Quite sadly, now closed, as is the East Grinstead branch. A shame, I have many happy memories of this from my childhood, along with Whites Bazaar. read more

There were many photo opportunities and lots of demonstrations as well. The sales people worked for the store and there was no pressure at all. There is also a cotton candy machine where you can watch it being made through the glass, all automated. We somehow left without purchasing anything due to our inability to take it back home.

The shop is always well stocked with a variety of childrens toys, including some you are unlikely to find in many supermarkets. Reasonably priced, this would be the ideal place to purchase a child's Christmas present. It's not worth heading in to town for a visit alone, but be sure to bear it in mind.

Flogging Molly may have sung "the sun never shines on closed doors" but conversely the sun seems to look most kindly upon George Street. Maybe it's the philanthropic work of the nine, yes that's right nine, charity shops to be found on this one little street that causes this place to have something of a cheery air. Or perhaps it's all the outdoor seating laid on by the wide selection of restaurants and cafés that await your hungry stomach and weary legs after having wandered from charity shop to charity shop enjoying the seemingly never ending jumble sale vibe of them all. It's odd though because George Street isn't a pretty street by any means. It has the same soulless council architecture as so many other small British towns have, but unlike nearly all the others it wears it well rather than suffering it. It also has a couple of sketchy transient street stalls at the north end opposite what was once a Woolworths and apparently a hate campaign in the window above an English café berating the Turkish run café down the road. Yet somehow aside from all this George Street retains its' lively cosmopolitan vibe and remains a lovely place to spend a couple of hours on your day off picking up second hand CDs you missed the first time round, for two pounds and getting kitted out with a few shirts for knocking about in.
