My family stopped in on a weeknight to indulge in gelato. Absolutely zero wait and friendly service. We selected smalls of tiramisu, birthday cake, and chocolate dirt. My husband seemed most excited by his chocolate dirt and it hit his crave. Our birthday cake and tiramisu were a bit subtle and underwhelming. I'll opt for another flavor next visit. Tiramisu is softer than ice cream and served at a bit warmer temp to keep it smooth. I'd describe it as a chillier version of pudding. Several flavors to choose from. Indoor and patio seating. We visited Gelato Gilberto in Norton Commons to order crepes. It clearly says outside on their window they have crepes. When I asked about crepes,the worker had no idea what I was talking about. Consider getting a razor blade and scraping that word off. We punted and ordered salted caramel and stratciatella gelato. Delicious!!!! A decent outside seating experience. Pre-lockdown review (my last one of these). Is this thing still on? I am really out of practice. Crazy how something that used to be such a central part of your life fades away. Wild. But this review isn't about my time on this platform*, it's about the last review I was set to write before the (literal) world changed. Apropos of me, it involved something sweet. I've written time and again how Norton Commons makes no sense to me. It still doesn't. It probably never will. But on an unseasonably warm Saturday in early winter (alas, the norm now), I found myself in NEED of something sweet. I found it at Gelato Gilberto. Despite the weather, my party was the only one in store. I thought that was odd but I wasn't about to complain about the lack of crowds in between me and gelato. As a former ice cream shop scooper (as a teen), I knew how to engage and not annoy the young lady behind the counter. Even without these protocols, though, I would have been received with smiles and grace. She was a real delight and added to my experience. She indulged my sample requests (I limit myself to two -- max), answered my questions and made small talk. Still a bit undecided, she took the initiative and suggested I go with the blood orange sorbet. I took her up on the suggestion and she was 100% right. The sorbet was crisp, bright, authentically fruity, and given to a color found in nature, rather one found in a lab. Every bite was enjoyable and none left an odd aftertaste. The sorbet was also surprisingly dense. It took me a while to get through my cup. Granted, I wanted to savor the flavor but the makeup of the sorbet lent itself to be appreciated, rather than rushed through. Had I known what the 2020s would bring, I would have made it a triple but, in hindsight, I can just be happy that it happened and hope that *this* closure really is just temporary and not another victim of my black widow tour of local businesses I frequented. And *that* closes out a series of reviews from 2009 to 2019... just a few years late. *But there's a story there. A long one. read more

Somehow we found ourselves driving through Norton Commons a couple weeks ago. I honestly have no idea how we ended up there, but suddenly my wife was buried in her phone and started giving me "turn left down this street", "go around this corner" and "no that that corner, THIS corner". After winding through several streets in the greater Norton Commons area we stopped in front of Gelato Gilberto. We got out of the car and she said "Follow me". What was I going to do? NOT follow her? I didn't make it 24 years by not following her, so in we go. This Saturday evening was pretty quiet as my wife dragged me in (ok, she didn't really drag me, but I was missing the James Bond marathon on TNT) for Gelato. Gelato Gilberto is a quaint little place that offers more than just Gelato. 24 flavors of Gelato, to be exact, in 3 different sizes and a waffle cone option. What's really cool about it is that you can mix/match flavors in your cone/waffle bowl. I had a medium bowl with a mix of Mango and Mixed Berries and it was a very good combination. The girl behind the counter was helpful in educating us what our options were (sizes) and to help answer our questions about the flavors and providing samples on an itty bitty spoon. Gelato Gilbert also offers Nutella crepes (which I REALLY need to make a return trip for) and a small section called Itty Bitty Italy where you can find a few items specific to Italy. It was a great experience for a frozen treat when we ended up somewhere we didn't expect. I had been to their location in Norton Commons, and I'm old enough to remember going to their original store. We pulled up in front of the gelateria and stepped right in. A smorgasbord of unique flavors greeted us, and I was pleased to learn that they are offering samples. After trying a few, I settled on one that I had sampled, their goat cheese and fig. Although sizes are generous here, I decided to go for a medium serving. With plenty of seating outside, we had no problem sitting in a socially-distanced manner to enjoy our gelato. I ate mine just slowly enough to avoid an ice cream headache and enjoyed every spoonful. New sweet spot off Frankfort ave & I'm hooked! I live down the road and have already tried 4-5 flavors and each one is amazing. The Pistachio has been my favorite! This place was the best tasting ice cream I have had in a minute. The store is so nice and so are the workers. One of the workers named Julianne helped me decide which flavor to pick, she was so nice and sweet about it. I ended up getting chocolate dirt! Cute little Gelato store in an adorable city with lots of shopping. There were a decent amount of flavors to choose from and they all sounded great. The cups they served the gelato in were super cute. I got Salted Caramel and the toffee, both of which were fantastic. My husband ordered a chocolate cherry which was good (mine were better ^^) The decor in the place was nice, clean and pinterest cute. We walked from a local restaurant to this gelato shop. The shop is small and clean. The case had condensation so we were unable to see the Gelatos. However the staff member working the shop was very courteous and helped recommend a popular flavor "Birthday Cake." We went with her suggestion and shared a small Birthday Cake Gelato. The flavor was so delicious it was thick consistency with little pieces of sprinkles and actual cake in the mix. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Actually it's quite good and no more expensive than a trip to some of our local ice cream shops. I had a peanut butter chocolate/salted caramel that was rich and filling. THE CUSTOMERS: We had a total of two adults and two children that went to this restaurant on a weekday. THE LOCATION: The location is not exactly easy and somewhat deceiving because it's in a neighborhood. But once you arrive it is in a very nice location. FIRST IMPRESSION: Love the little neighborhood that it's in. It's in a small "sub-city" type neighborhood with quaint shops and such and all the stuff is very "high-end". I am middle class type person so I really didn't feel like I fit in but its one of those neighborhoods that has condo-type, very little yard, skinny house with high end materials where the houses run about $400k. THE SELECTION: Really good selection of Gelato. I had the Chocolate Strawberry (which should have been chocolate because I didn't taste any strawberry at all) and the wife had the "dirt and worms" to split with our little one. THE PRICE: The price came out to be $10.49 for two "larges" (the cup was very small but they overflowed the cup). THE FOOD: Very quick service. The Gelato was good. Tasted like Gelato. Nothing too special. THE FINAL "SCOOP": I think this place was very nice but I don't think I'll be going back unless a friend or someone else wanted to go. I thought the price was okay but I like some of the other "dessert" places better (e.g. Homemade IC&PK, Cold Stone Creamery, etc.). As I said I am regular guy with middle-class tendencies so I feel like this place was more of a yuppie ice-cream shop than anything. Not a bad place though just not for us.
