Manhattan has been the county seat since 1858 after a disputed election with Ogden was overturned for fraud. The courthouse itself dates to 1906 and was designed by J.C. Holland and Frank C. Squires, who gave it the heavy arches, squat columns, gabled dormers, and tall clock tower that make it a textbook example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. Walking up to it, the stone arch entrance and the tower rising above make the building feel both imposing and inviting at the same time, the kind of early-20th-century civic architecture that still carries real presence. Manhattan's name comes from the mid 1850's settlers who hoped to establish a Free-State town and adopted the name from Manhattan, New York reflecting their origins and aspirations. The Dickinson County Courthouse in Abilene is a solid early twentieth century civic building,…read morecompleted in 1956 in a restrained Modern style that reflects the era's preference for clean lines and functional design. It is a practical post-war design that fits neatly into the civic core without trying to be grand or fussy. It was a pleasant stop, especially since i happened to be here during business hours which is unusual for my travel and gave me the chance to walk through the public areas without any issue. Inside, there is not a whole lot to see but the walk through the building was still interesting especially the portraits of the former commissioners and county officials lining the walls that give the place a sense of continuity and local history. Dickinson County is named for Daniel S. Dickinson, the New York senator and prominent mid-nineteenth century political figure who was well known in the Kansas Territory during the years when new counties were being organized. Kansas used several nationally recognizable names in its territorial period and Dickinson was one of them. The county carries his name even though he had no direct connection to Abilene or the region. The courthouse is a working building more than a showpiece, yet standing here in former President Eisenhower's home town and in a county that has been anchored in Abilene since the 1850s, the courthouse feels like one of those quiet civic landmarks that tells its story in small ways if you take the time to look. Chase County Courthouse is the oldest operating courthouse in the state of Kansas! That tidbit of…read moreinformation would have flown right over my head, but I got the opportunity to tour this historic building, so over the course of the 30-or-so-minute tour, it all kind of sank in that this place is pretty special. If you get the chance to take a tour of the courthouse, you should. Self-guided tours are available Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. You'll get to see the old-timey jail upstairs, with its single cell that can accommodate one person in the pokey at a time. You'll also see the court room, which is still being used to this day. This courthouse has so much history, but is also still functioning as a modern-day courthouse and taking care of business throughout the year for the people of Chase County. The building itself was completed in 1873, and looks distinctive, standing tall at the end of an otherwise modest street. Make sure to go up to the third floor and look out of the peephole window that faces downtown. You'll get a good view of the shops and buildings that make up this small town.

There's a wonderful/large children's section, there are lovely/large stained glass windows, and there are several areas filled with big/comfortable chairs. It's obvious that a lot of careful thought and planning went into this library.
