I had a miscarriage in July 2025 at the ER, just week or so before my first doctor's appointment for the pregnancy. For my plan, everything under maternity care is supposed to be covered including complications. In October 2025, I received $1,000 bill related to my miscarriage. I called to explain the issue and that everything should be covered. The agent agreed and told me the claim would be reprocessed. For months, I followed up incessantly and was given the runaround about status. Every agent contradicted the last. I was told my claim was sent for reprocessing, then that it wasn't sent for reprocessing, that it would be expedited, that it would not be expedited. I was told I would get phone calls that were never returned. Finally, yesterday, after following up yet again and going on six months since my first phone call and nearly nine months after my miscarriage, the agent confirmed with me that the bill was reprocessed in error and that I would not be responsible for the claim. He further confirmed there was no other action that I was waiting on from GEHA and no other action I needed to take I followed up with my hospital today to ensure the bill was taken care of. They informed they did not receive any updates. I called GEHA again to confirm the status and to give me a reference number for the decision that was made just yesterday. This time, I was informed that my claim was only submitted for reprocessing AGAIN yesterday, that it may still not be covered, and that the agent(s) are not "claims trained" to be able to give me the confirmation that was given. I am stuck calling repeatedly, sending complaints, and forced to relive my traumatic miscarriage over and over again because of their incompetence and dismissiveness. I would not recommend GEHA to anyone and demand accountability for their negligence and incompetence that continue to cause me (and likely may others) emotional distress. read more

My provider has been waiting for payment for a year now. Multiple calls and many hours on the phone by both myself and the provider and the payment has still not be completed. GEHA has sent the payment to the wrong address multiple times (an address that does not exist/was never provide to them). The last attempt resulted in the provider receiving the check followed by finding out that GEHA submitted a stop payment on the check. Unbelievable how many error can be made with one claim. read more

As a provider in the mental health field I am disgusted by the lack of customer service from GEHA. I have been waiting for claims to pay from November of 2024. Just spoke to them again this morning and was told they are back logged and to give them another 30 days to process the claims. The last phone call I made to customer service on 10/1/25 I was told the matter was being escalated and to give them 30-45 business days to process the claims... Same song and dance with no resolve. This is the reason why many providers don't accept insurance at all. We provide services to members and then don't receive reimbursement. How are the providers supposed to survive and pay their staff a living wage if the insurance doesn't reimburse for services rendered. Absolutely Awful. We had GEHA for our dental provider. It's very obvious that they delay delay delay paying a claim with bogus excuse after excuse. It took them 17 months to make an initial payment on an orthodontic claim and then tried using the same bogus excuse when the next payment came due even though they had everything they needed which was obvious because they had already finally started paying on the claim. It seems there have been improvements. Reviews haven't been taking as long. The automated service hasn't been hanging up on me anymore after saying "everything can be completed in the portal,. you know longer need to call for prior authorization." Simple straight forward extensions for missed authorized days are being processed with in a day or two of submitting. The staff seem to be more informed and I'm able to get answers more quickly than I was. Not sure if they're reading their reviews and making improvements or what but in the last month it hasn't been as big of a headache working with GEHA or UMR either. Having GEHA Federal Employee Coverage- Started Experiencing Blinding Headaches And Blurry Vision In The Left Eye 6 Days Ago. A Board Certified Internist, A Senior Board Certified Ophthalmologist, And A Senior Owner And Board Certified ENT Specialist And Surgeon All Were Seen. All Of Them Recommended An Immediate CT Scan Of The Head. It Has Been Six Days And GEHA Has Not Approved The CT Scan Or Made Any Response To The Ordered Scans To Any Of The Doctors, Nort to the Patient. Daily, I Am Taking Double Doses Of Toradol And 10 To 12 Ibuprofen Daily, To Manage The Pain. GEHA Was Contacted And Refused To Explain The Lack Of Action On The Medical Scans Being Ordered. Two Or More Weeks Of Review Was - At A Minimum - Was Said By GEHA To Event Take Any Action. In addition to premiums going up by almost 50%, I discovered that procedure costs increased by 90%. At least with how much is charged monthly for the insurance plan, that cost was upfront. I NEVER expected a 90% increase in the cost of this procedure. I switched to GEHA's high deductible plan last year. They initially processed some claims, but since May have stopped entirely. They won't deny them - they just refuse to process them at all, despite acknowledging that they have received them. At this point, they haven't processed almost $10,000 in claims, including for the birth of our child. I've called and used the chat to try to get them to act for months with no result. I'm going to have to hire a lawyer to see if I can get a judgement forcing them to simply process my claims. It is crazy - it isn't even that they are denying valid claims (they also do that) - they just won't act on them at all. I'm switching back to my old provider this open season. Unfortunately, I totally agree with the high number of one star reviews posted here. I submitted a claim in May 2025 for hearing aids covered by the plan. It was rejected twice. I appealed, and the appeal was granted in August 2025. In November 2025, they paid Costco (provider) instead of me (member), even though the claim I submitted clearly said (and still says when retrieved from the web site just now) to reimburse Member, not Provider. Still haggling. They also lied to me about Silverscripts, to get me to change last year. Granted I only take 2 generics, so it's not so bad, but I'm still ticked about that. read more

