We stayed in theater district for the weekend ... and walked couple blocks for brunch. As we walked i was drawn to the mosaic art in the doorway and someone said the shop opened soon . We stopped back on way to hotel. Great concept ... gives kids a place to be safe and creative.. learn to hone an art outlet. Then they sell some of the art that is created. read more

Gallery 37 is a feel-good shopping experience. They host free youth programs, in which students create art or learn skills such as packaging design. After leaving the Chicago Cultural Center across the street, I thought I would check the place out. There is a small shop adjoining the gallery and classroom. Most of the art (paintings and sculpture) and jewelry (beaded stuff) didn't pique my interest - not my style. There was a display in back of the store with several handmade soaps, lotions, and lip balms. I purchased an all-natural lip balm, cleverly named "Chappucino," for only $2. It smells wonderful and is very moisturizing - a purchase I don't regret with this early on-set of winter. And I love the adorable label - a cappucino mug with a smiling face and a mustache. While I was here, there was a class in session. At the back of the store there's a large window so you can look in and observe. I only spent $2 here, but the nice lady working here gave me a free tote bag with their logo on it. Gallery 37 is certainly worth a look if you're in the loop area or looking for a way to get your child involved in the arts without spending lots of money on expensive lessons. read more

I can honestly say that this is an awesome program! I was an apprentice back in high school for the park mural (summer), jazz painting program (afterschool), lamp design (afterschool), wood sculpture (afterschool), and sidewalk mural program (summer). So yeah, I was heavily involved in it throughout my HS years. The stipend was nice, but the friends and opportunity to learn about the different art forms was just priceless! The passion that the artists had in their work and how much they motivate the students was just insane. You will NOT get a chance to work so closely with real artists like this once you attend an art school, I kid you not. Like many here mentioned, if you have a kid in school, get them involve. You and them will not regret it. read more

Gallery is such a great place for young artists. The thing about it is, that the students actually go and interview for the job, or class position, so that means the students actually want to be there. I've been in both their ASM (afterschool matters) and AAEP (advanced apprentice education program)... programs and both are simply great, no matter what art you choose. Applications are kind of confusing for new members, but once you're in, the staff is very friendly and promoting, and for ASM programs, you actually get paid a stipend (which rocks for high school students who want to get paid for something they want to do later in life). read more

Gallery 37 is a good addition to the cultural scene of Chicago and should be praised for its goal of fostering the artistic abilities of Chicago's youth. The place has a theater, workshop and retail store, as well as a café. The retail store in its offerings is a hipsters wet dream. All the offerings, including paintings, small sculptures, T-shirts and other assorted items, are geared towards young teens. The work is loud, energetic, strange and sometimes beautiful. A lot of work has gone into the projects but the payoff is not always successful. I appreciate the effort. This store would be at home in Wicker Park. read more

Spent the afternoon watching a superior group of Chicago teens perform Ragtime. It was educational, entertaining and so professional. I was in awe. Hats off to the directors and leaders that put the time an effort into Chicago youth. Well done, well done! read more

LOVE. Nothin' but love here. Gallery 37 is part of the After School Matters organization which provides an incredible array of extracurricular activities to teens and young adults in the Chicago area. There is such a need for places like this that give young people an outlet for developing healthy creativity and the support and structure to make it all possible. But hey, customers, you win too! You can purchase original art (ranges from paintings, screen prints, drawings, sculpture, and more), jewelry, clothing, and lots of other items that you just have to pop in to browse through. I ended up taking home an awesome, color filled screen print of the Calder sculpture called The Flamingo that's in downtown Chicago. It was made by a high school student named Felicia and it's just ILL ( in a good way :D ). They actually had a sale going on and I received a discount off the original price, which was already quite reasonable. Bonus! The gallery is located literally right by Millennium Park and would make a quick detour if you're in the area. Very nice and cool staff to boot. I'll go out of my way to come back the next time I'm in town. read more

