The coffee was inoffensive - would've loved some more flavor - and the vanilla had an almost gummy texture, for gelato. My mom took the dark chocolate and pistachio. Man, the pistachio was flavorful - but we ate maybe 30% of the dark chocolate, stopping because of the heavy aftertaste. I'm not sure where the good gelato places in Siena are, but this isn't one of them.

An hour or so before Palio, I stopped by La Vecchia Latteria for a snack. Ambiance (2/5): This gelateria is pretty small, so given the timing, ordering was a bit of a mess. There's a small indoor area and the line was out of the door. Definitely a grab and go type spot instead of other ice cream shops that have plenty of seating and are bigger. No seating here. Service (3/5): Given the demand, they were trying to do the best they could by taking orders as quickly as possible. More of a controlled line would have been nice but they were working hard which is always appreciated. Drinks (N/A): Like most gelaterias, they have various soft drinks and water. I didn't order anything. Food (3.5/5): As usual, I went with the medium which allows you to select two flavors. I tend to go with a fruity flavor and a creamy flavor. The selection here is nice and consistent with the hundreds and hundreds of gelaterias that are spread out throughout Italy. Overall: Located in the heart of Siena, La Vecchia Latteria is one of the best and one of the oldest gelaterias in town. It makes for a good spot for a refreshing dessert on-the-go.

The gelato here was fine, nothing special. In fact, it was probably some of the most unmemorable ice cream I had in all of Italy. Remember that even the worst the gelato is still gelato, so there's something redeemable about it! I opted for the strawberry gelato. The flavors were strong and fresh and overall it was just fine. The shop was a bit dirty and as in most of Italy, you had to stand while you eat. It's not a bad place to grab a quick, cool snack if you want to enjoy the main square. The piccolo (small) size cup was about twice the price of other gelaterias in town (read: off the main tourist square). Wander around town a bit and you'll find a reasonably priced gelato shop. I didn't get the tourist rip-off treatment or anything, but there's better gelato to be found in Siena.

It's a pretty small place, so I can understand that. Everything is vegan and organic, it doesn't get much better than that! I ordered the gnocchi which came in a red pepper sauce, then got a side of grilled veggies (which that day turned out to be peppers). The gnocchi was very tasty. The portion was a bit small but for 5Eu it was reasonable. The grilled veggies were smothered in oil which was a little strange. There was a huge selection of desserts to choose from that day, yet somehow I found myself gravitating toward the gelato. I got the chocolate & hazlenut which was delicious and a great way to cool off.
