History

Established in 1972.

In 1972, Leonard Kirtz, Sr. and concerned parents founded Gateways to Better Living, Inc. to offer an alternative to institutional care, prioritizing the wellbeing of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Starting with a single home in Youngstown, Gateways expanded rapidly, opening group homes by 1986. Over the years, Gateways evolved, breaking ground on new facilities in 1998 and downsizing to offer more personal care with four 8-bed homes in 2002. The organization also pioneered apartment-based supported living and introduced innovative day programming in 2006. For over four decades, Gateways has remained committed to providing exceptional care and continues to evolve to meet the needs of individuals in the 21st century.

Meet the Manager: Karl W.

Karl Ware joined Gateways in 2015. Karl earned a Bachelor of Arts in print journalism from Southern University and A & M College, and a Master of Education in rehabilitation counseling from Kent State University. Karl came to Gateways with a solid background of eighteen years in the field of developmental disabilities with the Trumbull County Board of Developmental Disabilities. After six years as Program Director, Karl assumed the helm of Gateways as Executive Director/Director of Operations on July 1, 2021.