My mom and I just happened to pass by Gallery 37 after a day of shopping at Marshall Field's. I was very impressed with the art the local kids created. I bought a beautiful clay vase painted in a rustic orangish-pinkish color with hints of black. It was the first piece of "real" art that I ever bought. Although I no longer live in Chicago, when I return for a visit, I'll definitely pop by the gallery to see if I can find some other pieces to decorate my home in L.A. with. read more

I love the idea of this place. The program offers a variety of afterschool workshops to kids in chicago. This shop sells their products. It was fun to see what variety of programs they must offer based on the variety of products. Thr prices weren't bad and there were some really cool art pieces there. I saw products ranging from graphic design cups, tumblers, phone cases, to terrariums, to wood work, to jewelry and much much more. I only had a minute to browse but was instantly determined to find something to buy to support this program. I ended up with a fused glass necklace that was a great Christmas gift! I would definitely check this place out next time in town ans need to find something like it in Houston! read more

Everyone has a coming-of-age-story. The where's, what's, who's and how's of when you realized what you wanted or who you were and what it meant. These places, things, and people forever to be associated with the time you first realized something profound. In my story, Gallery 37 is the box in which I pack those people, places, and profundities. Without Gallery, it all would have been so different. For three summers in the 90s, Gallery was the light at the end of school-year tunnel. (That tunnel being a Catholic school in the northern burbs with an Abercrombie and Fitch mold that didn't fit properly on me.) In Gallery programs, for the first time in my life, I was surrounded by people who loved to do what I loved to do. And, we wanted to help each other be successful and create excellent art. Gallery was a community where it was safe to be creative and to take risks without the fear of failure or humiliation. It nurtured me as an artist, a person, and demonstrated how rich and wonderful life could be outside the frenemies, mean girls, and hyper competitive atmosphere of high school. Sometimes, I wish I could go back to those summers and live them all again. read more

Gallery 37 is cool. We went to see a musical there and it was fun. The theater is small, but cozy. The actors were good. It was different from what I'm used to, but I really enjoyed it. I'll definitely be going back. read more

Great gallery, going to a good cause. I'm impressed by the work at Gallery 37 b/c its made by budding artist and artisans and it is conscious and thought-provoking work. I bought a photo that illustrated the death of Jim Crow. I also purchased a collection of poetry that reminded me work by students at Poetry for the People (which use to be taught by the late June Jordan at UC Berkeley). They also have a theater, which we were lucky enough to catch an awesome play. read more

There's not enough I can say about Gallery 37. If you have a teen/young adult interested in the arts. This is the place to be. You get paid to do what you love. There is a variety of programs and its a chance to try other art forms you are interested in. If you don't know too much about it, they will teach you. Work here most of my young adult life. Hands down the BEST....JOB....EVAH! read more

I have worked here over the years and couldn't come to love a place more. Gallery 37 has some of the greatest performers in Chicago perform in it's Storefront Theater (i, myself, have had the liberty to perform here as well). It's a bit snug but that will not distract you from the great shows. I luv it. read more

This place will make you weep with joy and give you a very affordable art collection at the same time. Go. Spend. Rejoice. Repeat.

I was visiting the Loop with my 13 yr old granddaughter, who happens to love art. Searching the Internet for a nearby gallery to browse, I stumbled upon Gallery 37, an 8 minute walk from our hotel. All I can say is WOW. What a fabulous organization for teens!! We dropped in, unannounced, and after browsing the retail store, got more info on the program, run by Afterschoolmatters.org (check it out!). Erin, in the communications department and front desk, offerred to take us on a tour of the entire building, and ALL of the various programs going on. Painting, drawing, clay, sculpting, dance, culinary, etc -- we were blown away by the talent of these students, and the friendliness of staff and instructors! If you have a teen 14 or older who is interested in the arts, and live in Chicago, you have to visit this place and give your teen the opportunity to get involved...This place is simply awesome!! read more
