We did the trip from Brooklyn to Cypress Landing in about 9 hours of travel with moderate paddling. Pay attention to your safety brief because they give a good description of your halfway point. We stopped on the first night before reaching it and had some extra paddling to do the next day. They warned us of one newly-downed tree that spanned the river, but said they would be out to work on it before the season picked up. We hit Cypress Creek right at our pickup time and our ride was there waiting for us. They do all of the heavy lifting during put-in and take-out. All you have to do is load up and shove off. The river itself had many bends, and was about 2/3 shallow with a fast current and the rest deep with little to no current. There were many stumps and downed branches to maneuver around, but no part of the river was impassable. It's impossible to get lost; simply stay in the widest part of the river and follow the current. There were numerous sand and gravel beaches that would make for a good picnic or campsite. The Black Creek Hiking Trail runs along the right side of the river--at times you can clearly see it--and provides a ready source of firewood.

My wife booked a few nights in Tickfaw state park, sight unseen, to be more or less in the vicinity of New Orleans, a plantation tour, and a swamp boat tour that we had booked months in advance. As it turned out, we actually enjoyed this state park stay more than our visit to New Orleans! The state park entrance is actually at the back of a neighborhood of sorts, on a narrow two-lane road that cuts away from the highway at a weird angle. Once inside the park proper, visitors are treated to beautiful swamps, complete with cypress trees, Spanish moss, and all the critters you would expect to find here. The campground we enjoyed had full hook ups, a small wooden deck, and a long back-in pad for our trailer. There was also a resident raccoon who kept us honest about locking things up at night, and securing coolers and food. Tickfaw state park features long boardwalks with railings, that afford visitors beautiful hikes in different parts of the park through different kinds of trees and plants. Unfortunately, many of these were still damaged in the summer of 2022 from the previous year's Hurricane Ida that blew through southern Louisiana and surrounding areas. The only trail that was not affected by this was the one without a boardwalk, so we enjoyed a hike through beautiful pines that went down to the river. Despite most of the trails being closed and damaged, we still enjoyed ourselves here, and had a good time. In the evening, I enjoyed casting topwater lures in on the cypress knees and trees, and caught & released several big bowfin... A fish that is sort of a cross between a catfish a bass, and a pit bull I suppose. I'm not sure when we will be back through this part of the world, but Tickfaw State Park is definitely a place that I would stay again: off the beaten path but close enough to where you want to be, peaceful and quiet, and the kind of southern serene that helps a SoCal guy like me to slow down and enjoy life a little bit.

We were excited to hear that the path was 8 miles, which had a few waterfalls and rapids. There is a main building to pay for your rentals and additional items like waterproof phone pouches or eyeglass straps. There another building for the restrooms and showers for customers. After we paid, we waited for a designated bus to give us a ride to the kayak drop off spot at the Seminary Bridge. Every kayak was laid out for us already and we just had to choose one to bring to the water. Okatoma Creek was very relaxing and had a few small waterfalls that actually flipped some kayaks over. It was funny and scary at the same time for some members of my group. There were also a few sandbars that we "parked" our kayaks and relaxed at. At the end of our kayaking trip, we returned our kayaks right at the spot where we parked our cars! Overall, this is a great place to bring your family and friends to enjoy Okatoma Creek! Prices are good for how long the trip is and fun with all of the waterfalls and rapids.

But Lemme start off with I'm not one for…read morecoming to social media to bash a business, but this is apparently the only way I'll be able to get answers. I've been told they would call several times and nothing soooo I know stuff happens beyond our control, but what was supposed to have been a fun time with some friends for just a night away turned sour quick. This could have been handled so much better in my opinion. so for Saturday (October 21st) we had a cabin booked at Seminary cabin and canoe rentals (cypress cabin). Never been before but FACEBOOK REVIEWS looked like it was decent. I didn't think about looking at yelp or Google which I should have I booked back in August (18th maybe don't remember exact date), paid deposit which is fine I understand most places you have to. Well I asked was there a certain time to check in the lady I spoke with was like no so I got there about 4:10 drove around bc signs are not that clear and I found the office, which might I add was giving creepy vibes I was expecting some hills have eyes mess to walk out the woods and strangle me tbh, walked up to the door of the office it was locked and no sign/note of anything of what to do so I messaged the Facebook page AND called the number the only number I know on there page, no answer. So I went driving around and found the cabin after taking some path, when I pulled up this overwhelming feeling came over me. Now I have anxiety so there's a lot that creeps me out so I just brushed off as being nervous being by myself but y'all there was NO BODY ELSE THERE in the area like no other campers, nothing that I could see, I left the car running (locked of course) and went inside i had my boyfriend on the phone, the stairs were wobbly and looked crooked, door was just about open I like pushed with A finger lightly and it opened. I felt like I was being watched. I looked in the bedrooms and the plastic covers were off like no one cleaned them before we got there, the stove was taped with duct tape I could barely get it to open now who would wanna cook on that. I turned the light on in the hall and it automatically blew I didn't even make it upstairs to see that area. I opened the fridge and freezer just for a split second and closed it just to see what was inside and y'all the smell of pneumonia and rubbing alcohol hit me like a freight train, I told my boyfriend who was on the phone I have to go that was the final straw i was by myself trying to drive dizzy (I know not smart but I did not feel safe). i drove around one way I thought was to get out, it did lead back out to the main road and the gate thing was locked. Im sure I could have went around but I just turned around and went out the way I came in. Might I add at the end of the road there was a hunting house in the middle of the fork in between the 2 cabins. I called the number again to tell them I was not staying, no answer of course. So I send them a message telling them I would not be staying. Almost an hour later from my last message they reply saying give me a call,, of course I did and guess what NO ANSWER!! this is unacceptable they will not respond to messages or calls so I can have answers but from what I can see I'm not the only who had this problem. I feel like I deserve a refund maybe just me but what was supposed to have been a good night for some mamas/friends was very let down. Also Seems like when I was asking info about cabin to book they were very attentive. I just want answers and to tell yall DO NOT BOOK WITH THESE PEOPLE!! Included is pictures of what I remember to take! Along with TIMES that I called and other yelp reviews that I should have read in the first place!

