    St Andrew's Episcopal School

I'm a parent of a Pre-K kiddo…read more We moved from NYC to Jackson, via Denver, just before my son started at St Andrew's Lower School. For our family, having the best educational opportunities is the number one priority. As much as we wanted to support public schools (and would have moved anywhere to do so), it's just to iffy, considering government cuts, etc. So, our plan was to send our son to a very well known and highly ranked school in NYC. Yes, the pain of applying for a Pre-K child's is absurd, but you do what you've got to do. Throughout our journey of the application process, the idea of moving to Mississippi and sending our son to S.A.'s was presented to us. As someone who has hardly set foot in The South, this was a crazy idea. Well, after much research and consideration, it was absolutely the best option (and a risk because it might not have been all that). We are well into the school year and I cannot say enough good things about St. Andrew's. I'm pretty skeptical when something or someone is so highly regarded. But, St. Andrew's really is TOP NOTCH. My little guy has flourished every day since day one. He LOVES going to school every day. It is such a smart community, where experience with brilliance are bridged to create something truly magical. I love meeting students from the upper school. They gentlemen, they are ladies, they are mature, articulate and straight-up classy. I've talked to about 17 upper school students in various settings and each one lights up when they talk about S.A. Only one had a negative thing to say, which was, "you know, I'd rather be in college." And, I've met several alum who talk about S.A. with as much enthusiasm as a college senior who just returned from partying in Ibiza for Spring Break! There is something really special about St. Andrew's. The teachers are incredible, at least the ones I have encountered. They are so patient, are no-none sense, communicative, energetic...I could go on and on. I know no school is perfect, but St. Andrew's is perfect for us. I wish every school could be like this one.

I go to this school, so everything here is 100% true with a touch of my opinion…read more St. Andrew's is a Episcopal school (bet you all ready guessed that) meaning if you are not Christian you're going to listen to prayers that you really shouldn't care. There is absolutely no bullying here or else you are going to be suspended for like a long time. In the middle school, there is like Street Jam which is really fun. But I highly recommend to come to this school at the starting of the school year. Plus this school has like the best education in Mississippi even Jackson Prep and Jackson Academy can't beat it. Plus you are NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE PICTURES OF SCHOOL PROPERTY, so I don't think that picture is authorized and it's not very helpful what the school might look like. Just look it at Google Earth.

They provide healthy lunches and snacks, open age grouping, and an effective education method that works developed by Maria Montessori. We love it here! As the children are learning letters they learn through their senses and first learn the sounds then to draw on sandpaper cut out letters then in a small board of sand (think zen garden for an office desk). The environment is very home-like, comfortable, sensorial, global, human. When it is busy it has a beautiful humming sound as the kids grab their own work and begin their day under the observation and gentle guidance of the teacher, whose presence is hardly noticed by an outside observer. She floats and observes and facilitates. Snacks are healthy. Peaceful resolution of problems is a key focus. I volunteer for some Spanish education. Unstructured play is also key and very sandy. I shake and dust off the sand before helping my excited, engaged, and exhausted child into the car at the end of a day. They have a sand lion pet as well as a tadpole. My child is respected and loved here. The school has been open for 30 years under the guidance and direction of Erlene Weldon, who has given her life to this school in a town I was very surprised to house the Montessori method. They offer far more than any day care setting inspiring children to love to learn, think with all of their body, and become responsible little people very gracious and courteous.
