With only 24 hours in Strasbourg, I was forced to make carefully researched decisions about where…read moreto eat (because I have food priorities when I travel). I am so glad we ended up in this tiny restaurant in Le Petit France for lunch! Since we didn't have breakfast, we opted to go big on lunch and this place fit that bill. The place is quaint and the proprietor was gracious and helpful with us Americans. The portions were generous and decadent. Don't come here looking for health food. Come here looking for hearty, authentic Alsatian dishes. You won't regret it. Onion soup - France meets Germany in this bowl. The onions in the soup was so tender and rather than being topped with a crouton and cheese, it was served on the side and we dipped it in the broth. So good. Foie gras - If you have any qualms about this delicacy, now is the time to get over them because it was the best foie I've ever had. The area is known for it, so there was no way I wasn't going to have some. Just do it. Don't not do it. Ham hock - No knife required. I was given a nice steak knife for it, touched the thing, and it fell apart. I put the knife down and just had at it with my fork. It was so ridiculously tender and rich. Came with potatoes (take some of the skin/fat from that meat and combine it with the potatoes as you dredge up the wine reduction with them) and a side salad (health food!). Order this. Just don't tell your cardiologist. Spaetzle gratin - And finally a dish of fat and carbs to round out or light lunch. It's like if Germany wanted mac n cheese, except way better. Also came with that healthy side salad.

The wine list is legendary with pricing dictated from the fact they bought the '85 Bordeaux when it came out in the market! The chef and his staff visited the table regularly chatted asked questions and actually cared about his clientele. The didn't g experience was designed for, and by the old school restaurant goer! Plus the chef grows, makes and produces wine on sight designed around his cuisine. Which enhances the experience even more! 5 star experience from beginning to the end. Merci!!

...little gem that's in the shopping area not far from the train station…read more Anyways, I ended up here after a 10 minute ride on the TGV from Strasbourg. It was Sunday, and the sleepy town was pretty much shut down. There were a few restaurants open, but mostly Pizza, Kebab, and other fast foods. The downtown, open air shopping center is a few square city blocks, so I thought to just explore hoping to run into a German restaurant/ brasserie. I didn't want to Google anything. Luck was on my side, and I found this place open and with plenty of patrons sitting outside enjoying a midday meal. The menu has many choices even some non-meat selections. I ordered a Jagerschnitzel topped with a mushroom sauce. It took a while to arrive, but it arrived piping hot with an accompaniment of vegetables and side of fries. The menu is in German and French, though the staff attending me spoke German, French, & English. It's a relaxed place where apparently locals come to enjoy a late Sunday lunch. The schnitzel was perfectly fried and deliciously tender. Portions are huge, and definitely value for money for a real German treat. People here stay longer and socialize at an unhurried pace. There is nice indoor seating, but outside is the place to be when the weather is good.