And made me think that the fun, relaxed, unplugged atmosphere of paddling trips of my childhood would not be the case here. Boy was I ever wrong. The upper echelon of this group is a set of ridiculously knowledgeable folks, yes. Quite a few are certified instructors in kayak and/or canoe paddling, self rescue, etc with the American Canoe Association (ACA). Some of them are total gear-heads and love to discuss the latest and greatest stuff, including their stable of boats. But they are also extremely friendly, approachable, helpful, and have the general mindset of promoting their love of paddling (and the safety thereof) with anyone and everyone who is interested. From my first (quite hesitant) email to a trip leader about an upcoming paddle, to the lovely trip itself, and every subsequent interaction and trip in the past year or so, I've been treated with utmost respect and welcomed into the fold with warmth. On the first paddle alone, I was given a wealth of tips and tricks of the trade from several different members, and have seen others benefit from the combined zillion years of experience and knowledge that the group as a whole has to offer. We've also had people go out of their way to help us with gear, invite us to different events, and even lend gear from time to time. The real resource is the experience and wisdom of the members, but the website is really helpful too. It offers a ton of great information about local (Southeast Louisiana and Southern Mississippi) trips, outfitters, rentals, gear suggestions, etc. Upcoming trips and events are listed here as well, including a rating of easy, moderate, strenuous, etc so you can gauge if the trip will be a good match for your skill set. There's also a link to the message board, which is a wealth of information as well and a quick way to get an answer to any paddling-related question you might have that hasn't been addressed on the website. And even the casual observer can see from the interaction there that there's a lot of good-natured teasing and a good dose of dry humor as well. The group offers different training classes and such at different events - Paddlefest (usually at the end of October) had tons of great classes on paddling, outdoor cooking, and even a tarp demonstration last year, and much of the same (and then some) is planned for 2012. They also do demo days, where members bring a ton of different boats for folks to try out and get a feel for, since it's so hard to tell how a boat handles until you're actually in it and paddling. Self rescue clinics are usually conducted at some point during the year as well. Your membership dues also include a membership in the ACA, which comes with a subscription to one of four paddling magazines and a host of other resources. Non-members are welcome to do club trips, but a signed waiver and a small fee ($5 per person I think) will be required so the club can satisfy its requirements with the ACA as a Paddle America Club. Most of the regulars are quite adept, but skill level varies greatly especially with some of the newer members. There aren't a whole lot of kids involved with the group at the moment, but don't let that scare you off if you're looking to get into paddling as a family. With the right trip (not too long, plenty of breaks, an easy and kid-friendly waterway), a well-behaved child will be more than welcome. My little one has been on numerous trips with the club and has always had a blast. I don't need to tell you about the benefits of paddling itself. Unplugging and getting away from the world for a bit and immersing yourself in the beautiful outdoors either appeals to you, or it doesn't. If you enjoy (or would like to enjoy) paddling and wouldn't mind spending more time on the water and sharpening your skills, this is the group for you. I really can't recommend these guys (and girls!) enough.

My partner and I have some experience paddling and wanted plenty of time to see wildlife and get deep in the swamp for the best scenery, and for us the extended tour was the right choice! I'd recommend it to visitors to New Orleans who love nature, the outdoors, and/or getting a fun and unique workout in during vacation. We were on the water for about 4 hours. Sunscreen, sunglasses, shoes you don't mind getting wet, and PLENTY of water are a must! There are stops at a truck stop right before and after for the bathroom and buying any drinks/snacks, plus a stop on dry land during the tour. Our guide Nick was clearly dedicated to both paddling and nature even outside of work, and our tour felt less like a scripted performance as some tours can be and more like a buddy was showing and telling you things he was passionate about. We saw several small alligators, barred owls, hawks, turtles, and water birds. It was unseasonably warm so the reptiles were a treat to see, and it was awesome getting to see owls out in daylight which I'd never be able to pick out myself. Bring binoculars if you have them! My only small complaint, which has nothing to do with the tour itself: the AI-generated content on the company's Instagram page is kind of weird. Photos and videos from actual tours would be more honest and enticing!
