My only complaint was the cavalcade of fire trucks and ambulances at the parade end. Check 200+ elderly men in red fezzes driving tiny cars? OH YES! The Sunday of the Memorial Day weekend. Kicks off at Somerville High at 1, wending its way down through Davis and up to Teele Square. YAY! _______________________ Postparade update: A little disappointing and underwhelming this year, but still the best Memorial Day parade in Somerville. The Broadway parade has nothing on this, and the Somerville Ave parade isn't worthy to even be mentioned in the same sentence. ________________________ Postparade update update: Screw it - 5 STARS!!!!

This square has a bunch of random bits of art strewn about, including the notorious giant pear. It's kind of upsetting with this pock-marked wrinkly skin and weirdly long stem. I wouldn't say come here for the pear, but in the middle of eating at all the awesome little places around here, wouldn't stop to admire this, well, whatever it is.

The Francis Parkman Memorial is hidden in plain sight, opposite the Brookline side of Jamaica Pond…read morenear the intersection of Francis Parkman Drive and Perkins street. Parkman was one of the first great historians of the United States, best known for The Oregon Trail and France and England in North America. He was born in Boston in 1823, and during the 1850s purchased land bordering Jamaica Pond for a summer home. The current memorial sits near the former site of his house. Parkman suffered from poor health, but was remarkably active. He rowed a boat on the pond regularly, and visited the general store on Centre st. to talk with the locals about the issues of the day. In his later years, he raised and hybridized flowers, becoming a professor of horticulture at Harvard's Bussey Institute at the Arnold Arboretum. When he died in 1893, Parkman was one of America's great men of letters. The Francis Parkman grammar school on Walk Hill street, near Forest Hills, was named in his honor. His house - Sunnyside - was removed when Jamaica Plain Park was created by Frederick Law Olmsted. Visiting the memorial requires a cautious crossing of Parkman Drive from the pond.

Nabil was incredibly accommodating, friendly, and very knowledgeable about Boston's history and food culture. We had a little trouble locating the starting point because the street sign had a different name than what appeared on my map. However, if you find the Registry of Motor Vehicles, you're in the right place! We started at a very interesting bread company, where we got to try some delicious breads and learn about the history of this unique bakery and its bread-making traditions. From there, we stopped at a local deli for a sandwich and then made our way to a pizza shop for a slice of cheese pizza. The pizza was delicious and had such a nostalgic, old-fashioned feel to it. The day we went was extremely hot, but Nabil was very thoughtful and made sure to bring us to shaded areas whenever possible, which we really appreciated. Our last stop was at a wonderful coffee house and pastry shop, where we enjoyed a cappuccino and a cannoli. Both were very good and were the perfect way to finish the tour. Along the way, we visited many historical sites and learned so much about Boston's history. Nabil did a great job bringing everything to life while making the tour fun and enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone looking for a great combination of delicious food, fascinating history, and a knowledgeable guide.
