Looking for dinner one night we read the reviews for Alter Simpl. They wrote of a quiet bar with good food - they weren't lying!! I highly recommend you stopping by here for dinner and a drink!! It was so good we came back the next night for drinks. The staff were very kind and gracious. Rinkal is a knowledgeable and kind bartender who can make an EXCELLENT drink! She's the best bartender in Europe! She even gave me a shot of one of Germany's favorite liquors! Daniel, in the kitchen, makes some of the tastiest food you'll eat! I had the corn fed chicken with mashed potatoes - it was a special - and was so so so good! I could eat that every day for the rest of my life. One thing to keep in mind, they don't accept credit cards, it's Euros only. The good news is the prices are very modest and reasonable. So if you're in Staufen, stop by this awesome little place! You won't regret it!!

We ended up eating here twice - and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. By the way, they don't take credit cards. Do yourself a favor and learn a little German before visiting - don't expect everyone to speak English. My wife had a chicken dish that she really liked, and though I don't quite remember what I had either visit, the atmosphere was nice - outdoor tables on a small alleyway let us get a feeling for this small town. They serve Riegeler beer which is not everyone's favorite, but it's not a bad one. The prices are right, the service is friendly. Smoking is allowed so it can get smokey in here. But if that doesn't bother you, it's certainly worth a visit, especially if you have out-of-town guests who want to see a good German pub.

It's filled with goths/vamps/whatever they are, the whole place reeks of smoke (and so will you when you leave), the bathrooms are disgusting, and they play alt rock from the 90s. Huh? No, doesn't make sense to me either. But they're open really late, nobody cares who you are or what you look like, drinks are pretty cheap, and if you get drunk and let yourself go you can have a good time if it's your thing. I don't really find that it is, but if I really hated it, I wouldn't come back. But for some reason I do -- at least when that one friend gets me to.

They had wonderful offers every day of the week on food, drinks and cocktails and even better deals for students. Since its 'renovation' in Septmber 2009 I have been there twice. Well, for starters, the place still looks the same to me and the only renovation I can see is that the plates have been changed, more specifically, the size of the plates has been halved. The toilets are still very small and dingy but hey, that's no problem if the place still lives up to its previous name. Well sadly, I can say that my 'lieblingsort' in Freiburg, is my 'lieblingsort', no longer! I always order the same thing every time I go there; the schweinesteak with kräuterbutter, pommes und beilagensalat - pork steak with an in -house made herb butter with a tonne of fries and a separate side salad with an in-house made special dressing. This dish used to contain just one steak but they have now made it two...possibly to make it appear more appealing to the buyer. Well I can tell you that the two steaks put together still don't make up the size of the one steak one had previously got. The kräuterbutter and salad dressing are not as tasty as they were before. The side salad is a 3rd of the size it used to be with many of the older ingredients missing. The portion of fries has also been drastically reduced. Normally my husband and I have to share one meal. When we were there yesterday we had to order extras on top to compensate our hunger due to the unexpected and very much unappreciated portion curtailment. Please bear in mind that the price was still the same although the plate and portion sizes had at least been halved. Service was ok. Waitress was friendly enough but the feel was not the same 'welcome home' feeling that one used to get greeted with when frequenting the place. Sad to say it was quite a disappointment and it looks like we will need to find a new 'fave' in Freiburg! However, if you want to go somewhere and pay the same price for the half the portion, Cheers is the place to go.