I wish I could give a rating of zero. If I could rewind the decision to switch to GEHA, I most certainly would!!! I am a 60 year old diabetic with neuropathy and developed a wound on my big toe. According to my podiatrist, the only med on the market that can can debride the unhealthy tissue and help prevent the loss of my toe is called Santyl and this so-called insurance carrier has denied me twice and is willing to put my toe at risk due to the length of time it's taking to get it approved. Other diabetic meds: Tresiba is $350.00 for a 90 day supply no matter who fills it, whereas BCBS was $40.00 for 90 day. Liraglutide (generic for Viktoza) can only be filled a month at a time no matter if it's through mail order or at a board and mortar store. High blood pressure meds require that my primary care doc send a script to CVS pharmacy and CVS Caremark (mail order). read more

The worst company. They don't actually adhere to their own policies that are outlined in your insurance policy packet. They had my deductible restart on the 1st of January and their policy packet states that if you switch to another insurance your deductible does not restart. I had to call them multiple times and they still have never resolved my issue. I will never pick them for my insurance again. GEHA has a new website and apparently they have some issues with claim submission. We have submitted a claim on 3/22/2025, 4/8/2025, and 4/11/2025 online. Each time we get a confirmation number of the submission, but when we call, they say "you don't have a claim pending." Finally chatted with a representative who states that they have been having issues with the new web provider, and that on average, it takes them 30 days from claim submission to starting the processing. This would have been great to get in an email confirmation stating that they have received the claim, and how long it would take them to process it. I have had GEHA for 15+ years and never had an issue, but this time it just seems very cumbersome and complicated to submit a claim online. Looking into switching next year if this does not improve. read more

Geha has been playing around with my prescription plan. They have changed my inhaler three times, as well have changed me to silverscript. They messed up the changeover by not completing the paperwork so I had Medicare sending me threatening letters. Very bad experience since the first of the year. read more

Fraudulent insurance company. They were hacked in 2024 and reorganized their claims system in 2025 causing all sorts of issues and unpaid claims. You call the "advocates" who just give gratuitous information and NEVER resolve your problems. You get a different person every time you call for help, so expect to start over every time and it goes nowhere. You can try and escalate to management, but they will never contact or assist you. We have the GEHA high option dental. GEHA failed to pay our dental claims (just for cleanings!) and argued every step of the way for nine months after our dentist said GEHA never paid them and made us pay personally. I'm a retired Federal Employee and I decided to change my Health Insurance to GEHA. I have High Option and I pay what I consider a lot for Health Insurance. There are 2 doctors in my area that do not take health insurance because of the constant stress you have to go thru to submit claims. So, I have to submit the claims. I've never seen such disorganization and unprofessional people who work there. I'm tired of hearing how busy they are and it'll take them 30-90 days to process claims. How about if I tell them I'm busy and I'll pay them in 30-90 days? That would be unacceptable in their business, so why is it acceptable for them to tell me this. Oh, it gets worse, in 2026 pricing goes way up even higher and the consumer pays additional funds to doctors, hospitals, deductibles that GEHA doesn't cover and the service that they will provide will be even worse. GEHA has stopped sending claims to FSAFEDS for members to be reimbursed for their out-of-pocket expenses. No claims have been sent since March 2025. As part of the paperless reimbursement process, the member is not supposed to submit the claims themselves. Members were not notified that GEHA stopped sending the claims or the reason why. This has caused a delay in members getting reimbursed for their out-of-pocket expenses, and with no timeframe as to when GEHA will begin sending claims again. There is no information on GEHA's website to alert members. There has been no Public Service Announcement or media release. The only claims being sent to FSAFEDS are those claims that CVS Pharmacy is sending directly to FSAFEDS. GEHA is holding up the process of members being reimbursed money which has been coming out of members' paychecks all year. I have contacted GEHA multiple times about this, yet without resolution from GEHA. In addition, I mailed them a paper medical claim in December 2024. They claimed they never received it. They told me to submit it again online. Finally got reimbursed after 7 months. Otherwise I have not had problems until these recent ones. While they did also recently deny a MRI prior authorization, I am ok with that (I won't go into the history of the medical issue). On a better note, you can now view prior authorization status in your portal, but I have only been able to do this from a computer, and not from my smartphone. read more

