Well, any place that remedies this preconception by installing a swing (no kidding - a real live swing) is alright in my book. Three walls is a non-profit visual arts program that has exhibitions on loan - according to their material. And while I was came by to check out the show "Turned Intos", I ended up grabbing a Grolsch and hanging out for one of their Salons. I will most certainly be coming back if and when they have one of these gatherings again. The organizers did an incredible job with the panel and the discussion that followed was hilarious! I do believe that this is the coolest place in the west loop - go take a look!

I attended the Van Gogh Immersive in February 2021, was expecting similar experience -- to be surrounded by murals, walls, floor, celling --- not that experience. Some pieces were interactive, which was unique and fun. Other were not particular impressive at there was too much daylight coming through the windows -- they would have benefit from having window coverings. Overall it was below average.

They respected COVID distancing / masking and it was not crowded in that they spaced out the people / scheduled times very well. I don't want to spoil it, so I will only put a few photos up. If you like art and want to support something safe and fun to do during these strange times, this is a great event. Yes, maybe a little "pricey" for some, given it's about an hour, but we are not going out / spending money during the pandemic so I figure people need to make a living. WOW. wow. wow. wow…read more Four hours today and it still wasn't enough. I plan on going back tomorrow or Monday. I loved everything about Art Chicago. The art (duh.), the people, the fashion. People from everywhere in the world speaking all different kinds of languages... all there to buy and look at art. The NEXT floor was like one giant fashion show. I had as much fun looking at the people as I did looking at the art. Most of the gallery staff were friendly and would engage in conversation with my friend and me... even though we obviously would not be buying anything. Spending the day here reminded me of being at the Tate Modern in London... which I visited three times in the month I was there. Such a great vibe. I can't wait to go back... and... I wish there was something permanent like this in Chicago.

Art Chicago offers curators, collectors, artists and art enthusiasts a comprehensive survey of current and historic work, from cutting edge to modern masters in a wide variety of media including: painting, photography, drawings, prints, sculpture, video and special installations. Now that I've got the official information over lets get down to brass tacks............. As a fine art photographer myself I was thrilled to be able to attend an Opening preview of this 4 day event last night. If you've never been on an upper floor of the Merchandise mart, you'll be shocked at the shear size of this building. It took me 2 hours to cover just one and a half floors on this building............and I was moving pretty quickly seeking primarily just photographic artist. Keep in mind these floors house not 1, not 2, but 3 cafes they are so big and over 18 elevators per floor. The 12th floor housed the primary galleries where collectors were looking at the hottest artist in the America and the world today. I was amazed at the artists I saw in this space and who were some of the best fine art photographers in the world. Artist like Michael Wolfe; Fred Korth; Wayne Miller who did some incredible imagery of the lives of average blacks living in the Southside of Chicago in the 40s; Luis Gonzalez Palma; Walker Evans; Alec Soth; and Achim Lippoth just to name a few. But there were painters that also inspired me.......Yigai Ozeri is a painter that does such a good job with oils that his paintings look like photographs!!! But I want to be clear about art in America......it is run, managed, directed, and facilitated by the very wealthy and very powerful and no where was that more evident than last night. There were many people there looking to buy or promote art and when pieces are going in 5 and 6 digit prices and they range in the thousands, this is the Super Bowl of art collecting at its best. Art, particularly in such economic times is a luxury and usually only a luxury the rich can afford. The crowd was no less than the most eclectic group of folks assembled in one place that I have ever seen and fashion statements abound. The event will cover the first 4 days in the month of May and involves just about every type of art venue in the city. If you get a chance you should definite check this out.

My friend and I traveled up to Chicago from Indianapolis for the sole purpose of seeing "Van Gogh's…read moreBedrooms", an exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago that explores a set of paintings with significance to the artist. The collection brings together all three versions of "The Bedroom" for the first time in North America. The first version was painted in 1888 just after moving into his "Yellow House" in Arles, France, but when its integrity was threatened due to water damage, he made a second version while at an asylum in Saint-Remy in 1889. He painted the third, a smaller version, just a couple weeks later for his mother and sister. Although the paintings appear at first glance to be identical, there are subtle differences in each, which the exhibit details at length with a video illustration, a video explaining the science behind figuring out the order the versions were painted, and a living model of the bedroom that inspired Van Gogh. Perhaps it's the fact I live in a small city that isn't able to bring exhibits of this quality, but I was blown away by the sheer volume of Van Gogh works on display - 36 total - and it presented much more than just the bedrooms. It includes earlier works of cottages, bird nests, books, boots, and items depicting the theme of a sense of home throughout the artist's life. It also includes his earliest surviving self-portrait and depictions of the asylum he was at. We paid $7 for the audio tour, which is a great supplement to the exhibit and good for works throughout the entire museum. You are allowed to take photographs, but no flash. Pro-tip: purchase admission tickets ($25 for out-of-towners) and tickets for the exhibit (an extra $5) online in advance. I'd estimate there were 400 people waiting in the cold just to buy tickets. We were high-fiving each other for our well-planned ways (my friends don't call me The Event Planner for nothing!) - dipping right around the line - then we got to the line for the exhibit. The posted signs based on our position indicated we started around a 75 minute wait, but it actually only took about 30 minutes to get in, which is still pretty packed so introverts, claustrophobes, and those who generally hate people should prepare for that. We went on a Saturday morning during peak time so you might consider going during the week if that's an option for you. We also took a bit of time afterward to explore the rest of the museum, which has a number of well-known works and artists on display - American Gothic, Nighthawks, several by Andy Warhol, several by Picasso, Dali, an entire room of Monet, Seurat's Sunday Afternoon on La Grande Jatte, several by Jackson Pollack, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's At the Moulin Rouge, which has particular significance for us. Three months earlier, we went to an exhibit at the Musee d'Orsay in Paris called the "Splendors and Misery of Prostitution", which had this painting on display and was also presented on all of the marketing materials for the exhibit. We weren't allowed at that exhibit to photograph any of the paintings so we felt like we had a small victory in being able to photograph it here.

Space itself is intimate, relaxed lighting, great music not too loud, and the owner who has been a high school art teacher for years, and creating art for longer, and her sons are kind and compassionate. I can see, how when the classes will offer children's coloring, woodcraft, and art therapy, that the owners will create a great experience for everyone. Can't wait to see what Artspace does next!

An amazing collection of work from a prolific photographer whose work spans not only cities, but…read morecontinents across the world. The initial feeling as you walk into the exhibition is one of excitement, as rows and rows of his work consume the walls of the gallery. Familiar, iconic images can be found scattered amidst many other equally defining works. The joy is just really going through them all to find the "decisive moment" in each of his works, but then relishing in the unexpected pieces that you discovered somewhere along the way. Coming back again for the free Thursday night admission? I'd skip all the other works and make a beeline for Henri's work and start right there. Because then you can be sure that you leave the AIC without any other regrets before the museum closes its doors for the evening. But I can't promise what you MAY regret after the doors have closed and you've been left to your own devices for the rest of the night that has yet to begun!
