Tried this place as a snack. Got the Hong Kong dumplings to see if they were legit. The dumplings were mediocre, but from Denmark I don't really have a comparison with other Asian places since this was the only one close to us. I think the stuffing could have been better, but the wrapper had good texture. I would give it a 6/10. Little seating, dark ambiance, but it feels fine tbh. read more

I was craving Chinese food and stopped by Gao for my dumpling cravings. There's nothing fancy here, a few chairs and outdoor tables. You order by filling out the menu yourself and handing it in at the counter. I came by and there was no other customers in the restaurant. I waited at the counter for 10 minutes and no one bothered to come from the kitchen to take my order. Finally I said excuse me and someone came over. The part about this that's annoying is that one of the books in the back saw me and didn't say anything. I got my order of spicy pork dumplings which were definitely homemade. They were good but nothing amazing. It ran around $10 for 6 dumplings so that's definitely a premium since they go for about $2 back in New York. It was a decent snack but paying this much to get full of dumplings is outrageous to me. Welcome to Copenhagen. read more

VEGETARIANS!! The vegetarian/vegan dumplings here are so freaking delicious. The vegetarian soup was also just as good and I definitely can't leave out the crispy tofu! Mushroom Dumplings for the win with a side of their chili sauce. You cannot try this place without asking for the side of chili sauce. It's amazing. What if I told you that you can get freshly steamed, fried, or grilled handmade dumplings on Blågårdsgade right between a taqueria and all the bars? When I moved here nearly 8 years ago, I would have called you crazy and probably also would have chewed you out for getting my hopes up. I tried the Hong Kong (55 dkk) option, which consists of 6 steamed pork and cabbage dumplings. The wrappers had a few small holes, which is a shame since the lovely soup drained out into the paper container they were served in. Hopefully this is just due to their recent opening, and will be fixed soon. They tasted very good but if you want more salt or spice, there is Sriracha and soy sauce on the table. I also got the cold noodles (30 dkk), which were equally delicious in a tangy nut (I'm guessing peanut?) sauce and brightened with a good punch of cilantro. It's great for a warm day and is bulked up with julienned carrots and cucumber. The noodles were just a little al dente. When you get an order of dumplings with a side, it costs 75 dkk so you save 10 dkk. Do I feel like I am back in Hong Kong when eating here? I wish I would be more impressed, but I wasn't. Dumplings, what's not to like? However, you couldn't exactly compare these dumplings those made in dimsum restaurants. Far from it. The dumplings were carelessly made, sticking to the paper tray making them difficult to pick up, not to mention they broke every time you tried to pick them up, making it double the challenge for people who does not have chopstick skill worthy of showing off. First of all, the choices are not many - Hong Kong, Spicy (vege) and Vegetarian . Since we wanted meat, we got the Hong Kong one. I got grilled bokchoy with garlic (seriously, why all the side dish are cold and how difficult it is to make grilled bok choy with garlic as warm dish? It would've been amazing instead). Bri R who was a vegetarian and allergic to peanut dined with us and although she stressed that she didn't want any peanuts in her dumplings, she found one which the girl behind the counter said that it must have been sesame seeds. Girl, I know the difference between sesame seeds and peanuts.... All in all, I'm happy that there's a dumpling bar in town. Seriously, what's better than getting dumpling and cold noodle / grilled bok choy snack in some afternoon with friends and wash it with some obscure pilsner? That beats getting a røde pølser at anytime, but for actual dumpling eating, I'd rather go to Royal Garden, Fu Hao or the likes where dumplings-making is more professional. ....and please be aware if you're allergic, they apparently don't take it seriously. read more

My friend scouted out this cute dumpling spot in Nørrebro. Casual and inexpensive. We tried the chicken dumplings, mushroom dumplings, fried tofu with spicy mayo and bok choy. Everything was super tasty! The dumplings seem to be first boiled, then browned on one side on a skillet so they were nice and browned. The fried tofu was amazing! The exterior of each nugget was crunchy and golden while the interior was fluffy like a soufflé. We could've skipped the bok choy but wanted to round out the meal with a veggie. read more

