I originally found Gary by calling the EMDR Institute and asking for a therapist in Austin that was both an expert in EMDR and also had a wisdom of their own. I wanted someone that had more to offer than just book smarts and scripted training. I really wanted to find my own personal Master Yoda!
Gary Gould was who they recommended. They also mentioned that he used to train new therapists in EMDR in Austin. So, I gave him a shot.
Fast forward 5 years. Gary has been an amazing mentor and therapist. He's often soft spoken, but knows just what questions to ask to coax a deeper truth out of me. He's helped me process all my old hateful feelings towards my ex-wife. Now, she and I have a profound ability to co-parent together and our son is the lucky beneficiary of Gary's work. He has been able to grow up from the age 6 to 12 with two loving parents that have compassion for each other, rather than feeling the typical animosity that most divorcees have for each other.
Gary has also helped me process some dark baggage from my adolescent years. Nothing I want to share publicly, but it's as dark as they come. Now, I genuinely feel free of those past traumas. I'm no longer triggered by them or have any real residual hatefulness. It's allowed me to become much more whole and centered in my daily life. And as a perk, I've found an amazing partner. She is kind and loving and a beautiful soul. And now she gets the benefit of all of my deep work with Gary.
I know for a fact that she and I wouldn't have clicked if it wasn't for all the work I've done with Gary. We've probably processed 50+ different past events (mostly traumas of some sort), but also recurring nightmares. I am a former U.S. Marine and served overseas for awhile. So there was plenty to work through. You name it, we've been able to move through it, using EMDR, brain spotting, as well as the wisdom of someone that's already been through it.
Also, Gary is genuinely kind and patient AND he will call you on your B.S. So don't mistake him for a pushover. He has massively helped me to curb my drinking alcohol (down by 80%) and was willing to call me on it, when it was getting out of control. Sometimes in the midst of therapy, especially when you're being courageous and facing shit you'd really rather never think about, there can be some backsliding (which I did). Gary was there to put that mirror in front of my face and show me the truth. I am eternally grateful for that. Most people (even psychologists) don't have that much courage.
Finally, after I was divorced, like a lot of newly divorced men, I was dating a lot. Gary also made sure I understood just how prolific STD's were in Austin. I'm sure he helped me avoid some bad stuff. He's the kind of mentor that will not let you stay in your naivety, even if it causes a little conflict in the therapeutic relationship.
Honestly, I couldn't have found a better mentor, therapist, and all-around great guy. My heart if full when I think about all he has given me and freed up in my life... read more
