I've never been much of a DIY kinda guy, but I've always been interested in learning how to make…read morethings. Now I can't say I would've chosen the workshop I did with my wife recently at this AR Workshop location (more on that in a moment), but choices aside, the experience was awesome and I'd definitely return in the future to make something else (which was the plan). You see, I actually bought a workshop for my wife and I to do as a 2-year anniversary gift. Cotton is apparently the gift type for that marriage year and so I got creative and chose the knitted pumpkin class for us both (I probably would've preferred something involving wood for myself, but it totally worked for what I needed it for). I could tell this was definitely more of a feminine-type class as I was the only guy there, but I never really felt out of place as everyone was very friendly and welcoming. Backtracking for a moment, this workshop location in Patchogue is a storefront I never noticed, just a few shops away from James Joyce. The interior has a ton of crafts and items already made all around the store to show you things that you could do at another class. A lot of local vibes too with Long Island as the theme for many crafts which was cool to see. The wall of tools and paint also showed that there are many different projects of varying difficulty. Though for this specific pumpkin class we really only needed two items: a styrofoam pumpkin and some chunky yarn. There were two long tables covered in a variety of colored yarn rolls with enough for my wife and I to vary our pumpkin colors (we were each allowed to make three). Honestly, I wasn't sure how we'd be making these pumpkins, but the woman in charge of the class (along with her daughter) explained that we'd be doing two different types. They each took charge of one of the long tables and were able to help with keeping us on pace with directions, helping to fix errors (it was nice for the woman to say almost everything is fixable), and giving us support. Once done, there was a table of flowers, feathers, ribbon, and small wood pieces to pep up your pumpkins if you choose to do so (I gave mine a little pizzaz, but kept things simple). The whole class ran about 2 hours which was definitely enough time and we could have even stayed a few minutes longer as we were not being rushed out which was nice. Overall, AR Workshop in Patchogue is definitely a fun time. Their options for crafts and projects seem vast and with a friendly and helpful staff, I'd happily return, which I told my wife she could pick out another class as a part of the anniversary gift (though something without cotton next time around!). Definitely check out AR if you're looking for something a little different, but entirely enjoyable.

Then they said they would mail the projects never happened. Made arrangements a third time to pickup only to find the business closed. I hired Happy Little Brush Strokes as a painting activity for a bachelorette party, and the company was so easy to work with from start to finish. I reserved my date several months in advance because their calendar fills up quickly! You're able to choose one of the paintings from their website and adapt it to what you need. I chose to paint full-sized wine bottles (and place fairy lights inside of the bottle so it lights up!) since the bachelorette party was "wine themed." The price was $30 per person for the experience. I believe if you choose to paint a canvas, it's $25 per person. Happy Little Brush Strokes came all the way out to Greenport, Long Island to do this activity. The instructor, Bob, was an absolute delight, who was filled with so much positive energy! He provided everything we needed for the event (paint, brushes, water cups, the wine bottles, fairy lights). The only thing we needed to provide were tables, table cloths, and chairs for our group of 7. The experience took just over two hours, and everyone had an amazing time!

Krissi was so accommodating! She even waited a few minutes to start Bc we ran late in awful traffic, which I found so sweet and kind and RARE. The painting was a NYC skyline. It looked difficult, but Krissi was so patient and made it look so easy. She guided us every step of the way. By the time we were done, we had these beautiful paintings. We had a blast. It was a great way to end the week and total into our creativity. I have been to paint nights before, but the people I brought were first timers. They were apprehensive about their lack of artistic skills, but I reassured them that they would have a great time, and I told them how surprised they would be when their painting was done. Well, I wasn't lying. Our paintings came out awesome. Another thing I like is that this isn't just a studio, but it is also a gallery. There were paintings done by local people that were absolutely brilliant. One in particular, was a remembrance to 9/11 done by Michael Mastropolo that brought on such emotion and feeling that we are still talking about it today. We brought our own snacks and drinks, but Krissi provided snacks as well. Nice catchy tunes play in the background as you wind down from a long hard week and paint to your heart's desire. The studio offers classes, events and paint nights, so check them out!!! Thanks to Krissi for a great experience and for helping us make a fun memory that will last in time. Everytime we see our paintings, we will remember what a great time we had.

I went here this past Saturday for an event. It was anything short of a disaster. The owner,…read moreKrystal, was probably the most unprofessional business owner I've ever met. She had her baby on the hip the entire event, which was alarming for a workshop where you can literally get hurt anywhere you turn. At one point, she had the baby in a walker and he was just walking around hitting into things and I almost tripped over him... I couldn't believe it honestly. Something could've fallen on him and it wasn't like this was a last minute event. This was planned way ahead of time where she could've found child care coverage for the day, it was no excuse. She was extremely rude to the children and parents alike, I was really taken back. I signed up beforehand on the website and when it was time to make the craft, my daughters name wasn't on the list. She shoved the list in my face and said "you didn't sign up!" I said "I know for a fact I signed up because I sat down with my daughter and I let her pick out exactly what craft she wanted". She then shoved the list back in my face and said "no you didn't, she's not on the list!" My daughter is 5, you're a business owner, it's a simple fix, what's with the attitude? My husband and I were strongly thinking about doing an event together there to make something. We would never go now after this. The crafts are extremely expensive too, not worth it.

Looking over the website I was a bit hesitant as I saw the prices. I thought..."This seems a bit pricey...I'm not sure..." But I threw caution to the wind and decided, what the heck. You pick your date that you want to come to the workshop and you pick your project as well as the design. Upon arrival, your wood pieces are there for you as well as the stencils for your chosen design. You are provided a color sheet that has the paint colors, as well as the wood stain colors. There are a ton of examples on the walls too, as well as samples of different wood staining techniques. Ethan was helping out today and I have to say - I am not sure if our experience would have been as enjoyable if not for him. He was simply AMAZING. So kind, warm, engaging and helpful. He didn't mind when I picked out 5,3492 colors for my wood tray project. If I came back here, I'd want him to be working again. Anyways, I am not going to bore you with the step by step process but the three hours allotted kinda flew by. Depending on your project and the design/colors you pick, you will see why. In my tray with the art supplies, I wanted certain supplies to be "true" to real life and used multiple colors for a single item and this of course took time. The process is fun, easy and even for those who claim "they can't draw" or "they aren't creative" I call malarky - this is a place where you will absolutely have success and have a true one of a kind creation that you have made, and that you didn't purchase from Home Goods or something of the like. Head on down here for the afternoon with a friend or significant other and you are sure to have fun and get those creative juices flowing.
