn't show. My mom had a court case and the nurse practitioner just expected me to meet with her late when I had the court case down south. In groups you're not allowed to talk about things like medications you are taking or ask what other people are doing. I dressed up with urine on my dress because of the voices and the nurse practitioner wanted me to buy new things and so did the therapist. They are big on shopping but they did not understand I could not afford. I got sneakers for them from Kohls and spent $20 but they got dirty walking the dog with my father so I put them in the washing machine and the sneakers fell apart. The girls were big on designer handbags and expensive phones, it's Livingston. They were big on drawing or coloring. It was hard because it's all a young group of 20s and 30s and a lot of them make fun or harass when I was there so they say not to share much. read more

my teenage daughter has been attending group therapy with GenPsych for 5 months for anxiety and depression. The "academic" portion of the program (silvergate) is nothing like the description on their website or that they provide you during consultation. It is essentially a tutor who sits on zoom with a group that is working on homework they got from their schools. She would have to google for answers, absolutely no teaching involved. For the therapy part, my daughter is very quiet and doing group over zoom can be intimidating and was told she was not participating enough. she did improve and then had a major setback. i communicated with her therapist that she was not doing well and having more frequent anxiety attacks and could not leave the house. Their response was to discharge her because of lack of participation!! No one ever tried to help her. No one ever called me i was notified via email that she was done. Extremely unprofessional and did not do many of the things they said they would do when we signed up. When i questioned it i was ignored. I have contacted other mental health professionals and they are shocked the way my daughter was treated. She is worse now than when she started the program. read more

I went to GenPsych in November for detox and they were very good to me. The only thing you have to do is be open and receptive to the help that is being offered. I left after two weeks, came home and participated in intensive outpatient treatment. Unfortunately, after 62 days clean I relapsed but I can say that I straightened up again and have been clean and sober 106 days and GenPysch was the catalyst that began my recovery. It's an everyday process but I'm living clean and clear. read more

RUN -- the worst place for mental health esp medicine - you do NOT see a shrink but an APN ( Advanced Practice NURSE ) ... She said I have to see them each month online to get my Klonopin that I take to sleep ( chronic ptsd / anxiety ) She said it is a NJ LAW * In AZ my doctor would give me a 6 month supply and I would pick it up each month at the pharmacy* I am 65 been on it for over 15 yrs - the only thing I have taken that keeps the nightmares away ... Had a nice lady there that said she would give me 3 mo supply if she could but they will not let her - said has to be once a month visit on zoom - she QUIT ... great way to make our health insurance pay $$$$$ .... So this one tells me that I should go on Zoloft -- told her I can NOT take SSRI's ... so then she says * Lexapro - omg it is an SSRI .... then says for my ptsd should be on * minipress which can be a urinary retention ... I have EDEMA which I need a WATER pill for not a pill to hold My urine ** Why change medication that helps me so well ? ** why have to see me once a month .... Then she would NOT even put her camera on so I could see her on zoom today as she said it was not working good but last month when I could not get my zoom camera to work she kept yelling at me to turn it on -- so I had to hang up on my computer and call back on my cell phone ! read more

I was referred to Genpsych for DBT therapy and I am currently in the program. I wish I had been referred sooner. The thoroughness of the program: they handle insurance so you don't have to worry about it, individual therapy, group therapy and medication management is all under one roof, so the therapists and doctor all know what's going on and there is good communication among the staff. The caring of the staff: From the receptionist, to the insurance coordinator, to the group facilitators, doctor and therapists. There's a 24/7 help line that doesn't go to some random answering service. It goes to one of the therapists you see every day. They remember details. What you told them last time, to the smallest detail. Any psychiatrist I've been to has to pull up my file on the computer and have me "refresh their memory". The quality of the program: they know what they're doing. Everyone here is a master at what they do and communicate the knowledge and skills in a way you can understand and apply to your situation. It's so different than just reading a self help book. The feedback from other group members: I wasn't sure what to expect from the group. I am pleasantly surprised to be surrounded by insightful, intelligent people who give great feedback and care because they relate to your situation. Very supportive. I am so glad I'm in this program. The other patients seem to feel the same way. It's a well kept secret. read more

I am in the adult DBT program program in Livingston. This is my third week and I can honestly say this program has saved my life. The therapists are fantastic. Where people can get stuck is that this is not a magic fix all, you have to work HARD. Luckily, the therapists and the environment motivates, educates, and supports you to be able to do that hard work. I think the negative reviews are from patients who need a higher level of care, such as a residential or inpatient treatment. If someone is a danger to themself or caused outbursts GenPsych is not the place for you. Outpatient treatment gives you support, not safety. read more
