Sitting on the balcony, right on the lake, with a glass of wine. I told my husband that I never wanted to leave! We also had dinner at their lakefront outdoor dining area and it was fantastic! I had the trout fillet with a lemon sauce that was out of this world. It was probably swimming in the lake one hour before I ordered it. Seriously, one of the best pieces of fish I ever had. It came with baby potatoes that were cooked with butter and parsley. The people there are wonderful and very helpful, they don't provide refrigerators in the rooms, but when I brought a bottle of wine from the supermarket back to the kitchen, they were happy to chill it for us in the refrigerator downstairs. If you ever get to visit this wonderful place, do stay or have a meal there, it is really special.

The cosy farmer's cottage built right into the lobby gives a special atmosphere. The rooms we got are really small but - again - nicely furnished (old wood used as decoration) and well maintained. But too small for 5*. Basic WLAN is free - more speed is costly. I cannot comment on the restaurant's quality yet - dinner will be served later. One thing is really unacceptable: no ventilation on the toilet. €240 per room incl. breakfast and dinner is "steep" ... I will comment on the restaurant separately.

The restaurant downstairs is delicious. The cheese dumpling soup is so good, and the whole fish is great too. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't good enough for us to sit on the patio. Great hotel and restaurant right on the Lake with the best location in Hallstatt…read more While our room didn't face the lake, it was large, had all the amenities that you would want like large towels and toiletries, and a super comfortable bed that had me wishing for a nap the second we walked in. Several others in our group got rooms facing the lake and some had balconies! We had lunch out on the dock in the back with was a great place to enjoy a glass of wine, a salad and to just wile away the afternoon. Make a reservation or you will be disappointed, although they do give preference to people that are staying in the hotel which is how we got to have lunch out there. There are umbrellas that they will adjust for you if the sun is too intense. I also ate at their indoor restaurant and had fresh trout that was just delicious! We also had a local dessert which was like pieces of dough and applesauce, but whatever they call it- I hope you aren't cutting back on carbs cuz it was delicious! Seehotel Gruner Baum definitely has the best location and views in this little town!
