It was totally in my price range. I was greeted by an amazing tall blonde modelesque sales assistant who was very friendly and asked if I needed any help. I shared my surprise at the prices and she said everyone says that. Basically the store is worth browsing through to check for wardrobe one offs - strappy, flowing blue dress for example. I was just looking; I had pre-programmed myself on entry but the items in here are really temptingly well priced. About 100ms from Kings Cross station not far at all to walk.

In business for over twenty years and being Australia's largest range of cowboy boots, Route 66 offers a seemingly endless collection of boots. They also sell a wide variety of 1950's inspired rockabilly, Americana clothing, hats, belts, sunglasses, handbags, lingerie and a selection of funky T-Shirts, my personal favourite being the "God Goo Muck" shirt. What excited me most in Route 66 was their range of kitschy, pop art junk, which I had to resist stocking up on, if you are in need of a Jimi Hendrix corpse in coffin (or the Ramones or Rolling Stones in a shared coffins), a paper mache skeleton a crucifix covered in guns and horseshoes knives and guns or other classic Christian kitsch. You can even find a Wacky Wobbler Rat Fink. I don't think I want to be a cowboy, well not this week anyway, but I did have fun at Route 66, it is a large and fun shop to wander around, the staff are friendly and they play a catchy mix of swinging country pop. Route 66 is definitely something different in Darlinghurst, even if it is not your style it is worth going for the experience.

I have a decently unhealthy obsession with vintage cowboy boots…read more I must have at least 12 pairs at home and back last year when I was packing to move to Australia (in two suitcases), I somehow prioritized taking 4 pairs. Sick, I know. I was window-shopping along Crown one evening a while back and spotted my new loves in the window of Route 66: tall, grey boots with white cut out detailing and small red hearts decorating the top. I like to think the love at first sight was mutual, but I might be lying to myself. The very next day, I marched my little self in there to claim what was rightfully mine. And then BAM, I was hit with the truth. My lusty loves who had made so many sweet promises to me through the shop window the night before, were playing cold, hard games with me now. There's a difference between playing hard to get, and actually BEING hard to get. And at $425 for the pair, this was no game. So, what could I do? Deflated and heart broken, I cast one last glance at my beautiful boots and bee-lined it out of there. If the interaction were a Western quick draw, I definitely hadn't been victorious.

So pretty plain but comfortable things. It's a great concept for a store but a larger variety wouldn't hurt. Since it's so small everything is rather compacted and stuffy so not much room for browsing without bumping into someone else. Even though it has a good selection of basics, I'd rather get my Bonds undies and singlet's from a store like Target where there is a much larger variety, often specials and discounts and they don't get pissed off at you if you need a plastic bag to carry all your new purchases. Yep, once the guy at the counter in Pluto's told me I hated the environment because I needed a plastic bag to carry my new bras. Perhaps I should have worn them as hats and strolled along the street home.

In particular they support children living in poverty in India, free food distribution to the needy, sponsoring free community based cultural events and promoting a holistic lifestyle of balance and wellbeing through educational programs. Wow. I loved it before because it has some very pretty stuff - gorgeous and original floaty silk dresses and long beads and silver earings that I haven't seen before. It's only a small shop but what they do sell is all quality stuff and now, I find out, sold in aid of socially conscious cause. What a delight.

The store sells their own label, Alice Underground, which focuses on simple, feminine pieces like smock dresses, flowy printed skirts and oversized t-shirts - accordingly, a lot of the designs are one-size-fits-all so you can easily change how you wear them with belts or by using them with extra pieces of clothing. I used to come into this store a lot when I lived in the area, and pretty much always found something I liked - generally, this fell into the summery, beach cover-up category at a reasonable price. Last time I went the selection of stock was a bit random, but most likely they were just in between seasons.
