It was 930pm... what the hell was going on?! The next day I went back curious to find out what went on at this place or whether I was just a lot drunker than I first thought. But sure enough, there was The Spin Room - a gym dedicated to stationary biking. I have always loved spin class at my local gym and decided to give it a whirl. Let me tell you, these guys will kick your arse and have you "seeing the light" by the end of the class. The instructors are so passionate about biking that it really makes you want to get out and spend money on a brand new mountain bike just so you can join them on their adventures. If biking is your thing, then you will love The Spin Room. But be warned: the classes are tough (or perhaps I'm just incredibly unfit.)

The only bad thing I would say is that their promotions are scams. I got a text offering membership for $15.50 a week. When I went in it was $22 a week. Oh and no windows in the building means it's pretty stinky. They need some Glade Sensations or something. But nonetheless, you can always jump on a machine as there are heaps. There are also no burly muscle guys being weirdos in the corner which is great as that is what usually deters me from joining a unisex gym. Opening hours are also good - until 10pm! Means I can finish work late and still make it.

The class is different each time (definitely not Bikram!), and both the sanskrit and common names for poses are used. The instructor moves between students and helps with poses, uses fun - though low-energy - tunes, and offers multiple options for different skill levels (as an arm-balance newbie, I really appreciate an atmosphere that encourages development while doesn't judge newer or less-strong students). Honestly, one of the best yoga classes I've ever been to!

Because of this it took me quite a while to actually go in. a few laps past the windows to look in to see the equipment they have available and the membership prices. One night I couldn't sleep - one of the hot sticky nights that sleep just doesn't want to come - so I thought to myself that now is the best possible time to go and try it out. The gym layout is styled on those west coast US gyms you see in the movies. With more equipment than you can imagine - weight training, cardio fitness, boxing and more - I just wanted to run on the treadmill for a few hours. Afterwards the fully stocked Pro Shop for all your training supplement requirements,and what's better is the coffee shop found even closer than you'd expect. Now I guess I'll never sleep. The membership is not the cheapest if you're a "every now and then" kinda gym user but if it's a 4-6 day a week thing this is definitely for you.

Bayfit Leisure is a gym complete with two large swimming pools. It has been renovated / remodelled…read morein the past couple of years, so has a nice, modern interior. The main gym room is large, with heaps of cardio equipment (I'd guess about 20 treadmills, a similar number of bikes / cross-trainers), stacks of pin-loaded equipment and a smaller free-weights area. It has a smallish stretching room adjoining the main gym, modern locker / change rooms with showers. Gym instructors are friendly and helpful. The pools are impressive, all indoor but with a lot of glass on either end of the building to provide plenty of natural light. The main pool is a 50m lap pool, the other is shallower and more suited to kids. There is a small steam room and spa / hot tub for gym users. The gym also includes a large aerobic room that hosts many spin and Les Mill's classes throughout the week. Cost-wise, you're looking at about $900 per year without special offers / discounts, which come along every so often. Overall I have been very impressed by this gym, one of the best in the area IMHO.

The cost of a 20 session pass for a student works out just over $5 per session - Session passes can be used at all Yarra city leisure centres (Burnley, Collingwood, Fitzroy and Richmond). - Low commitment. There is no obligation to become a member. - Friendly community minded instructors. - Plenty of parking. While the interior of the leisure centre is not as modern colourful as newer fitness centres, the well maintained gardens add to the attraction of the centre.

We call it the "Fitzroy beach" because the vibe is so chill, and everyone comes out to play! Collingwood - new 50m indoor pool, and good group exercise class facilities. Richmond - the best and largest gym of the three. Good indoor 50m pool, with hot tubs, sauna and steam rooms. Most group exercise is in a great upstairs studio space. But beware classes held in the creche area, it's small and cramped, with no mirrors. I'm a big fan, love the flexibility of going to each centre and the Les Mills instructors are great.

Class 1: Gentle Qi Gong - As we were headed towards a long weekend, I had this class all by myself and Roman was good enough to still take me through the whole hour. I had never tried Qi Gong and really had no expectations but I was hoping it would be a relaxing and almost gentle dance like and it certainly was. Class 2: Chi Yoga - slightly faster paced Qi Gong combined with yoga really helps warm up the body for a busy day ahead. This class had around 7 people and they were all regulars but very friendly and introductions were quickly made. I enjoyed both classes and would encourage people to try a class here with Roman as is good at showing you how to not overdo "poses" but really use your breath and core to get the most out of your class. Note: not parking lots, street parking and be careful of clearway signs. Change room available and workshops are often run here.

So making a special trip in for Virgin seems a little extreme. Moreover, at just $23 a fortnight, North Melbourne Recreation is a darn sight cheaper than the big V. Joining North Melbourne Rec gives you access to a surprising number of different facilities for that weeny price too... the basketball stadium (home court of the Melbourne Tigers), tennis courts, Carlton baths, North Melbourne swimming pool and of course, the gym. I generally go during off-peak hours so I can't comment on how busy it gets, but I've been impressed at how smoothly things seems to run during the more in-demand times. For those who are so inclined, it's probably also worth noting that as this is the home ground for the Melbourne Tigers (basketball) AND the North Melbourne Kangaroos (AFL) you often aren't short of eye candy. What it's really about for me though, is that it's clean, new and supervised. The latter being important for those of us who may have a nasty habit of passing out on occasion!

There is the usual 25m lap pool divided up in to fast, medium and slow but the big star of the North Melbourne pool isn't the lap pool. it is the three other, interconnected pools. Starting at a baby pool, which must only be a few centimeters deep and is totally covered by a shade cloth. This is connected by a small pebble path to a toddler pool, with steps and 'beach entry' so the little ones can approach it with ease. For those who don't know, a 'beach entry' is just a gentle sloping ramp from the side down to the bottom of the pool so it almost feels like a beach, if you ignore the lack of sand. The toddler pool is only partially covered by a shade cloth, so parents can get a tan as well as playing with the little ones. Next is the main pool, also connected by a pebble path to the toddler pool (I don't know why i found that so cool, maybe it was just the burble of the water or the more natural feel) The main pool is where all the action is! Like the toddler pool, it has steps and a 'beach entry' and steps. It has a few little ledges to sit on and for children to play, In the middle is a huge water umbrella to make sure you stay cool on the 40+ days. All in all this is a great pool for all ages!

I was gifted a corporate gym membership; of which sadly had to be returned after six months of use. Although in saying this, I was fortunate to enjoy two casual classes two weeks ago as the company I used to work for had failed to cancel my membership here. An abundant bonus. The classes are exceptional, and so are the instructors - especially Brandon on a Friday afternoon when you join him at 5:30pm for Body Attack, and with him again at 6:30pm for Body Balance - two fantastic Les Mills workouts, and he is a great start to the weekend. The reception staff defy the service you would normally receive from chain stores - they actually know your name and thus greet you by your name the moment they see you before handing in your membership card to be swiped. And when you misplace your card; it is usually immediately ready to re-collect. The launch classes of new releases on the Les Mills workouts are always so much fun. There is a different theme for each new release where you might have to dress up in halloween clothes for instance, and sometimes instructors run special classes for fundraising purposes where you cannot get in without a gold coin donation. Something Brandon did on one of his Friday afternoon Body Attack classes which went for a marathon 90 minutes once; instead of the normal 60 minutes which is intense enough.

It's just great. It has recently undergone improvement in the toilets and upgraded, which has been fantastic! I have used a personal trainer here, however found that to be a little to pricey! Apart from that, all is good! A great gym and great location!
