This post office is the first Open Air Post Office in the United States…read more It's a beautiful building! The first corner stone was laid in October of 1916 and the building was completed almost a year later in September 1917.

Well I thought I would pop off a review for the very architecturally cool Open Air Post Office, the…read morefirst of its kind. I once worked near here, actually at a few places, all walking distance, and this is the post office I would use. I can't comment on how it functions as a post office now, but as a bit of "local flavor" it's pretty cool. I say this for two reasons. One is the obvious cool factor. Built in the Mediterranean Revival style and completed on September 27, 1917, it's a throwback to a different era. The lines and curves of this building are like no other post office that I know of. Sam H. uploaded a good series of pictures showing off the beauty of this post office. The other reason it has a bit of local flavor is for the rather seedy crowd that seems to gather. A sign warns that if you are not here on post office business, the police are authorized to act as agents for the post office and remove trespassers. I can't imagine what led to the need for that sign (proximity to Williams Park maybe?), but since it's open air, it's means access to the PO boxes is also pretty easy, and 24 hours. No other 24 services exist though. In the north west corner of the open air part a flight of stairs leads up to the historic museum. I did not have a chance to confirm that it's still in operation, but if you are a post office aficionado, it may be worth a look. On April 4, 1975, this post office was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. [update] Here's a little extra reading I found if you want more history: http://www.stpete.org/historic_preservation/historic_landmarks/local_landmarks/docs/Open_Air_Post_Office.pdf

The road surface is smooth unlike some bridges in the area especially the Bayside Bridge. The view is pleasant but not spectacular. It is possible see some wildlife and some boats on the Intracoastal. However land is pretty close and the bridge fairly low so a long-distance scenic view is not available. Lots of houses can be seen but they are mostly not indulgent Waterfront luxury houses. Instead they are basically sixties vintage Suburban style houses that just happen to have a water View. In other words a $125,000 house on a $500,000 lot. But a bridge is primarily a way to get places and this one does its job with enough lanes for traffic most of the time and a smooth drive. In that sense it does its job a bit better than most. The bridge is currently free, no toll. The bridge was given to the town of Treasure Island for free by the federal government with an agreement with late Congressman Bill Young that there would never be a toll charge. The town of Treasure Island has been trying to get out of this agreement and charge a toll. Be sure to object when the time comes. Taken altogether it's a pleasant and effective way to get to Treasure Island.

After I bought the tickets it sent links to my email to share with everyone. The tickets can be printed or I downloaded them to my Apple wallet. The boat was easy to find with signs. I don't recommend if you have mobility issues because you will have problems entering the boat and won't be able to exit or reboard at the key bc you have to climb up and down a ladder to do so. The staff is super friendly and helpful. They did offer to help me but once I got to the top it was easier for me to crawl and pull myself up. The boat ride itself was fun and entertaining. We saw dolphins and the captain pointed out some local spots. We reached the one side of the key by the bird reserve and were allowed to snorkel and swim for about an hour. You can stand where they let us out. It was about 4' high. We reboarded and went around to the other side of the key. They let us out and gave us about another hour to explore. The lighthouse is in the middle of the area we we let out and the beach. There's picnic tables, a fort to explore. The beach is gorgeous! You can only get here by boat. Captain Tom and Tanner are fantastic and super friendly. Bring your own snacks, drinks and sandwiches etc. bring towels and suntan lotion. They provide sanitized snorkeling gear.
