I had heard many good things about this pub before finally walking through the door one Sunday…read moreevening for a pint. The first thing that struck me was the amazing range of beverages displayed on the board above the bar - how can one choose? The crowd this particular evening was about 60 strong, the atmosphere was jovial - unoccupied seats were nonexistent. I manoeuvred through the heaving mass and into the small gap between two punters to place my order at the bar - a gypsy-like barmaid appeared to take my order. Sullen faced and visibly disinterested she grunted in my direction, I took this as my cue to request my desired frothy. "A pint of La Chouffe please" I asked. The response I got back from her was drenched in a thick Norfolk accent, unintelligible to anyone other than her ilk. After twice excusing myself and asking her to repeat her response I gathered that she was telling me that the La Chouffe was off. I went for the Budvar instead, it was served in a straight non branded pint (as was every other drink being drank in the bar). The Budvar was refreshingly cold and tasted brewery fresh. I looked in vain for a free seat inside, but after getting a nostril full of the vomit-like smell at the back of the pub near the toilets I was happy to venture outside and perch at one of the tables. Due to living in close proximity I have been back a few more times sampling many of the stouts on gravity which seem to change quite frequently. The range of beers continue to impress, but the staff continue to disappoint. If they could put some focus on to improving their customer service for anyone who isn't a known customer and also liberally apply some Febreze to the floors this place could live up to its reputation. There is a sense that the owner/staff are resting on their laurels. Watch out, the competition is surely coming.

This is a generally a busy, noisy placein fact I want to break out the adjective raucous to describe this one. Yet at the same time we were able to find a seat in a quieter room over to the right. I had a couple of their quality beers, namely the Hell Cat and the Marmalade Cat. I was also very pleased to see them selling rolls on the bar. They were at such a reasonable price that we bought some to take with us for later in the day!

What we thought was going to be a pleasant meal ended up with 1 meal being sent back for 100% refund as it was oozing blood when it was requested to be well done. At the time of ordering the meal it started going wrong, we ordered 1 Carvery, 1 Castle Platter, 2 Mixed Grills, both well done with eggs flipped. Also ordered 1 Lager, I non Alcoholic beer and 1 pint of Lemonade and Lime. The meal was paid for and I asked how long it would take so that we could co-ordinate the carvery meal. The lady who took our order mentioned to me that there was no egg with the steak!!! She had got the order wrong, so had to dash to the kitchen to correct it, then charge me the £14 difference. At the same time I mentioned the drinks were wrong, that was another error and she poured the correct drink. On to the meal: The meals arrived, my wife collected her carvery. I started to eat the steak which, although undercooked was okay. They I tried the gammon, it was raw, I then tried the lamb chop, I placed the tip of the knife in the middle and it oozed blood. I went to the bar to complain and ask for a 100% refund. The woman at the bar was a little smug and asked how I knew it was bloody as she could not see I had cut it. I suggested she should not doubt my word, but she picked the chop up and squeezed it and asked if I would like it re-cooked. Under no circumstances would I have accepted that back, so refused to eat anything there and got my money refunded. The reason my Son-in-Law did not complain about his bloody steak is that he did not want to make a fuss. To make matters worse, the sausages were still flexible and grey, the peas were poor quality and bullet hard, the roast potatoes were deep fried and hard in the middle, the cauliflower cheese was hard and tasteless. Overall a dreadful meal and at £85 was a waste of money. Now this may have nothing to do with the dreadful meal, but later that day my wife threw her heart up and was violently sick! I have had cause to complain about the carvery vegetables being cold before, it was pretty much the same this time. So, its a big no no and never again from our family - Dreadful in every way, eat at your own risk, but never be afraid to complain and ask for a refund. I always thought that when you go out for a meal it should be enjoyable, even better than what you could cook yourself, but this place really make a bad job all round.

I decided to get a pint of beer which was good as I expected and my boyfriend got the strawberry milkshake, which he really enjoyed but ended up drinking way too quickly. I think a bigger portion of that might be better. I think this is a great place to stop when out drinking or to have your last pint before going home if you've been out all day and it's getting late. Definitely a must go.

If you are a fan of tweeness then you deserve to make a pilgrimage to this bar where the clientèle is Norwich's hipster population, infact it would be a safe bet to say that between this bar and the Norwich Arts Centre is the epicenter of hipsterville in Norwich. Saying that it is super-friendly and quirky. The staff are very nice and the selection of live music and cabaret is very typical of Norwich's music scene (mostly acoustic guitar sets). There are stacks of Vice and various other fashion magazines hanging around as well as a pile of boardgames in the corner (Ive played many an intense game of Scrabble here). The drinks are a little expensive but this is balanced out by the fact it's genuinely a nice place to drink and some nights there is a cover to see bands but this is usually "optional". Conclusion; hipstertastic but ultimately nice.

It's actually a b&b but this review will only be for the bar. The place is steeped in history, the building was originally home to the diarist Parson Woodforde, the early food blogger! Check him out it's an interesting read for all you fellow foodie/history lovers. It has been refurbished quite a bit though so I'm not sure how many original features they've actually kept... There's some sofas if you fancy a comfy drink but I think it could do with a bit more cushy seating as I believe that's the ambience they're trying to create, but I also think they're focusing in on the food. Now, the food! I was extremely disappointed with my Cajun chicken and bacon burger, they'd added a mango mayonnaise which is what initially sucked me in but it didn't suffice and live up to my excitement. It was Luke warm to cool and the chips were homemade and chunky but had an odd taste to them. I don't want to be harsh but it was slightly 'glorified Weatherspoons' type food. The kids menu is Good value for money because when Charlie-beau's burger came out it was EXACTLY the same size as mine! They also get a drink and ice-cream (posh ice-cream too - think pistachio, ginger...) for about £7. They have a pubby menu on a chalkboard which is what i chose off but they also cater for more of a formal dining experience and offer an a la carte menu (nothing took my fancy for the pricing though). One of the new members of staff is delightful - can't do enough for you, we mentioned that our food was tepid when asked how it was (usually I complain but I didn't bother) he gave us complementary drinks and was very apologetic so that was nice. There is a huge car park all around it - not the tarmac'd sort - tasteful. Seeing as there isn't much else around I should think you would have to drive here unless you were a very keen walker so I can imagine there is a bit of drink driving going on round here on the odd occasion! Overall, I wouldn't rave about the food but it's a lovely place for a cosy drink and it's extremely child friendly :) I like a cheeky tipple in here when I'm in the area.

Early reviews suggest it was once a B&B, something I haven't noticed in my few visits there as I've only come to have a bite or drink. The interior is thoughtfully decorated with bookshelves and atmosphere is welcoming enough to sit solo or bring friends, but spacious enough to hear your own conversations and flag down a server. The seating is spacious and numerous both inside and out: barstools, tables, booths, and a considerably sized beer garden out back. The bar offers your standard ales (£3 on Tuesdays), ciders, and cocktails. Upon first glance the dining menu looks limited, but there are a couple good selections. I've tried the Parmesan Chips and dips, desserts, and their burger with cheese, slaw and British bacon. The burger was surprisingly good--though most places offer some form or another, to be quite frank I've found a decent burger hard to come by in this area. Not your quintessential pub (I'd say some menu items fall on the gastropub side of the spectrum), but a good starting point for food and drinks if you're in the Golden Triangle.
