They have open times when non-members can come in, and the workshops are AMAZING! Where: Corner of 6th & Morton - Entrance is the purple door with their logo on it - located on the south side of the building next to the parking lot - this was the former home of Paper Crane Gallery. Workshops: I have taken the Introduction Screen Printing Workshop and it was great. For just $30 you get a 3 hour workshop where they take you through all parts of the process and you end up walking out of there with finished product. They are super helpful and really informative. I don't know if they have an age minimum but I think with a parent 12+ would be fine. I can't wait to take the image carving class. Free Print Times: They have available times where you can come in and utilize their equipment. The fee is super reasonable ($5/hr) and there are people there to help you. That being said, I recommend taking one of the intro classes first. Gallery/Work for Sale: They usually have some items for sale or on display but this really is more of a functioning studio than a traditional gallery space. That being said, if they do have an open house during a gallery walk I highly recommend you check them out! Odd/Ends: There is no air conditioning in the workshop so come prepared with some water, there are bathrooms on-site, and they can work from images both in-hand or those on a flash drive or emailed to them. They have a ramp into the building but I wouldn't put them in the super-accessible category just because so much of the work needs to be done while standing. Parking is on the street or in the lot located to the south side of the building.

There are several exhibitions during the year, some of which overlap. The emphasis is on contemporary art and also design, with metal-work, ceramics, photography, and videography pieces in addition to painting and sculpture. I am not sure which show the two-star reviewer attended but the range of work on display varies greatly between shows and even within a single show. I actually rate the Grunwald between 3 stars and 5 stars. You can sometimes get a preview by checking the Grunwald's FB page and/or their website. One thing I was disappointed in was a lack of Hoagy Carmichael representation, since their archive has a bunch of items in relation to him, including pieces of clothing. The only mention of Hoagy I found on exhibit was part of a little exhibit on famous musicians from the county. Hoagy was further down on the list and you had to listen to a bunch of other snippets before you could get to him. I expected him to be more prominent in this location. I really liked that they had reasonably priced gift shop and a really nice selection of used books/DVDs/sheet music, etc. While the exhibit wasn't doing much in the way of Hoagy, I picked up some really nice used items in relation to him.

They share the same building and although there is a separate entrance from the outside, we found it easiest to simply go through the doorway. Note that we didn't see anyone monitoring the museum during our visit, so we just browsed on our own. The museum is part of a larger area which includes a research library and even more exhibits in the central lobby area of the upstairs portion. (Note we did not explore the lower floor which looked off limits.) During our visit, we saw a lot of informational window booths with facts and artifacts that have been gathered from our state. There is a strong connection between this facility and the Angel Mounds in Evansville. There are several displays with information about the Angel Mounds and other mounds which were shaped like snakes, or marching bears. There are also windows with info on artwork inspired by animals, stands showing tribal shields with info, and science facts about animals that have lived in our state. The museum is unique in what it offers, but I understand that it won't appeal to everyone. But considering it is free and puts things into understandable relationships, it does offer value to those who may be interested in local history and/or nature. Review #2205