I have had GEHA for years. Customer Service has always been the best. Well the CEO, and board decided to use a system called HealthSafeID. I can't access my account. Can't change address, can't get my ID cards, etc. There is zero contact with corporate office so the poor customer service reps are attempting to deal with the problem but their hands are tied. All they can do us put the customer's name on a spreadsheet so tech support can call you back. No time frame, no hey maybe we should just go back to the way it used to be. I work for a provider of Hearing Aids- the PT in question has an eligible flat rate benefit and we have filed & used it 2 times in the past- (since 2013! this time this patient has been waiting since JUNE 6 2025! Mailed in to GEHA first- because that is the ONLY way to file these - it was denied as inactive which was a HUGE MISTAKE on the part of GEHA- so they reprocess the claim --since JULY 16 THEY HAVE BEEN REPROCESSING THIS CLAIM- we have asked 3 times for it to be expedited- and we are told "they are" what?! I sure would hate to see the normal claims if this is EXPIDITED!! at last call 11/19/25 a very rude claims women said this claim has been on the expedited list since 10/08/25 and she will "just need to wait" I feel terrible for this woman- waiting as she is- GEHA is so glad I am not the patient or that my parents are not having this problem. I would be calling EVERY SINGLE DAY until it was paid. I can only imagine how much this woman has paid for her insurance and have them do this to her. 6 months for a flat rate benefit. I pay for HIGH option dental insurance through GEHA. In January 2023, I had to have two teeth extracted; they were located UNDER a fixed bridge. One of the two teeth requiring extraction was the ANCHOR for the bridge. In order to extract the two bad teeth, the dentist had to either send me for expensive, messy and dangerous dental surgery to remove the teeth through my gums OR remove the fixed bridge. In order to preserve at least the crowned tooth that is the other anchor of the bridge, the dentist spent a lot of time and exertion CUTTING the bridge at that crown. This prevented injury to the anchor tooth! This procedure was done at the same time and as part of the extraction procedure. BTW, doing this saved GEHA the cost of another crown IF the tooth even survived complete bridge removal. This procedure is called "Partial Denture Sectioning" and is covered by Dental insurance code D9120. My dentist billed GEHA $250 for THIS sectioning as part of the overall bill for the extraction work. GEHA DENIED payment for this procedure with NO EXPLANATION. I filed an appeal using their process and following all their arcane rules. In addition to reconsideration of payment, I requested an EXPLANATION for non-coverage. I received a second denial for payment. The letter offers the following "explanation": "Fixed partial denture sectioning is not a covered procedure under your plan." IN SHORT, it is not on our list. I called and requested a reasonable explanation of WHY D9120 is NOT on the list. The very kind person who answered my call did NOT know, NOR does she know WHO in GEHA makes these determinations. They are completely insulated from the public who buy their insurance. Readers of this should know that there are probably tens of thousands of insurance codes for Dental procedures. I very much doubt that ANYONE in GEHA has ever noticed D9120, let alone made an intelligent, rational, decision to exclude it, per se. There is NO rational medical/dental reason that I can even IMAGINE for denying coverage when this procedure is NECESSARY as part of another, covered, procedure. Although I am not an attorney, I KNOW that this type of decision is deemed to be "arbitrary and capricious." Since I've had NO experience with any other dental insurance companies in many, many years, I cannot say that GEHA is any better or any worse. What I can say is that ALL insurance companies are wonderful UNTIL the customer files a claim. THIS is one reason why insurance companies are universally hated! Followup - On September 6, 2023 - after marinating for a while, I received the EXPECTED response to my request for an "independent third party review" of the denied claim for the D9120 procedure. The letter advises that the "independent third party" upholds the denial (HUGE SURPRISE). The reason given is identical to the IDIOT response first provided. D9120 is not covered because it is not covered. That nicely seals the package. I am now seeking another dental insurer and I WILL be reading reviews and asking questions before I sign! I have opted out of the program 3 times in writing and 3 times by phone and Social Security is taking out money from my benefits by the authorization of GEHA and not my approval. This should be illegal. I'm unable to get my medication because they don't opt me out. GEHA is being paid so I can get prescriptions and money is being taken out of my SS as well. How can GEHA get away with such terrible service??? It has been a year now that I have been waiting for a payment for approved services. I have called at least 8 times now to check on it's status. At first they say that my claim is not valid, but when I have them go over my paperwork they ALL agree that I submitted everything appropriately and I am due the full reimbursement promised. They all say that they will need another 30 days to get things cleared up and send me a check. It is obvious that they have no intention of paying me. I need this money and the constant long calls to get them to address my case is full of frustration and it is sooooo time consuming. My dentist, who usually gets paid, told me that they know of so many clients who express the same frustrations with GEHA. Most will not keep trying to get fair resolution so they give up. I'd give them zero stars if I could. My dentist recommended invisilign for dental serious health reasons. We did all the pre-submission work in July. By early February the next year they were STILL asking for more information. I had to get a patient advocate involved and they FINALLY gave me approval and said I could get started. Six weeks AFTER I started treatment I get a letter stating they're still reviewing and may need more information and I may HAVE TO PAY the entire amount.
