I bought a portioned pastry from the store -- in the section where ready-to-go coffee is sold. The pastry was displayed on the shelf, already cut into individual pieces. When I got home and started eating it, I immediately noticed a strange taste. I looked closer and saw a layer of live green mold inside. I'm currently in the early stages of pregnancy, so this really scared me. I went back to the store right away. I told the staff that the pastry had mold, and they responded, "That's not mold -- it's pistachios." They called a manager, who explained that the pastries come frozen, are defrosted, and then sold like that. But I'm absolutely sure it was mold -- I recognized the taste, and it's one I'll never forget. I've accidentally eaten mold before, but never in a dessert. This was disgusting. They gave me a refund, but when I asked about compensation for gas and wasted time, I was told they don't offer that. I didn't even receive an apology for what happened. This was a very unpleasant and stressful experience. I do not recommend this place. My wife left there in tears. We live quite close to this store and used to visit it often, but after this incident, we will never go back. My wife decided to go to the store to buy groceries for dinner, but a little later, she called me, very upset. When she was at the store and wanted to ask the difference between two types of fish (she asked because they looked the same, but the prices were very different), the salesperson was extremely rude to her, despite my wife always being friendly and polite. The salesperson's behavior upset my wife so much that it brought her to tears, and my wife didn't say a single rude word in response. I find this incident outrageous and strongly advise against visiting Gateway Produce. We will never shop there again. read more

Have been coming here for over 20 years (since they were in a tent in the Grocery Outlet parking lot). What used to be a simple produce stand is now a produce stand, a fresh deli, a hot deli, small milk and cheese selection, European candies and canned goods, drinks, and two bakeries. The European chocolate in this area seems to have worms? I've never experienced this, but I could see it with a lot of nut interiors and loose candies. Maybe don't eat the Candy? Anywho! The bakery was delicious. Fresh baked breads with fruit or cheese and sweet rolls. Also grabbed a jar of spicy ajvar (a dip of puréed roasted eggplant, bell pepper, and garlic) and was happy they had a selection of maybe 7 or so! I went there looking for produce, and was kind of disappointed. They had plenty of apples, but not much else. The green onions were wilted, the pears were bruised... Honestly not what I would expect. The stars get bumped up because of how much other fun stuff was in the store! Amazing pastries! Great selection of salami and sausages! Tremendous cakes! Beautiful Piroshki! Heck, all the fun stuff pushes it right up to five stars... the fact that not one single person there, staff or customers were wearing masks pushes it back down to four. read more

Their name has changed to European Delicatessen but the small sign on Andreson Road still says Gateway Produce. It's a big store and they fill it with a large variety of European canned & dry goods (You want some kind of vegetable pickled? They've got it!), a whole aisle of cookies, a hot food & cold food deli counter, some beautiful cakes, a bunch of candy, a fair amount of produce, some personal beauty/toiletries items and a housewares & books section. I think there is a coffee shop in there, too, but I'm not 100% on that....I may have misread a sign in one area I saw with some little tables & chairs. read more

Gateway Produce is now called European Delicatessen, and what a wonderful upgrade it is. While their produce selection has shrunk in size, they still have a wonderful variety to choose from. Yes, some produce is on its last leg, but do a little digging and you'll find there's more than plenty of good produce to go around. Plus, you won't find better prices anywhere else. The store itself seemed very clean and fresh, Well organized and easy to navigate. Everything in the deli section looked AMAZING and I can't wait to come back and try what they have to offer. I have stopped there a lot this time I was not pleased at all as there was an old woman and a young girl up at the register they look like they were whispering to each other when they were looking at me which was really rude. I purchased some candy for the kids and they handed the kids the candy which they shouldn't have done they should have asked me first the kids were holding the candy and I gave it back to them and ask them to put it in the bag at the register since it had already been paid for and they told me we can't take it back because it's melted. I literally before I went to the registered picked up two large pieces of candy nothing was melted. It's just the fact that they lied and said that this big large candy was melted when it never was and I felt that they were being extremely racist as they kept whispering to each other. If I could give this place three and a half stars, I would. Sometimes the European food you see on the shelves are overdue, and that kind of makes me weary of buying things other than fruit in fear that I might purchase past due food. First off - this isn't a product store. Their limited product selection was sketchy and the quality of their produce was terrible. They didn't have a selection of produce. I personally didn't feel comfortable in the store as it felt rather sleezy in there. I did make a small purchase but wasn't comfortable using my debit card there. This is a hidden gem in the 'Couve. Your best bet is to go here for seasonal fresh produce. Out of season items are likely not to be in stock. They get lots of local produce that may appear less than perfect, but fresher than fresh. This is a great place to grab fruit by the case if you enjoy canning or freezing, too! Now is also the best time to grab fresh pears and apples. We bought a case of both and made some pretty stellar pear sauce to freeze. (The house smelled so good!) The prices are hard to beat and the fruit is amazing! They also offer a variety of Eastern European goods and other odds and ends. If you haven't check this place out, Go! FYI - They prefer cash and there is a fee to use your credit card. read more

This place is easy to miss but has some great values. It loses a star for the fact that some of the produce isn't that great and the bins of non-perishables are kinda iffy. I have found some good things in them like drink mixes and easy mac cups... a cup of instant stuffing for a quarter? That's my style. I bought a bag of chocolates and half were ashy crumbles. At least it was cheap. They also have an interesting selection of eastern european foods. On a couple occasions I've bought things that weren't in English just as an adventure. Cans of rice stuffed eggplant are tasty, Imam Bayeldi is good... I got a big bottle of pretty good imported EVOO for like 7 bucks! They have european breads and cakes from Ararat bakery... there are Russian meats and cheeses too. I haven't brought myself to buy the bagged Pelmeni but I am tempted every time. Most of the produce is fine, but with bruisable fruits be careful. You have to pick through a bit but the prices are worth the work most of the time. All in all it's not bad to leave the store with 2 bags of veg for 5 bucks. read more