Dumplings are among my favorite food, so a local dumpling place sounds like heaven - even at Copenhagen prices. Completely missing their offer for two orders of dumplings and three sides for 180 or so kroner, we ordered the mushroom dumplings and the new spicy pork along with a side of bok choy and a small coke for 185 kr. - why on earth didn't they tell us of their special deal? Moving on, the dumplings (6 pcs for 55 kr.) come in a plastic bowl drenched in Gao's own soy sauce mix. Yeah uhm I like to dip my dumplings myself and actually be able to taste the content, and not just the soy sauce. The mushroom dumplings came first, and I was so sad that they were marinated in soy sauce like that because the filling was quite flavorful on its own. However, the skin had soaked up the soy sauce and made it entirely too salty to enjoy. The spicy pork came 10-15 mins later (??) and with a new mix of sauce, now with cilantro, which you will never hear me complain about. They weren't really spicy, and had the same problem as the previous dish, they were too salty. If you need to drown your dumplings in sauce to give them taste, you're doing it wrong! Regarding the side of bok choy, well, look at the photos on this page and you'll understand my disappointment; a tiny little plastic saucer of cold bok choy. Sigh. All in all, I probably wouldn't come back or recommend it. We were still hungry when we left and felt cheated by the serving sizes and the presentation - the filling you make is good, so let us pour our own sauce, Gao! read more

My first bad review. I had never tried dumplings before, so I got really excited when we wondered across this small take-away place. Had to try it!!! But gosh.... As we walked inside, we were completely ignored by 3 staff members even though we were the only people waiting to order inside. There might have been another 2 or 3 customers sitting and eating/waiting for food outside. The person in charge of taking the order passed us by 3 times without saying hi or at least "sorry, I'll be with you in few minutes or smth". When we were about to leave due to the long waiting time, he finally showed up and took our order. There was an interesting offer: 2 trays of dumplings + 3 cold side orders and I think the price was approximately 180 DKK which is an allright deal for Copenhagen. I don't know if they went to hunt the chicken first for out chicken dumplings, but it took more than 30 min for the food to arrive and the saddest part of the story - it totally wasn't worth the wait :( Dumplings were quite tasteless and the bit of flavour they had wasn't very good. Side orders were even worst. Cold rice noodles with a dash of peanut souce and some green sloppy vegetable with no sauce or tasteless souce or whatever was it served in plastic bowls like those you'd use to feed your pets... Not cuttlery or chopsticks given with the food. When we asked for it, the waiter brought cutlery from another table and later on a another customer took the glass of cutlery back and customers sitting at three different tables had to share one bottle of salsa :D A bit akward all together... + Few hours later my stomach was very unhappy trying to digest that strange food combo. We ordered the 2 dumpling dishes + 3 cold sides for 185DKK. We thought that was a decent deal so my girlfriend and I could each get a plate of dumplings and try all the sides. The first problem is that they only have 1 vegetarian option when on their website they show 2. The person at the counter kept messing up our order. We had to explain to him twice, that yes, we did only want 1 coke, and no, we did not order 3 dumpling plates and 2 side dishes. The food arrived in a normal amount of time. The dumplings were cold and relatively tasteless. We also did not get our order of garlic sauteed bok choy until we asked for it. He then found it at another table, the server told them they got it by mistake and asked them if they touched it (seemingly to bring it back to our table?). Luckily they had started in on it, and within 30 seconds we had a fresh one out on our table...why this wasn't done the first time is beyond me. The side dishes were nothing to write home about, they all tasted of salt. I thought the noodles were okay, but nothing else from here was anything special or even average. We went home and ate because we were still a bit hungry. Probably not worth it to try unless you really have to knock this place off your bucket list. read more

Service in this place was probably the worst I have seen in Denmark. We came in on a Saturday night. Got in line and there was one person ahead of us. The guy taking the orders spent the next almost 10 minutes clearing the foam from their draft beer keg and just ignored us. When you go in line you actually come with a form completed so it takes two seconds to register the order. Finally he stopped what he was doing and took our order. One of our dishes - the pork dumplings - was out. This was at 6:30 on a Saturday nigh in Denmark where everyone eats pork. They said the dumplings would take 20 min. They took more than 30 and only one dish came out. We had to wait another ten for the other two. Others were waiting also more than 30 min for takeaway. Chicken dumplings were pretty good. Veggie dumplings pretty gross. Great idea for a place in a cool area in Copenhagen but absolutely horrible service and dumplings not good enough to bother. read more
